Marguerite Duras
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Marguerite Donnadieu April 4 March 3 ), better known as Marguerite Duras , was a writer. She was born in Indochina and went to France , her parents' native country, to study law, but became a writer instead. She is the author of a great many novels , plays, films and short narratives, including her best-selling, ostensibly autobiographical work L'Amant ), translated into English as The Lover . Following the making of a film of the same name(s) based on her work, Duras then published a slightly different work, L'Amant de la Chine du Nord . Other major works include Moderato Cantabile , also made into a film of the same name, Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein and her film India Song Duras's early novels were fairly conventional in form (their 'romanticism' was criticised by fellow writer Raymond Queneau ); however, with Moderato Cantabile she became more experimental, paring down her texts to give ever-increasing importance to what was not said. Her films are also experimental in form, most eschewing synch sound, using voice over to allude to, rather than tell, a story over images whose relation to what is said may be more-or-less tangential.

The unspeakable, she said...
The writer Marguerite Duras died in Paris, on March 3, 1996. Throughout her life and to her dying breath, this astonishing woman never ceased to ascend the steps of national and international fame. Undoubtedly, she owed her success to her obstinacy to be and remain herself, come what may and at whatever cost to her own person.
ne day, I was already old, in the entrance of a public place, a man came up to me. He introduced himself and said: "I've known you for years. Everyone says you were beautiful when you were young, but I want to tell you I think you're more beautiful now than then. Rather than your face as a young woman, I prefer your face as it is now. Ravaged." Those are the opening lines of The Lover, the novel which, in 1984, brought Marguerite Duras not only the Goncourt, France's most famous literary award, but also a print run of almost three million copies, translations into some forty languages and an enormous world-wide success, magnified by the film subsequently directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Hers was, indeed, an astonishing face, as astonishing as her life story, from the young woman's sensual and disturbing elegance during the years between the wars to the sarcastic pout and reptilian gaze of the sacred contemporary monster, with provocative eyes glaring from behind her thick glasses. "Between eighteen and twenty five,"

After relatively traditional novels and stories, Duras published in 1958 the novel MODERATO CANTABILE, which first summarized her themes of sexual desire, love, death, and memory. However, Duras did not publish a manifesto of her ideas like so many representatives of the noveau roman did, but her final work, ECRITE (1995, Writing), gave a brief account of her life and theory of writing. "The solitude of writing is a solitude without which writing could not be produced, or would crumble, drained bloodless by the search for something else to write. When it loses its blood, its author stops recognizing it. And first and foremost it must be never be dictated to a secretary, however capable she may be, nor ever given to a publisher to read at that stage." (from Writing , trans. by Mark Polizzotti, 1998)
