Russell Edson. The Tormented Mirror . Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2001. 87 pp, $12.95. Report from the Rabbit Hole: Notes on Russell Edson's The Tormented Mirror When I read Russell Edson's new book, The Tormented Mirror , I could not help but think of bricks and translation. That's because, in the critical/burlesque portions of my brain, are the ever-present voices of Peter Levitt and ee cummings, each remarking respectively that: "all poetry is translation," and "would you hit a woman with a child? No, I'd hit her with a brick." With Russell Edson, a.k.a. Little Mister Prose Poem, a reader receives both aforementioned quotations at full-throttle, while being verbally throttled, in a good way, of course. Edson translates the human psyche, from a language without words into language with very specific expression. One interprets his work and truly feels as if what they're reading is some kind of condensed essence, like a distilled Borges or Gogol. Our intuition tells us that Kafka's native tongue somehow lurks wiggling in the dark corners of his poems: the presence is undeniable. In The Tormented Mirror , Edson throws considerable quantities of brick at human consciousness which is also a brick that Edson's original brick melts into. When one says "brick" often enough, or reads "brick" too many times on paper, it stops being "brick" and becomes much more like hieroglyphics or Prekrit.

Freaky, Twisted Delights from Russell Edson's Brain Russell Edson is a modern American master of weird prose poetry. If you don't believe me, consider the evidence. Let's call these samples from his 1985 book The Wounded Breakfast Exhibit A: THE WAY THINGS ARE There was a man who had too many mustaches. It began with the one on his upper lip, which he called his normal one. He would say, this is my normal mustache. But then he would take out another mustache and put it over his real mustache, saying, this is my normal one. Then he would take out another mustache and put it over the other two and say, this one's normal. And then another over the other three, saying, this one's abnormal. And after several more layers he was asked why he wanted to have so many normal and abnormal mustaches. He said, it's not that I want to, it's simply the way things are... Then he took all the mustaches off. They like a rest, he murmured. The first mustache, which we thought was real, was not. We mentioned to him that we thought his first mustache was real.

Letter to the Editor
Of course, with a magazine entitled Sycamore Review you're going to get a lot of "Good Doggie" poems. Also, poetry has long been "good doggie" stuff. It's an inbred style from the centuries. After all, a poem ain't no good unless it's pretty and calm and not very understandable. Poetry, they think, is supposed to be a quiet yawn. And it is. Nobody gets excited about poetry. Nobody can. Well.... sure, Charles Bukowski The titles in the index for this issue are hypertext links to the works themselves. The author names in the index and in the text are links to the contributor's note as it stood at the time of the issue's publication. Currently, we only plan to produce on-line editions of issues that go out of print.

The Amalgamation of Locals 47 and 767
by Marl Young
(Reprinted from Article that appeared in The Overture in December 1988) In late 1950 while attending UCLA, I met a graduate student and professional singer by the name of Estelle Edson. The subject of her graduate thesis was "The Negro in Radio." Ironically, she discovered that there were scarcely any blacks working in the broadcast industry in any capacity. Because I was a musician, she felt that I would have some insight as to the role of the black musician in the broadcast industry. As far as I knew, there were no blacks working regularly in the industry, especially on the networks – ABC, CBS and NBC. She asked me if the fact that the Musicians Unions were segregated contributed to the scarcity of blacks in the industry. It certainly could have been a contributing factor in that all the contracts for employment of musicians in the broadcast and motion picture studios were negotiated by the then all-white union, Local 47. The black union, Local 767 merely adopted the scales negotiated by Local 47, if and when a black musician got a studio call. Prior to this, meetings of black and white musicians were held

I went right up to the nursery and climbed into the crib, and assumed the famous fetal position. They didn't know what to make of it. They stood by the crib looking down at me. They were young. This was their house. Instead of an infant, a grown man is in the nursery. Of course they hadn't planned on anything like this. It never occurred to them that anything like this could happen. I had made my move. All I could do was to keep the position, pretending to sleep . . . by Russell Edson (from "The Tunnel: Selected Poems of Russell Edson")

I just picked out poems I liked by poets who were writing within the last 40 years. Well, mostly anyway. The selections are also affected by what I know about the membership of the mailing list, so while I enjoy every poem I send out, I wouldn't say that they perfectly represent my taste.
