Home Ancient Theatre Medieval Theatre 16th Century ... Email Us ALEXANDRE DUMAS THE YOUNGER (1824-1895) A T the beginning of the last quarter of the nineteenth century three men, Augier , Dumas the younger, and Victorien Sardou were considered the leaders of dramatic activity in France. The influence of Strindberg and Ibsen , never at any time so powerful in France as elsewhere in Europe, had not yet even begun to make itself felt. Alexandre Dumas, son of the exuberant creator of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers , was the author of a dozen or more important plays which had appeared between 1850 and 1875. , a dramatization of a novel by the young Dumas, had to wait three years for a stage performance, which was finally obtained in 1852. Its immediate success, not only in France but in other parts of Europe and in America, was one more indication that the theater-going public was eager to sentimentalize over the sorrows of the professional light sister. Hugo 's Marion Delorme had been one of the earliest presentations of this class, as Nana, Zaza, Marguerite Gautier and others were among the later types.

Dumas, Alexandre u E s] Pronunciation Key Dumas, Alexandre, known as Dumas fils (1852, tr. 1856), known in English as Camille, was a sensation. It was based on a partly autobiographical novel of the same title, which he had published in 1848. Portraying a love affair of a courtesan, the play became the vehicle of many famous actresses, and it was the basis of Verdi's opera La Traviata. Another successful play, Le Demi-Monde (1855, tr. 1858), aroused much discussion because of its portrayal of the disreputable world of French society. In later plays Dumas preached a revolt against romantic morality, the excesses of the wealthy, and bourgeois puritanism and propounded social and psychological questions. His stage works are notable for skillful construction, though the characterizations are somewhat lacking in vitality. His novels include Tristan le Roux (1850) and Diane de Lys (1853). Among his best plays are also

Dumas, Alexandre u Pronunciation Key Dumas, Alexandre , known as [per] Henri III et sa cour Christine Antony (1831), and La Tour de Nesle (1832), notable for its evocation of the Middle Ages. After a number of novels, written independently or in collaboration, he produced his great triumphs, The Three Musketeers Twenty Years After (1845, tr. 1846) and The Vicomte de Bragelonne The Count of Monte Cristo (1845, tr. 1846), which in its dramatic version was made famous by James O'Neill. Although these historical novels and their successors, written with the aid of numerous collaborators, especially Auguste Maquet, are scorned by critics, who find them lacking in style and characterization, they have had enormous popularity and have been translated into nearly every language. Among his other works are Queen Margot (1845, tr. 1845)

Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)
» Victor Hugo

document.write(''); The life and resurrection of Alexandre Dumas
The grandson of a Haitian slave, he became the most famous author in France; now, his rousing Romantic novels are enjoying renewed popularity
The action-packed novels of 19th-century French author Alexandre Dumas continue to intrigue millions of readers around the world, 150 years after their creation. The stories have been translated into almost a hundred languages, and the most famous, The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo , have inspired more than 100 of the 200 films based on Dumas's works. Few people know, however, that the author was the grandson of a Haitian slave, or that Dumas's mulatto father rose rapidly through the ranks of the French Army to become a legendary general by the age of 31. Though the general died young, leaving his son without an inheritance, Dumas overcame poverty, the lack of formal education, and the constant wear and tear of 19th-century racism to become one of the world's most popular writers. By the time Dumas was 35, he had laid the foundations of bourgeois drama, helped stage a Romantic revolution in theater, and helped create a new kind of Romantic novel. Dumas's life sometimes seemed as action-packed as his novels; he participated in three revolutions, courted countless women and dueled when his honor was insulted. Luckily for his fans, the lavish chateau he built outside Paris, always open to starving artists, the families of mistresses, and even strangers, has recently been restored and opened to the public.
