Enjoy an afternoon of Americana music and literature from beloved North Carolina novelist Clyde Edgerton and fellow band members, Jack King and Matt Kendrick. The author of "Raney" and "Walking Across Egypt," Edgerton will read (and sing!) from his forthcoming novel, "Lunch at the Piccadilly" (Algonquin Books, September 2003). It's vintage Edgerton - a story about a musician/awning installer's escapades with his elderly, irrepressible Aunt Lil. Edgerton is a former member of The Tarwater Band and a professor of creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Jack King, the band's guitar player, plays professionally in North Carolina. He's a member of the group Brice Street.

HOTSEAT- Clyde Edgerton: Pilot, professor, papa... Published March 25, 2004, in issue #0312 of The Hook BY LISA PROVENCE LISA@READTHEHOOK.COM The last time Clyde Edgerton did a reading for the Virginia Festival of the Book, he had the audience at Culbreth collectively about to wet its pants. And this was with Lee Smith, no slouch in hilarity herself, the pair of them blowing poor, serious Paule Marshall off the stage. Edgerton proved so popular a draw that he sold out this year's festival luncheon in a matter of hours. Some writers chafe at being labeled "Southern." Not Edgerton, a North Carolina native and proud of it. "Everybody has to be from somewhere," he points out. "As long as I'm not described as a bad writer, I'm happy." Edgerton is as quick to poke fun at his own foibles as those of his characters. When he was an undergrad at the University of North Carolina, he contributed columns to the Daily Tar Heel supporting Barry Goldwater. By 1972, he was campaigning for George McGovern.

Introduction: Clyde Edgerton's Where Trouble Sleeps
Article # : Section : BOOK WORLD Issue Date : 368 Words Author : Editor
Novelists get in the business for numerous reasons. For some it's a love of language; for others it's the urge to rattle the Establishment; for still others it's perhaps a means to exorcise personal demons. None of these apply to Clyde Edgerton. He's just trying to tell the best darn yarn he canand maybe teach us a lesson to boot.
Edgerton has set all but one of his novels in the quaint little town of Listre, which resembles his own hometown of Bethesda, North Carolina. The folks in Where Trouble Sleeps are kindly, God-fearing Baptists, with a few good ol' boys thrown in to make things interesting. Growing up surrounded by twenty-three aunts and uncles who loved swapping stories, it seemed natural for Edgerton to take up writing tall tales. Besides teaching English and writing at several southern colleges and universities, he plays piano and banjo with his wife, Susan Ketchin, in the Tarwater Band.

Trouble Comes to Town: Commentary on Clyde Edgerton's Where Trouble Sleeps
Article # : Section : BOOK WORLD Issue Date : 2,963 Words Author : Robert Gingher
In his seventh novel, Clyde Edgerton continues to exploit the comic possibilities of introducing an outsider into a familiar, highly mannered environment. Flimflammer Jack Umstead (aka Rusty Smith, Delbert Harris, Delbert Jones, and so forth) may remind readers of con men from Mark Twain to Flannery O'Connor to Guy Owen. Like a hawk in a chicken yard, he swoops down on a rural town in his stolen 1950 Buick Eight. But the dramatic irony driving Where Trouble Sleeps is that though many of the denizens of this rustic hamlet are easy marks, some are dumb like foxes and are onto the stranger's motives and credibility from the get-go.
    Back to basics
The clash between (1) the worldly town and the outsider or (2) the hustler and bumpkin village informs everything from Cervantes' Don Quixote to Twain's The Mysterious Stranger to Crocodile Dundee. The late John Gardner, among others, often wrote and lectured about the basic plots of fiction. According to my colleague Jim Schaap, about twenty years ago, at the Bread Loaf Writers' Conferences, Gardner defined these as two: (1) "man goes on a trip" and (2) "stranger comes to town." Gardner, whose works on the nature of fiction are probably as well known as his novels, noted that the first plot was more interesting because readers like active protagonists who either triumph or fail in their journeys. The other plot uses a passive protagonist, the victim of an outsider. Even though most contemporary writers work in this second form, according to Gardner, audiences never like it as well.
