Review of Greg Egan's "Permutation City"
30 October 1995 Executive Summary:
A solid, non-dark, hard-SF exploration of some of the things that may happen when we get computers powerful enough to accurately simulate intelligent systems. Raises some fascinating philosophical questions, and explores the edges of them, but introduces some untenable magic near the end for the sake of the action. Recommended to the general SF reader, and especially to cellular-automaton and artificial life fans. Background: Western civilization, circa 2050. Not much has changed in fifty-odd years; not really enough to be convincing. Egan had to set his story far enough in the future to get really really powerful computers, but he has no particular interest in the politics, sociology, or otherwise of this future world. That's OK. Computers are ubiquitous and highly networked, and computer time is available in massive quantities on the QIPS ("quadrillion instructions per second") market. A programmer will casually add a few billion computing elements to a computation on the chance it'll be useful, quasi-intelligent programs are available to filter your incoming mail by how you'd feel after reading it, automatic program-verification finally seems to be working. That sort of thing. It's possible to create a Copy of yourself in the global computing net, if you can afford it. These Copies have no legal status at the moment, although since some of them are Copies of very powerful individuals whose originals are no longer around, they are beginning to have considerable influence. Controversy and upheaval are expected, but they form no part of the plot, and we never find out whether or not they actually happen.

As the body count climbs, Marid is pressured to make use of brain implants the rest of the population has been using for a long time. Marid has avoided them thus far, seeking his own escape from reality via the pills he constantly pops. It's a detective type story told in the first person following Marid's journey. Entertaining from start to finish and the guilty party is not disclosed until the final pages. Good (8) EGAN,GREG

    Greg Egan : Distress
    (Millenium h/back, 1995, 342pp)
Australian Greg Egan's rise from being a proficient and prolific short story writer (publishing extensively in both the USA and Britain) to excellent novelist has been rapid. Just three novels between 1983 and 1994, then he hits the mark spot on with Distress a genuinely mind-blowing piece of science fiction, very much with the emphasis upon the 'science'. Egan belongs with that select coterie of writers, like the other two 'Gregs', Bear and Benford, that can transmute the wildest reaches of scientific theory into astonishing fiction. Distress is a solid slab of ideas from beginning to end, all of them coming at the reader in quick succession, but cunningly presented so that most readers will catch on pretty quick. Not a book for the scientifically-challenged perhaps (and certainly not for anyone enamoured of 'creation science'), but for lovers of pure quill science fiction, this is a delight. The story revolves around a scientific journalist, Andrew Worth, who is burned out by his recent work on biotech, and grabs at a chance for a relatively 'quiet' assignment, a profile of a leading physicist, Violet Mosala, who is taking part in a conference presenting rival 'Theories Of Everything' (literally the combining of all physical laws into one mega-Law explaining the Universe, the Holy Grail of physics). However, as he rapidly discovers upon arriving at the conference site, there are greater things at stake, that Mosala's own TOE might just change the very laws of the Universe altogether, and that there are very factions and cults who want very much to influence the outcome, one way or another.

"Look Away" by George Alec Effinger
The American Civil War has ground to a halt, the two sides seperated by the Green Line, a zone patrolled by an international peace-keeping force. Two young Confederate soldiers seperate from their unit and move along the line, looking for a way to be useful. The War Between the States is a potentially rich field for alternate histories and indeed has been used much in that way. Unfortunately (and by Sturgeon's Law) the treatments tend to the dull: e.g. "The South won!". In a strange way, you might think something similar about George Alec Effinger. Althought there is an underlying cleverness and knowledge to his writing, this has yet to fully realise in a truly great novel. Effinger can certainly be funny ("The Red Tape Wars", "The Bird of Time") and even draw an interesting world ("When Gravity Fails"). But at times his work is more a tour of interesting ideas than an exploration, something the "Marid Audran" series is only beginning to correct. "Look Away" delivers on both these fronts. It attempts something daring and inventive with the American Civil War and Effinger gets to think out loud about the South, Reconstruction and realpolitik. These are complicated (and to some, emotional) issues but he doesn't go all Heinlein and start lecturing the reader. He also displays a keen skill for voice and dialogue, making each character sound right. (This is fairly rare skill, particularly in SF. Think of the number of times you've heard ancient Romans sound like Californians.) The rhythms of Southern speech are well rendered without descending into faux-Magaret Mitchell. "Look Away" is an entertaining and thoughtful read.
