Wolfgang BINDER
“ The Slave Ship as Extended Metapher in Works by Herman Melville, Lino Novás Calvo, Charles Johnson, and John Hearne. ” For obvious reasons, the Middle Passage has - with the formidable exception of Olaudah Equiano´s account of 1789 - not occupied a prominent place in the slave narrative tradition. In the twentieth century, a certain number of African-American and Caribbean authors have, especially after 1980, reconstructed that traumatic experience and put it to fictional, poetic, and dramatic use.

Queer Caucus for Art business, October 2002
Co-Chairs’ Letter Dear Caucus comrades and friends, The theme in recent LGBT-art developments, at least in our personal experience, seems to be “incremental progress.” As an example, get this hot dish: The New York Times announced in August that its social pages will henceforth accept announcements of gay/lesbian unions, including portraits of the beaming betrothed. Photographer members take note: a rare opportunity to create a new genre from scratch. A More Serious Example: The “Forbidden Eakins” symposium at SUNY/Stony Brook’s Manhattan center on the Monday evening of Gay Pride Week (June 24), co-sponsored by QCA. Organized and moderated by our own Jonathan Katz, the panel discussion was aimed at airing the current scholarship on Eakins’s art in relation to gender and homo/sexuality which, as followers of these pages have been reading, has been so conspicuously absent from the mini-blockbuster at Philadelphia and now the Metropolitan. Besides Jonathan, seven speakers addressed a variety of aspects both personal and artistic. Jennifer Doyle (UC-Riverside) gave a broad introduction to the web of issues raised by Eakins’s work and methods, including not only sexuality but race, economics, and his connection to Walt Whitman, and exhorted scholars to examine their own methodological positions via the question, “What is your stake in Eakins’s work?” Following her lead, panelists each took a personal slant on the artist: Jonathan Weinberg (Getty Museum) discussed his own painting, which works from the same source photos that Eakins used, while Deborah Bright (RISD) pointed out that Eakins’s love of looking at male bodies should be related to the mass popular context of physique magazines and early commercial pornography. Other speakers were Martin Berger (SUNY-Buffalo), Michael Hatt (U of Nottingham), Michael Moon (Johns Hopkins), and James Smalls (UMD-Baltimore County).

Eakins was one of the earliest American artists to make photography an integral part of his creative process. For the first time in a major retrospective of his work, Thomas Eakins: American Realist will include some 120 photographs by the artist and his circle. Eakins is equally well-known for his portraits that, as deeply moving character studies, often reflect the complexities of American life at the turn of the century. His two controversial paintings of famous surgeons at work in their operating amphitheaters - The Gross Clinic and The Agnew Clinic - will be included. Also on view will be a group of other outstanding portraits, including Miss Van Buren, Professor Henry A. Rowland, The Thinker, and Mrs. William D. Frishmuth. The last comprehensive survey of Eakins's work was mounted by the Museum in 1982; it traveled to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Since that time, there has been a great deal of exciting new scholarship about Eakins and his times, and many previously unknown works by him have surfaced. Thomas Eakins: American Realist will introduce a new generation of the public to this great painter and key figure in American art.

Sammy Eakins started his musical career when he was four years old, The first song he learned to play on guitar was "Candyman" by Sammy Davis Jr. At age 13, he started experimenting with recording It was at this time that he really started to develop his carefree style of innovative guitar improvisation. His first paying gig came a year later at a dance for the mentally challenged. His band, Galaxy made $25 for the show and split it three ways. Despite the meager wages, Sammy stayed involved with music as much as possible throughout high school.
A milestone came when Sammy met his guitar idol, Steve Morse. Little did he know at the time that he would later get to work with the guitar master at a later date. Sam hit the road as a musician full time soon thereafter and made a name for himself. He received a few accolades along the way as well, most notably he received the Most Outstanding Musician award in a 4 state area of Missouri

Patricia Eakins
Kenneth Patchen's Sleepers Awake came to me as samizdat Sleepers , it seemed to me, as it has to many other readers, dauntingly fragmented, even if taken as a work of precursor postmodernist juxtapositional poetics. Although Sleepers is arguably Patchen's most ambitious work, it is not considered his masterpiece. That honor falls most frequently on The Journal of Albion Moonlight , another work of wonder and terror set in a moral universe as personal, as vivid, as lucent, as visionary as any of William Blake's. Like Sleepers Albion is an "anti-novel," a novel of "the fragmented self," in the words of Anais Nin, "all the voices of the subconscious speaking simultaneously." (Cited in Smith, p. 94) It would be ludicrous to speak of plot in any prose fiction of Patchen, yet certain structural devices do help to create a sense of shapeliness in, say
