Dave Eggers on the Paperback Publication of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
"I think this book is kind of maleable. I've never really wanted to put it away and be done with it foreverthe second I 'finished' it, I wanted to dig back in and change everything around. So I'm looking forward to getting back into the text, and straightening and focusing and deleting. Most of all, I'm thrilled that Vintage will be letting me include all the cool chase scenes, previously censored."

The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2002

by Dave Eggers (Editor), Michael Cart (Series Editor)
Mariner Books
October 2002
ISBN: 0618246940
Guide Rating -
Houghton Mifflin's Best American Series features genre-specific writing collected and edited by notable editors. Members of the series include "The Best American Science and Nature Writing", "The Best American Essays", "The Best American Mystery Stories", and "The Best American Sports Writing." The most recent addition to the series to hit the stands, "The Best American Nonrequired Reading", is new in 2002 and flaunts a departure from its forbearers: the lack of a unifying genre.
One might expect such a ironic twist from the collection's editor, Dave Eggers. Eggers is known chiefly for the very bestselling memoir, "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," which in 2000 turned him into an overnight pop-cultural icon. Eggers has been busy this past year with the release of his first novel, "You Shall Know Our Velocity," and his work at San Francisco's 826 Valencia writing lab.

posted April 04, 2001 at 10:58 am ET Went to a Dave Eggers reading of AHWOSG last night. So. So. Good. I am now in love with Mr. Eggers and want to have several of his children (somehow). However, when I asked if I could see his nipples, I was firmly (but gently) rebuffed. Anyway, he's really quite funny and charming and interesting and when he talks you want to go write beautiful things, make melodious music, design interesting things, and just generally grab the tiger by the tail and kick the ass of the whole world, all of which I am now eager to do all at once. So watch out world, I'm coming for you motherfuckers!* * By "coming for you motherfuckers", I might possibly mean "preparing for another long night on the couch watching Silver Spoons reruns rather than doing of any of that other stuff I mentioned previously". But man, I'm going to watch that TV like it's never been watched before.

" ...for Enjoyment of This Book ". Un

Dave Eggers Screwed Me Too By David J. Plotkin I lost patience with Dave Eggers months ago. After attempting to conduct a simple e-mail interview, I discovered that his temper and self-righteousness make him impossible to deal with. But some background is necessary. Vanity Fair, George or Auto Trader Zagat New York City Restaurant Guide 2001 The job provided many insights into the shadowy world of restaurant-guide publishing, including the fact that, at 21 years of age, I was by far the oldest employee. Oh, and none of us were actually permitted to visit the restaurants up for review. We also had to dress in business attire, unlike the employees of the dot-coms in the building with us, who were not even required to wear shoes. bunch. And, as if to answer a prayer, I was permitted by my boss to include quotes from this star of the literary community. First, though, I had to contact Eggers and convince him to be interviewed.

    The Corrections
A friend of mine lent me this book by a ravishing young author called Dave Eggers. I was excited at first glance, because I thought, 'here's a guy who writes in the same silly first-person style that I do, and he's like, sold a billion books or something.' So you can see why I would want him to succeed. And not to imply that he anything but succeeded, I have included these footnotes for anyone who

But perhaps more noteworthy is the laundry list of culturally beneficial and generally open-minded endeavors which Eggers has undertaken since achieving his literary superstardom. Among these include the founding of the McSweeneys literary journal and website ( www.mcsweeneys.net ), which has provided a high-profile and artist friendly forum for authors unknown and famous. • "You Shall Know Our Velocity" by Dave Eggers Stop squawking about the money, the youth and the fame there's a real writer among us, and Dave Eggers' new novel proves it. By Peter Kurth I don't think it's possible for anyone who writes for a living to be objective about Dave Eggers' second book and first novel "You Shall Know Our Velocity." As a writer, I can't be objective about Eggers at all, given the staggering, and to me somewhat heartbreaking, success of his bestselling memoir, "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius." There's no point in pretending that writers aren't envious. All I know is, if a book of mine ever got a paperback sale of $1.4 million and a few million more for the movie rights, I wouldn't be bellyaching about the way the press covered it, as Eggers so famously does. That's what makes you want to hate him. That and the money. Click Here There's too much Eggers in my head, is what I'm saying. I need relief. And, presto! that's what Eggers' new novel is about: headache relief.

AN INTERVIEW WITH FORMER AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB FRONT MAN MARK EITZEL BY DAVE EGGERS national tour with Tuatara, another Buck side project that includes members of Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, the Young Fresh Fellows and Los Lobos. If I remember correctly, it wasn't too long ago that you said that you'd never want to work with a band again. Now you're part of some sort of alt-rock supergroup. What happened? I guess when I said that, I meant that I didn't want to be in a band that was a complete democracy all the time. I was married to those guys (in American Music Club) for 15 years, so I guess I didn't want to be in that marriage anymore. But I have no problem being in bands. I love collaborating. It's just a matter of getting the right person to collaborate with. Anyway, this whole tour is not about me; it's about Tuatara and the Minus 5, and I'm just the asshole that gets onstage and brings everybody down. Your live shows are extraordinary for how much emotion you put into each song as if the emotions or people or whatever inspired them are still there. Do you ever find that some songs are difficult to play, that there's too much "there" there? It's only when I can't bring myself to feel them that they're difficult. I guess I don't have a problem with playing things live. I guess sometimes, if the crowd is no good, or the moment is kind of stupid, you feel like a fool, like you're pissing in the wind. Otherwise no, I'm shameless. I try to perform the way I write songs, without irony, without reflecting my own cynicism too much, you know? You just do what the song asks for you to do. The song makes a demand on you, and you try to fulfill it.

Dave did an interview a few weeks ago, on The New Yorker website, that covered a lot of the themes of the new book, so we chose questions from those sent by readers that didn't overlap too much with that interview. We also grouped them according to similar subject matter. Many of them cover the process of publishing a book like this through McSweeney's. If you find yourself reading about, say, the book being published in England, and you don't care about the book being published in England, please feel free to skip to whatever seems more interesting. Q: Why all the mystery surrounding the title of your new book?
Shawn Clark, Texas A: There was no good reason at all. I just thought the title should come out the same time as the book. Probably a dumb idea. The title is You Shall Know Our Velocity. Q: How's the family? I don't want to pry too much, but we did come to know your family with your first book, so it's natural to wonder how everyone's doing. Did you finally get a dog?
