Moon River
By Janice Eidus
In the moonlight, moonshine, moondog, mooning light... Actually, it's daytime, sun round and hot, but the air feels moony. Like wax, hot, moon all around me. A hot moon might scald me; a hot moon might melt me. I'm on my back, on a park bench. I remember a moon song: Audrey Hepburn singing "Moon River... Wider Than A Mile..." I wish I were Audrey: gaunt, huge-eyed, strumming gently on an incongruous guitar, demanding my bacon and eggs among diamonds. I do hear her singing. No, not her, but there is someone. Across the park, even with my eyes fully closed and my ears semi-closed, a guitar and a lone woman's voice come drifting. Vaguely, if I strain, I can make out the words. Is it worth it? Yes, it must be; I'm looking for clues. In the sixties, a male voice would have been raucous, loud, bemoaning the Bomb and segregation, and I'd have taken my clues from there... But it's not the sixties; nor is it the seventies, when punks ruled and violence was cool and he would have wailed,
Baby I will smash you
In the face!

BLACK ICE
Health
by Janice Eidus You're obsessed with it, so you go for a check up. Your doctor says that basically you're in excellent health. Before you can breathe a sigh of relief, she adds, "However, your irregular Pap Smear may indicate a pre-cancerous condition, your shortness of breath may indicate asthma, and your severe reaction to Prozac may indicate manic-depression." She sends you to three more doctors one for cancer, one for asthma, one for manic-depression who give you tests and then send you home to await results. While you wait, you try to figure out how in the world, on a freelancer's salary, with paltry health insurance, you're going to be able to pay all these doctors. You begin to experience stabbing pains where you're sure your cervix is. You have palpitations and can't breathe. You go on a manic shopping spree, from TriBeca through SoHo through both the East and West Villages, maxing out your credit cards in the process. Afterward, you go home and drink a Scotch, feeling morbidly depressed because you have no money left. The results of the tests come back a week later. The three doctors tell you that basically you're in excellent health. You call your first doctor to tell her the good news. She gently suggests that perhaps you have some stress in your life. "Why don't you see a psychotherapist?" she asks, rhetorically.

Home Janice Eidus Class Barbie Submissions Subscriptions Prizes Workshops ... Links I never had a “Real” Barbie. I had a less expensive, rip-off version. It wasn’t that Barbie Dolls cost a fortune, or that my parents were too poor to afford one; it was just that my mother, a benign but resolute Socialist, saved money every way she could, and my toys were always cheaper versions of my friends’ toys. In the 1950s, when I was seven years old, we lived in a housing project in the northeast Bronx called The Gun Hill Projects. My best friend, Marla, who lived a few flights down in the same building and was in my second grade class at P.S. 41, didn’t have the same standards of political awareness to live up to, and therefore owned a Real Barbie, a Ken, and many changes of clothes for both of them. My socialist parents had taught me—rather simplistically, they acknowledged years later—to believe that poor people were unquestionably “better” (more ethical, more humane) than rich people, which I interpreted also to mean that my Fake Barbie was better than Marla’s Real Barbie. So when she and I played a series of wild games with our dolls, I always reassured myself that my Fake Barbie was prettier, kinder, and smarter than her Real Barbie. Fake Barbie’s features were, in fact, softer and kinder than Real Barbie’s. Real Barbie was too angular for my taste, hard and cold-looking: definitely a “rich bitch,” as my tough-acting, older brother said about the snooty girls he sometimes met at parties, girls from wealthy

One afternoon a few years ago, I sat at my makeshift wooden desk,
typing away on my laptop computer as the sun streamed through the one

But that afternoon while typing I felt a shock of electricity, a
burning sensation in the pinky of my right hand so severe it traveled up my arm through my neck, stopping only at the base of my skull, where it jumped and leaped, seeming to threaten to invade my brain. Immediately, to fruition on the page. There was no ignoring this pain.

The Celibacy Club
By Janice Eidus
ISBN: 0-87286-322-0
Paperback Original
This vibrant new collection of nineteen short stories by the two-time winner of the prestigious O. Henry Prize is by turns erotic, wildly funny, bawdy, and poignant. Eidus explores our contemporary obsessions: sex-both safe and not-so-safe; Prozac, the '90s drug of choice; Nautilus machine mania; the sinister attraction of vampires; film star James Dean; and rock 'n' roll icons Axl Rose and Elvis-all with dazzling range.
Janice Eidus' quirky characters seek transcendence in exotic ways, and they sometimes even find it. These unpredictable, up-to-the minute stories demonstrate that Janice Eidus continues to be "... one of the freshest and most idiosyncratic voices from the fiction frontier." ( San Francisco Chronicle
"Janice Eidus is more entertaining than the Marquis de Sade in a dress. Her juxtaposition of emotion-from the brazenly wicked to the ardently tender- will leave the reader breathless. The Celibacy Club is definitely a club you will want to join." –Lucinda Ebersole & Richard Peabody, co-editors of

Urban Bliss
By Janice Eidus
ISBN: 0-87286-339-5
Paperback Original
Babette Bliss, the decidedly modern heroine of this comical novel, suffers from an unsettling problem: ambivalence. She has taken leave from her job with an avant-garde New York theater to face her dilemmas concerning her marriage, career, and soul. Should she forgive her philandering husband, George Harrison, an Iowa-raised corporate lawyer with an uncanny resemblance to Babette's favorite Beatle? Is it time, in fact, for her and George to have a baby? Or should she have an affair? She is thrown into even deeper confusion when Shara-Rose, her leather-clad therapist, decides to give up her practice and become a rock star.
No matter where Babette looks, abandonment is everywhere. So can she really desert her theater, at a time when the company is faced with eviction? To sort things out, she decides to live by herself again- only to team up with an unexpected roommate. Filled with subtle irony and insight

THE CELIBACY CLUB by Janice Eidus
City Lights February 1997; $9.95 softcover 199 pp; ISBN 0-87286-322-0
This is a group of short stories that looks at life in the 90s, at our culture, and our present-day obsessions. Among the stories are: Elvis living in the Bronx and dressed as a Hasidic Jew; a woman who falls madly in love with a Nautilus exercise machine; Barbie goes to group therapy because her publicist says so; a young girl makes friends with a mermaid; what happens to a teen actor after his TV show gets cancelled; a male writing student has a sexual relationship with his female teacher; one night, in bed, she suddenly dies because of a weak heart; a male screenwriter starts fooling around, only to find out, by accident, that his wife is also fooling around. The title story is about a club/therapy club for people who chosen to be celibate. I really enjoyed this book. The stories are very easy to read, and they're the sort of situations that could happen to anyone. The author does a very good job at putting the reader right in the middle of each story. This is well worth the reader's time. Reviewed by Paul Lappen 8/15/98 Order this book from Amazon.com Books
