By Amy Benfer L et it be known that Dave Eggers does not want to be interviewed. In the past month, the editor of McSweeney's, a literary quarterly that even Harper's magazine editor Lewis Lapham thinks is hip, and the author of a "memoir-y kind of thing" called "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," has been interviewed by the New York Times, the Village Voice, Time magazine and assorted publications too numerous to mention. Michiko Kakutani, the famously cantankerous New York Times book reviewer, has agreed that Eggers' talent is "staggering," as have writers David Foster Wallace, Rick Moody, David Sedaris and David Remnick (who published an excerpt of his book in the New Yorker under the title of "Here Come the Orphans!" earlier this year.) His readings are standing room only, the new issue of McSweeney's sells out as soon as it arrives (shipping is rather slow, as Eggers decided to have them printed in Iceland), and even his publisher ran out of review copies of the book a week before its publication date. The book in question, Eggers' first, is about a boy (Dave Eggers) raising another boy (his brother, Christopher, called "Toph"). The Eggers' parents died of cancer within 32 days of each other, leaving Dave, then 21, as the surrogate parent of Toph, then 8. They leave their home in the wealthy suburb of Lake Forest (outside Chicago) and follow sister Beth, then 23, to Berkeley, where she attends law school.

Eggers, Dave A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
Genre Memoir (375 pp.) Keywords Abandonment Adolescence Alcoholism Cancer ... Survival Summary An imaginative recreation of profound personal loss, the resulting changes wrought by unexpected responsibility as well as opportunity, all occurring during the progression from late adolescence into young adulthood, this work is centered on the death and its aftermath of the author's parents 32 days apart, when the author was 21 years old (in 1991). With two siblings embarked on their own careers, it was Dave who took on "parenthood" of their eight-year old brother, "Toph." The book details first, the mother's death, then, the life that Eggers and Toph negotiate for themselves and with each other after they move from suburban Chicago to Berkeley, California, and, finally, Dave's return visit to his hometown, wherein he seeks to exorcise some ghosts. In between these landmarks are reflections on family relationships, including that with a shadowy, alcoholic father; the launch of a satiric magazine, "Might" (a title meant to signify both power and possibility); concern for wounded friends; attempts to lead a "normal" life.

Subject: Attn David Eggers: Harvard Advocate Interview Dear David, I'd first like to say that I hope that, by the time you get these questions, you've extricated yourself from under the perfidious yoke of those Massachusetts McSweeneys. Talk about a McFaustian bargain! We've got a light question for you before we get to the ones culled from the more serious elements of our staff.
    0) In his appreciation of your work in the online magazine Feed (www.feedmag.com), Keith Gessen suggests that you might have been able to handle Puck had you been chosen for the "Real World" instead of that sniveling weakling Judd. But in your book you seem to be a little startled by Puck, even cowed. What do you think? Could you have put Puck in his place and kept his scabbed-up fingers out the peanut butter? A HEARTBREAKING WORK OF STAGGERING GENIUS 1) One of the most interesting aspects of A.H.W.O.S.G. is the consistently self-deprecatory tone. In the preface, for example, a list precisely maps out all the symbolism in the work. On one level, this undercuts the obvious amount of work that's been put into the book by suggesting that the book can be reduced to a very basic level of meaning. But it also functions to point out how much more complicated the book is than the chart makes it seem. The book has been criticized for precisely this reason: in the guise of self-deprecation, it's self-aggrandizing. What are your thoughts on this and, in general, the relation of the author to the text?

Dave Eggers, the 29-year-old editor of the determinedly odd literary journal , has written a memoir that wreaks delirious havoc by turning the autobiographical genre on its head. As its flippant title makes riotously clear, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is altogether a triumphant literary debut.
The laughter begins to stick in our throats when Eggers recounts the harrowing cancer death of his 51-year-old mother. He unflinchingly evokes the awful eternity of watching a dying parent’s final days - "All words will be considered her last, until they are followed by others." Some readers will undoubtedly be offended by Eggers’s irreverence, but the jokes are an honest expression of the fragile human impulse to seek humor in the things that we fear the most:
I worry for us. I worry that any minute someone - the police, a child welfare agency, a health inspector, someone - will burst in and arrest me, or maybe just make fun of me, shove me around, call me bad names, and then take Toph away, will bring him somewhere where the house is kept clean, where laundry is done properly and frequently, where the parental figure or figures can cook and do so regularly, where there is no running around the house poking each other with sticks from the backyard.

By Mark Horowitz W hat do you do if the prepublication buzz on your first book is so frenzied that The New Yorker has bought an excerpt, editors at Time are clamoring for your services, and the New York Times "I'm not looking forward to being around for this," Eggers insists, scrambling around his Park Slope apartment to get ready for the flight that night. Readers are advised in the preface that "many parts have been fictionalized," but it is not really clear how much is "real" here and how much is spoof. What could be funny about the final days of Eggers' mother's battle with stomach cancer, just a month after the loss of his father to another form of cancer? Eggers' seemingly flippant, but piercingly observant style, allows hilarity to lead the way in a very personal and revealing recounting of the loss of his parents. Barely out of college, Eggers is responsible for the care of his eight-year-old brother, Toph. Together they relocate from the Midwest to Berkeley, where their sister Beth is in law school. Young, eager, full of himself, Eggers teams up with like-minded pals in the media-crazed early 90s to create the satirical magazine Might , while also making sure he's there for Toph's Little League games and parent/teacher conferences. Eggers voices the classic youthful assumption that the world belongs (or should belong) to him. From anyone else this might be incredibly annoying, but so much is tongue-in-cheek in this work. Not just for the MTV-fan age group, this is a very entertaining, well-written book.
