These early works of high fantasy drew strong praise from J. R. R. Tolkien (see especially Letter 199 in the collected letters), C. S. Lewis (see the Tribute to E. R. They are written in a meticulously recreated Jacobean prose style, seeded throughout with fragments, often acknowledged but often frankly stolen, from his favorite authors and genres: Homer and Sappho Shakespeare and Webster Norse Saga and French medieval lyric. They exhibit a thoroughly aristocratic sensibility; heroes and villains alike maintain an Olympian indifference to convention. The Zimiamvia books were not conceived as a trilogy but as part of a larger work left incomplete by Eddison's death. In fact

Belated Reviews #19: E.R. Eddison
For most purposes, two of Eddison's works matter, "The Worm Ouroboros", published in 1926 (I've seen 1922 listed), and the Zimiamvian trilogy, written over the two decades that followed. "The Worm Ouroboros" (***+) is an epic fantasy told for its own sake. Eddison was drunk on the English language, and produced a florid, elaborate, somewhat archaic prose, with many long passages and (he hated to see one of his sentences come to an end) relatively few periods. But it works. At first the style is in the way, then it stops irritating, and at some point you realize that it's drawn you in. Eddison was also drunk on fantasy, in the tradition of bygone centuries, with larger-than-life heroic characters climbing the unclimbable, slaying the unslayable, and generally being more concerned with glory than with whether or not next year's crops were planted. Again, it works. (Introducing a story as a dream is an old convention, and one that used to be in more common use. It dates back to a time when a dream was thought of as something that one could be granted, rather than purely as the product of the unconscious mind. As such, calling a story a dream could reinforce the suspension of disbelief, rather than undercut it.)

The Worm Ouroboros , primo VERO capolavoro fantasy e libro apprezzato dallo stesso Tolkien Haggard
Ouroboros summa di quattro decadi di letture, studi e fantasie!

    The Worm Ouroboros
    E.R. Eddison
    Review date: 15/2/2001
    Publisher: Pan, 1971
Published: 1922 Often touted as a rival to The Lord of the Rings , Eddison's epic fantasy has more in common with the large scale of The Silmarillion . Eddison wrote four loosely linked novels while working as a civil servant, of which The Worm Ouroboros is the first and best known. Its subject is a war between the Demons and Witches, the latter aided by a willingness to act dishonourably and by the dread sorcery of their king, Gorice XII. The flaws in The Worm Ouroboros are fairly obvious, particularly at the beginning of the novel. The strangest is a narrator, who is very dull and who is even forgotten by Eddison after a couple of chapters. It is symptomatic of a more general fault, which is a lack of revision. Unlike Tolkien's writing, The Worm Ouroboros is clearly not the product of years of obsessive rewriting, background notes and singleminded vision. It reads far more as though it were written down in one sitting. There are problems with details of the background. Like Tolkien, Eddison uses familiar names from folklore for his peoples; there are Demons, Witches, Imps and so on. However, with the exception of the Ghouls, these all appear to be nations of human beings, and the result is that the reader is torn by the traditional ideas conjured up by these names and the way in which Eddison portrays them. Tolkien's dwarves and elves are far more like their traditional namesakes, and this is a lead which has been followed by just about every fantasy writer since.
