Add to a Notebook Robert Duncan Born in 1919 in Oakland, California, Robert Duncan began writing poetry as a teenager in Bakersfield, when a high school teacher encouraged his creative endeavors. In 1938, after two years at University of California, Berkeley, Duncan moved to New York and became involved in the downtown literary coterie that had sprung up around Anais Nin. In New York Duncan took an active role in emerging arts movements, following the works of the Abstract Expressionists, the development of Picasso's brand of modernism, and the emergence of an American Surrealism as seen in the works of his acquaintances Roberto Matta and Hans Hoffman. During this time, Duncan launched the Experimental Review Kenneth Patchen , Lawrence Durrell, and other writers in their circle. In 1946 Duncan returned to Berkeley, where the poetry scene was developing into what would soon be called the San Francisco Renaissance: Jack Spicer and Robin Blaser were together devising their concept of a "serial form" for poems linked by repeating themes, images, and phrases, while Kenneth Rexroth was holding his literary and anarchist meetings, which Duncan, Blaser, and a host of others attended. In 1947 Duncan met Charles Olson, founder of Black Mountain College, and over the years that followed the two developed a relationship rooted in their literary interests. Olson introduced Duncan to

Duncan's life during the 1930s and 40s was among the first public prototypes of the homosexual writer in America. He struggled to achieve artistic expression while preserving his sexual identity. Cameo appearances are made by other writers of the period including Nin, Henry Miller, Rexroth, Pound and others. Robert Duncan Biography by Patricia Layman Bazezon, Academy of American Poets

Christopher Duncan Robert Baker (1945-2004)
My father died peacefully in his sleep just before four o'clock this afternoon, surrounded by his family. He was the best of men: kind without limit, unstintingly generous, unfailingly brave, slow to anger, quick to forgive, unbelievably hard-working, entirely without vices, truly good and decent. I've never known anyone else like him, and feel lucky beyond my power to express that he was my father. He was someone who touched everyone and made their lives better (even a doctor who'd only treated him the last few days was in tears this afternoon). His last thoughts and wishes were not of himself, but of his family and friends. He told us all not to waste time mourning his passing. I'm going to try to honour this by holding myself not to the standards to which he held others, but to the standards of utmost excellence that he not only expected of himself but so effortlessly met. I hope that I will one day be even half the man he was. Rich , January 07, 2004

    `MAGNETARS', SOFT GAMMA REPEATERS
Robert C. Duncan, University of Texas at Austin duncan@astro.as.utexas.edu
Abstract Soft gamma repeaters ("SGRs") are X-ray stars that emit bright, repeating flashes of soft (i.e. low-energy) gamma rays. The physical nature of these stars was a mystery for many years. In 1992, it was proposed that SGRs are magnetically-powered neutron stars, or magnetars. Subsequent observational studies lent support to this hypothesis. Astronomers now think that all emissions detected from SGRs and from a related class of stars known as anomalous X-ray pulsars ("AXPs") are powered by magnetic field decay. Here I will explain how these strange, physically-extreme stars form, and why they emit steadily pulsating X-rays with sporadic, bright outbursts. I will also tell the story of their discovery and of the theoretical efforts which helped to reveal their bizarre nature.
NOTE: this website was originally written in May 1998, in response to a surge of interest in magnetars. In early 2003 I updated the site, to answer questions raised by readers of a Scientific American cover story on magnetars.

Trevor Duncan (b. 1924) Trevor Duncan (real name Leonard Charles Trebilco) was born in Camberwell, London, England, on 27th February 1924. I visited him at his Somerset home in April 1994 to discuss these new recordings of some of his best works, and he explained to me that his skills as a composer were almost totally self-taught. By the age of twelve he could play by ear, but two years later he wanted to learn to read music and study a technical analysis of what he was doing by instinct. He gained this knowledge at Streatham Library where he found books by academics, and full scores to examine. For a year he attended the Trinity College of Music for an external course on violin, harmony and counterpoint. Although the violin study helped him later in scoring for strings, he was very disappointed by the other aspects of the course. Like many of his contemporaries working in the same musical spheres, he was to discover that practical experience would ultimately prove to be the best tutor. When he reached eighteen, Duncan joined the British Broadcasting Corporation assisting in radio plays by doing sound effects and playing discs of incidental music. This was to be short-lived, because he was conscripted into the Royal Air Force in 1943 where he became a wireless operator. He saw active service in Stirling aircraft with 38 Group (glider tugs and supply drops), and in his spare time he played in various RAF station dance-bands. His war service included eighteen months in India, before he was discharged from the RAF in 1947.
