Son of a family with thirteen children, and urged by his father to become a lawyer, he entered the University of Turin. But, as what seems to be the fate of many great writers, he abandoned his studies of law; and against his father's wishes he took up medieval philosophy and literature, writing his thesis on Thomas Aquinas and earning his doctorate of philosophy in 1954. After this, Eco worked as a cultural editor for Italian Radio-Television and also lectured at the University of Turin (1956-64). In 1956, he published his first book, which was naturally an extension of his thesis: Il problema estetico in San Tommaso In 1959 he both published his second work and lost his job at the RAI. Sein Roman mag "Über Gott und die Welt" handeln, aber nicht über Michel Foucault, und dennoch wird es Leser geben, die ihre Interpretation Richtung Foucault trimmen. Eco kommt aus der Wissenschaft und führt sein Werk in den wissenschaftlichen Diskurs zurück, er könnte seinen Titel mit Bedacht und im Hinblick auf seine Fachkollegen gewählt haben, um sie als Interpreten bis ans Ende ihrer Tage zu beschäftigen. Für mich ist es zweifellos eine Ausgangsfrage meines Vortrags gewesen, inwieweit man Ecos Roman Das Foucaultsche Pendel Das Foucaultsche Pendel noch gar nicht erschienen war, schrieben es die ersten Kritiker, daß hier ausschließlich vom Physiker Léon Foucault die Rede sei. Weitere Titel Der Name der Rose Das Foucaultsche Pendel Die Insel des vorigen Tages Baudolino Im finstersten Mittelalter gelingt es einem jungen italienischen Schelm, durch seine lebhafte Phantasie und die Gabe, stets das zu formulieren, was andere gerne hören wollen, dem Leben als einfacher Bauerntöpel zu entfliehen und stattdessen an den Hof Kaiser Friedrichs zu kommen, der als Barbarossa bekannt ist. Baudolino lernt Friedrich im Nebel kennen und hilft dem verirrten Kaiser, wieder zu seinen Truppen zu finden. Dieser findet Gefallen an dem hellen Köpfchen und lässt ihn unterrichten. Sein erster Lehrherr, Bischof Otto, ist gerade dabei, eine Chronik zu verfassen. Und hier lernt Baudolino auch bereits ganz Wesentliches seine Zukunft: es kommt nicht immer darauf an, die Wahrheit zu erzählen. Wenn man davon überzeugt ist, dass etwas passiert sein kann, dass etwas existieren kann, dann sollte man davon berichten, als wäre es wahr. Eine Praktik, die Baudolino sich nicht erst aneignen muss.

You didn't know that Eco wrote the novel while holding down a day job as a university professor - following student theses, writing academic texts, attending any number of international conferences, and penning a column for Italy's weekly newsmagazine L'Espresso . Or that the portly 65-year-old semiotician is also a literary critic, a satirist, and a political pundit. Eco first rose to fame in Italy as a parodist in the early '60s. Like all the best satirists, he oscillates between exasperation at the depths of human dumbness, and the benign indulgence of a grandfather. Don't let that grandfatherly look fool you, though. Eco was taking apart striptease and TV anchormen back in the late '50s, before anyone had even heard of Roland Barthes, and way before taking modern culture seriously (deconstructing The Simpsons , psychoanalyzing Tintin) became everybody's favorite pomo sport. He has written extensively on medieval aesthetics, James Joyce, the nature of the open work, forms of mass communication and culture, Semiotics , and theories of reception. He has also written two novels, The Name of the Rose (1980) and Foucault's Pendulum (1988). This eclecticism is reflected by Eco's diverse professional interests. In addition to holding the chair of semiotics at the University of Bologna, he has been a regular contributor to numerous Italian newspapers and magazines, among them Il giorno, La stampa, the Corriere della sera, La repubblica, L'espresso, and Il manifesto. Between 1954 and 1959 Eco was editor for cultural programs at the Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI). Moreover, he has been at the forefront of a number of avant-garde organizations in Italy, notably the Gruppo 63. As one might expect, these interests are often mutually informing; his work in semiotics, for example, complements his cultural criticism and novels. In addition to his direct involvement in these activities, Eco has assumed the role of a kind of cultural historian, documenting the vicissitudes of various critical movements and cultural trends, not to mention his own earlier formulations and engagements. In this respect he exemplifies the engaged intellectual that he himself has often discussed. As he puts it in the preface to Travels in Hyperreality (1986), "My way of being involved in politics consists of telling others how I see daily life, political events, sometimes the way I look at a movie. I believe that it is my job as a scholar and a citizen to show how we are surrounded by 'messages,' products of political power, of economic power, of the entertainment industry and the revolution industry, and to say that we must know how to analyze and criticize them" (xi). Eco has managed to address a larger audience through his journalism and novels without suffering any decline in scholarly output.
