Duncan, Robert (1919-1988) Robert Duncan wrote a remarkable series of poems that deal directly with the love of men for other men. Duncan was born in Oakland, California, on January 7, 1919, to Edward and Marguerite Duncan. His mother died giving birth, and his father could not manage a small baby by himself while raising Robert's older brothers and sisters. At the age of seven months, Robert was adopted by Edwin and Minnehaha Symmes, who lived in Alameda, California, and belonged to a group called the Hermetic Brotherhood, an offshoot of Theosophy. Sponsor Message.
An accident at the age of three left him with double vision. By the time he was eighteen, attending the University of California at Berkeley, he was in a relationship with a man. Adoption, double vision, hermetic philosophy, and homosexuality: these were the early forces that shaped Duncan's poetic practice. After college, Duncan moved to New York City to begin his career as a writer. In August 1944, he published "The Homosexual in Society" in Dwight Macdonald's magazine

International Documentary Television Corporation is a privately owned Canadian television production company specialising in full length network documentary programming.
We have been providing television programming at a network level for over 25 years.
Our client list includes CTV CBC NFB GLOBAL TELEVISION ... PBS and HBO
We are based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
We often get requests for an explanation of the word "documentary" and how it differs from news reporting.
The word was coined by John Grierson, founding commissioner of the National Film Board of Canada.
He defined it as: "the creative treatment of reality".. so imagine you were "covering" a fire for a television news station the fire is underway and you cover it as a news event. Later you discover that it was set by a mentally disturbed man who was once described as a genius. You decide to investigate that man's life and try to understand and then explain, in your own terms with your own viewpoint, why he set the fire.
Now you are no longer covering news but you are on your way to a documentary.

Robert Duncan's Life and Career Paul Christensen D uncan, Robert Edward (7 Jan. 1919-3 Feb. 1988), poet, was born Edward Howard Duncan in Oakland, California, the son of Edward Howard Duncan, a day laborer, and Marguerite Pearl Carpenter, who died at childbirth. His father could not afford to keep him, and he was adopted in August 1919 by Edwin Joseph Symmes, an architect, and Minnehaha Harris, who renamed him Robert Edward Symmes. After a psychiatric discharge from the army in 1941, the poet made a composite of his previous names to form the present one. Duncan's foster parents were devout Theosophists and chose their adopted son after consulting horoscopes and astrological charts relating to his birth; he was told he was descended from a line after the destruction of Atlantis and was fated to witness a second death of civilization by fire and holocaust. Duncan grew up in an atmosphere of seances, meetings of the Hermetic Brotherhood, and a library of occult literature. His childhood dreams were carefully interpreted by his parents; following an accident on the snow at age three he was cross-eyed and saw double, a fact that seemed to confirm the "double vision" of his parents' world. The twinning of objects in his sight later entered his poetry as a motif of the dual realities of sight and imagination. As he wrote in Roots and Branches , "I

In The Beginning
The many classic buildings posted around Liverpool can be deceptive, for Liverpool isn't really an old city. As an urban environment it is roughly about 300 years old. A small child in comparison to other more established cities. In the late 17th century the city began to grow. The principal reason being the fact that the river Dee began to silt up. Chester and Parkgate no longer remained the main ports that the Navy used and instead turned to the River Mersey. This is when Liverpool's phenomenal growth began. The origin of Liverpool's place name has been a debate that has continued to frustrate the most patient of men, the most popular theory is that it came from the 'Liver' or red colour which was produced by reflection of the red Cheshire sandstone bed-rock through the water, before industrial pollution made it one of the most polluted water-ways in Europe. Throughout the 1840's a stream of Irish refugees arrived in Liverpool fleeing from the potato famine caused by blight. The stream soon became a flood. The population of Liverpool expanded rapidly in the nineteenth century from 77,653 in 1801 to 375,955 in 1851 due to the large numbers of people who came hoping to find employment. Liverpool's poor housing led to a high death rate. By 1840 Liverpool had the worst annual rates in the country with around 36 deaths per thousand of the population.

In the very heart of Liverpool's newly regenerated Queen Square area, Doctor Duncan's has been designed by Robert Cain's Brewery of Liverpool to reflect the style of a traditional Victorian ale house. Dressed with authentic original fixtures and fittings, some of which have been salvaged from other pubs and carefully restored, the pub aims to bring back the good "old fashioned" drinking and eating house to Liverpool. The Pub is dedicated to the life of Doctor Duncan , a famous figure in the history of Liverpool, and one of it's favourite sons. But who was he? Born in Seel Street in 1805, he was the third son of a Liverpool merchant and he went on to graduate as a doctor of medicine at Edinburgh in 1829, before returning to his home town to begin his career as a general practitioner. He was an unrelenting campaigner against the poor living conditions of his patients, which he believed accounted for the high mortality rate amongst them. As a result of his work he was appointed as the first Chief Medical Officer of Health - the first appointment of its kind in the entire country. His work led to the passing of the Liverpool Sanitary Act in 1846, which helped to eliminate Cholera, a dirt related disease and which doubtlessly saved many lives. He will always be triumphed as Liverpool's public health hero. (See

Add to a Notebook Robert Duncan Born in 1919 in Oakland, California, Robert Duncan began writing poetry as a teenager in Bakersfield, when a high school teacher encouraged his creative endeavors. In 1938, after two years at University of California, Berkeley, Duncan moved to New York and became involved in the downtown literary coterie that had sprung up around Anais Nin. In New York Duncan took an active role in emerging arts movements, following the works of the Abstract Expressionists, the development of Picasso's brand of modernism, and the emergence of an American Surrealism as seen in the works of his acquaintances Roberto Matta and Hans Hoffman. During this time, Duncan launched the Experimental Review Kenneth Patchen , Lawrence Durrell, and other writers in their circle. In 1946 Duncan returned to Berkeley, where the poetry scene was developing into what would soon be called the San Francisco Renaissance: Jack Spicer and Robin Blaser were together devising their concept of a "serial form" for poems linked by repeating themes, images, and phrases, while Kenneth Rexroth was holding his literary and anarchist meetings, which Duncan, Blaser, and a host of others attended. In 1947 Duncan met Charles Olson, founder of Black Mountain College, and over the years that followed the two developed a relationship rooted in their literary interests. Olson introduced Duncan to
