TRAPPED! CAGES OF MIND AND BODY
Trapped! Cages of Mind and Body ; Edited by Lois Duncan.
I've reviewed so many short story collections in the last year that I wasn't sure I would have much to say about this one. Then I figured, What the heck? I'll just say the same things all over again. But after reading this book, I decided that it deserved more. It is a unique and excellent book that, for once, actually deals with the topic at hand. In an enormous number of ways, Lois Duncan, the editor of the collection, and all of the book's contributors make a hard-hitting point about teenagers "trapped" in life. At this point, were I truly worried about repeating opinions from an earlier review, I would sum up this paragraph by saying that the author and editor accomplished what they set out to do, and leave it at that. But what kind of reviewer would that make me?
Even the poetry, which is from Duncan's own childhood collection does not disappoint. It carries a strong message to the reader. *Every* story carries an important message. They are all their own distinct story, and each writer does an amzing job of simply writing a great story. Every page of the book is interesting, and every page has the ability to make a real difference in a teenager's life. The book as a whole sends a strong message of hope. Every teenager needs the hope that they will no longer be trapped in the future. And Rob Thomas wrote a story for the book as well... how could that be a bad thing?

Lois Duncan provides readers a window to a world that houses many different individuals - the strong, the weak, the kind, the evil, the fortunate, the underpriveleged, the arrogant, the submissive, the caring, and the indifferent. Duncan's novels allow readers to examine themselves, their circumstances and their world. Whether accepting responsibility for the death of an English teacher or admitting to their responsibility for a hit and run accident, Duncan's characters face a universal truth - your actions are important and you are responsible for them. Duncan started writing as a child, submitting writing for publication when she was 10 and had her first story accepted at 13. At 20, she wrote her first young adult novel. Now a resident of Albuqurque, New Mexico, Lois Duncan has published more than 40 books.

The book was very well written with good descriptions of the characters. The book made me want the teacher to keep reading it. Lois Duncan is a very good author and she makes excellent books and stories. When I heard about the looks and actions of the characters I could visualize the looks of them and what they were doing in each scene. When my teacher told me about the book about the authors daughter and her murder I felt really sad and I wanted to read that book as well. I really liked the book and I want to own it myself. It was the best book I have ever read. recommend this review to a friend

Adolescent literature is aimed primarily at readers who fall between the ages of 12 and 20. In most cases, the plot involves a situation in which the protagonist has to confront a problem and quite possibly formulate a solution. Lois Duncan, best selling author of I Know What You Did Last Summer, has won high acclaim for her books for young people and adults. She is well-known for incorporating mystery and suspense in her books, while providing a moral in her stories. Among her most popular stories for young people are Don't Look Behind Killing Mr. Griffin, Ransom, and The Third Eye. Gallows Hill Gallows Hill is a story that discloses many issues that are relevant to adolescents. Unfortunately, divorce is a fairly common phenomenon today. Sarah Zoltanne, as well as Kyra Thompson, must learn to settle their differences when they learn that Sarah's mother is marrying Kyra's father. Another issue raised in Duncan's book is gaining acceptance from one's peers. Sarah is an outcast even before she is deemed a witch simply because she is not from Pine Crest. Many teens have to deal with rejection from their peers, much like adults. Finally, Duncan addresses the issue of autonomy in

History of the Volunteer State Book Award The Volunteer State Book Award is sponsored annually by the Tennessee Library Association in cooperation with the Tennessee Association of School Librarians. Each year, children are asked to read books from a list of nominated titles. In the Spring, those students who have read or listened to at least three of the titles from the list are eligible to vote for their favorite. These votes are tabulated and sent to the state organization. The book with the most votes statewide wins the award. The author of the book receives a plaque and is invited to Tennessee to receive the award. From 1978-1988, this award was named the Tennessee Children's Choice Book Award and was made available only to students in grades four through six. The first winner was Thomas Rockwell for How to Eat Fried Worms . In 1988, the award was expanded to include all grade levels and four awards were announced: for grades K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Finally, in 1992, the structure was modified to reflect what it is today: three awards, one for primary grades, one for intermediate grades, and one for young adult (YA) readers.
