The Road
There was a road that leads him to go to find a certain time where he sits.
Smokes quietly in the evening by the four legged table wagging its (well why not) tail, friendly chap.
Hears footsteps, looks to find his own feet gone.
The road absorbs everything with rumors of sleep.
And then he looked for himself and even he was gone.
Looked for the road and even that . . .

Antimatter On the other side of a mirror there's an inverse world, where the insane go sane; where bones climb out of the earth and recede to the first slime of love. And in the evening the sun is just rising. Lovers cry because they are a day younger, and soon childhood robs them of their pleasure. In such a world there is much sadness which, of course, is joy. The Autopsy In a back room a man is performing an autopsy on an old raincoat.
His wife appears in the doorway with a candle and asks, how does it go?
Not now, not now, I'm just getting to the lining, he murmurs with impatience.
I just wanted to know if you found any blood clots?
Blood clots?!

Russell Edson: THE TUNNEL
There simply isn't anything, anywhere, that is quite like the crazy, painful, wildly funny and oddly inexorable work of Russell Edson, the most extraordinary American prose poet of the century. This volume gathers his best work from seven collections over thirty years. " The Tunnel is a magnificent book. The microscopic precision and intuitive leaps evident throughout the book confirm that Edson is not merely an offbeat original but a profound contemporary poet deserving of wider recognition." THE PHILOSOPHERS
I think, therefore I am, said a man whose mother quickly hit him on the head, saying, I hit my son on the head, therefore I am.
No no, you've got it all wrong, cried the man.
So she hit him on the head again and cried, therefore I am.

Russell Edson (poem)
Like a white snail the toilet slides into the livingroom, demanding to be loved.
It is impossible, and we tender our sincerest regrets.
In the book of the heart there is no mention made of plumbing.
And though we have spent our intimacy many times with you,
you belong to an unfortunate reference, which we would rather not embrace...
The toilet slides out of the livingroom like a white snail,
flushing with grief.

You're not, not that way; you're supposed to think, not hit, cried the man.
. . . I think, therefore I am, said the man.
I hit, therefore we both are, the hitter and the one who gets hit, said the man's mother.
But at this point the man had ceased to be; unconscious he could not think. But his mother could. So she thought, I am, and so is my unconscious son, even if he doesn't know it . . .

APE You haven't finished your ape, said mother to father, who had monkey hair and blood on his whiskers.
I've had enough monkey, cried father.
You didn't eat the hands, and I went to all the trouble to make onion rings for its fingers, said mother.
I'll just nibble on its forehead, and then I've had enough, said father.
I stuffed its nose with garlic, just like you like it, said mother.
Why don't you have the butcher cut these apes up? You lay the whole thing on the table every night; the same fractured skull, the same singed fur; like someone who died horribly. These aren't dinners, these are postmortem dissections.
Try a piece of its gum, I've stuffed its mouth with bread, said mother.
Ugh, it looks like a mouth full of vomit. How can I bite into its cheek with bread spilling out of its mouth? cried father.
Break one of the ears off, they're so crispy, said mother.

The Tormented Mirror

Russell Edson, widely considered the master of the Prose Poem, has produced a magnificent volume of poetry that draws the reader in like a moth to a flame, like a sailor to a siren, like a bear to honey ... Edson's poems freely chart courses from the animal in us to the "civilized" in us to the spiritual in us, and everywhere in-between and even un-nameable places deep within and below us, and high, high above us, near articulation ... These poems are ingenious, and they cannot be summarized,...

Customer Reviews Suicide hotline operators should simply read from Edson. This is life affirming stuff. I insist you also get his new one, The Tormented Mirror, and anything by James Tate, especially Shroud of the Gnome. These two will startle even the most steadfast poetry-haters. I read this book with a poetry reading book club and it was one of the club's favorites. Edson writes often surreal philosophical fables which are easy to enter into because of their familiar, "There once was a woman who..." language. However, this river runs deep. The Tunnel Selected Poems of Russell Edson
Russell Edson's prose poems constitute some of the most original American art of the 20th century. Like the boxes of Joseph Cornell, each is a miniature world, eerie in its logic, unsettling in its ruthless fun, dazzling in its invention. Much of Edson's corpus has been out of print or difficult to find for some time now. This new selection offers his own favorites from seven previous collections, restoring Edson to his large and international audience and introducing him to new readers who are committed to what is truly original and illuminating in language, imagination, and poetry. Russell Edson, The Blank Book The Blank Book The book was blank, all the words had fallen out.
Her husband said, the book is blank.
His wife said, a funny thing happened to me on my way to the present moment. I was shaking the book, to get all the typos out, and all of a sudden all the words and punctuation fell out too. Maybe the whole book was a typo?
And what did you do with the words? said her husband.
