- Book Review, by Edgeworth, Maria
Annotation

Maria Edgeworth wrote the Absentee as a companion to her brilliantly comic Castle Rackrent.
From the Publisher
"The Absentee (1812) is the third of Maria Edgeworth's brilliantly comic novels on Irish life. In it, she wittily exposes the pernicious consequences for Ireland and for the wider world of absentee landownership." Lord Clonbrony and his ambitious, worldly wife lead an extravagant social life in London on the proceeds of their estates in Ireland. Their son, Lord Colambre, refusing to marry the heiress arranged for him by his mother, decides instead to investigate, incognito, how the family estates in Ireland are being managed. Appalled at the corruption, mismanagement, and poverty he finds, but encouraged by the affectionate goodwill of the tenants and the honesty of his father's agent, he finds a solution to the problem of his father's debts and his family's wilful indifference.

MARIA EDGEWORTH

(1767 - 1849) novelist
Born 1 st Jan 1767, Black Bourton, Oxfordshire, England Second child of Richard Lovell Edgeworth; educated in England. The family went back to Edgeworthstown, County Longford, in 1782, where Maria became her father's chief assistant in running the property and educating his numerous other children. Her first publication, Letters to Literary Ladies (1795), was much influenced by her father's ideas on women's education. The Parent's Assistant was published in 1796. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent (1800), was an immediate success. Scott said in the original edition of Waverley that his aim was 'in some distant degree to emulate the admirable Irish portraits drawn by Miss Edgeworth.' Another novel, Belinda , followed in 1801. Essays on Irish Bulls (1802) was written by herself and her father. Visited Brussels and Paris 1802. Received a proposal of marriage from a Swedish count, Edelcrantz; refused from a sense of duty to her family. Back at Edgeworthstown in 1803 she wrote sitting at a table in the family sitting-room, undisturbed by surrounding talk and activity. Her father encouraged her, provided plots, and sometimes inserted long passages of his own composition.

Gothic Labyrinth Next Center Home Contact Maria Edgeworth is best known for her innovative and influential novel, Castle Rackrent written when when she was 18. While her other works were suggested and edited by her father Richard Lovell Edgeworth , author, inventor, educational reformer, and friend of Erasmus Darwin , he was away when Castle Rackrent was written and submitted for publication. Nevertheless, she credited him with joint authorship. After this, she wrote a few didactic, improving novels to order until Father told her to stop; she obediently desisted. Byron commented after meeting the Edgeworth s, One would never have guessed she could write her name ; whereas her father talked, not as if he could write nothing else, but as if nothing else was worth writing. Edgeworth was the aunt of Thomas Lovell Beddoes , and an influence on the works of Jane Austen who sent her a copy of Emma Apparently Edgeworth was not pleased with it and did not acknowledge the gift. Elsewhere she wrote:

Quotations
How success changes the opinion of men! Those who are animated by hope can perform what would seem impossibilities to those who are under the depressing influence of fear. It is not so easy to do good as those who have never attempted it may imagine. Well, some people talk of morality, and some of religion, but give me a little snug property. Confidence is the best proof of love. We cannot judge either of the feelings or of the characters of men with perfect accuracy, from their actions or their appearance in public; it is from their careless conversations, their half-finished sentences, that we may hope with the greatest probability of success to discover their real character. Beauties are always curious about beauties, and wits about wits.

After the death of his first wife, Richard Edgeworth married three more times, producing a family of twenty-two children. Maria was educated in England until the age of fourteen, and after she came back to live in Edgeworthstown, County Longford, her life became considerably influenced by the educational and scientific interests of her father, who encouraged her writing and whom she assisted in his writing and in managing the estate. A writer of considerable reputation, both literary and moral, her work was admired by many of the significant literary figures of her day, most notably by Sir Walter Scott, who cited her work as a major influence on his books. A pioneer of both the regional and historical novel (though she liked to refer to her books as 'tales', considering 'novels' morally suspect) she was commercially very successful. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent (1800) was also her first Irish tale. The next such tale was

EDGEWORTH ON SCOTT
In October 1814, Maria Edgeworth wrote a letter to James Ballantyne which was passed on to the author of Waverley. The fact that the letter carried the motto "Aut Scotus, aut Diabolus" (Scott or the Devil) and that Ballantyne's reply concludes with information about Scott's future publication indicates that the pretence of anonymity just didn't matter. She dislikes the interpolations but approves of the 'beautiful descriptions of nature', and above all of the characterisations of 'the various gradations of Scotch feudal character'. Little mention is made of Rose and less of Waverley himself. It is clearly the peripheral which interests her. Scott and Maria Edgeworth corresponded till 1830 on almost every subject: on literature, on the fate of the poor, on domestic, intimate matters and on the visits each made to the other's country. Lockhart describes the visit made to Abbotsford like this: Vol. IV, 120 The next month - August 1823 - was one of the happiest in Scott's life. Never did I see a brighter day at Abbotsford than that on which Miss Edgeworth first arrived there- never can I forget her look and accent when she was received by him at his archway, and exclaimed, 'Everything about you is exactly what one ought to have wit enough to dream'. What is curious is that even though this was a remarkable event in Scott's life, cementing a firm friendship, Lockhart gets the visit over and done with as soon as possible: a paragraph suffices. Even stranger then, is Lockhart's affirmation, made while dealing with Scott's visit to Edgeworthstown, that
