Alexandre Dumas La Chasse et l'amour (The Chase and Love, 1825). But it was not until 1827, after attending a British performance of Hamlet, that Dumas discovered a direction for his dramas. "For the first time in the theater I was seeing true passions motivating men and women of flesh and blood," he recalled. "From this time on, but only then, did I have an idea of what the theater could be." Dumas achieved instant fame on February 11, 1829, with the triumphant opening of Henri III et sa cour Antony (1831) and La Tour de Nesle Impressions de voyage: En Suisse Around 1840 Dumas embarked upon a series of historical romances inspired by both his love of French history and the novels of Sir Walter Scott. In collaboration with Auguste Maquet, he serialized Le Chevalier d'Harmental in the newspaper in 1842. Part history, intrigue, adventure, and romance, it is widely regarded as the first of Dumas's great novels. The two subsequently worked together on a steady stream of books, most of which were published serially in Parisian tabloids and eagerly read by the public. He is best known for the celebrated d'Artagnan trilogy: Les trois mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers, 1844)

Search all of Alexandre Dumas Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was one of the most famous French writers of the 19th century. Dumas is best known for historical adventure novels like The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo , both written within the space of two years, 1844-45, and which belong to the foundation works of popular culture. He was among the first, along with Honoré de Balzac and Eugène Sue, who fully used the possibilities of roman feuilleton, the serial novel. Dumas is credited with revitalizing the historical novel in France, although his abilities as a writer were under dispute from the beginning. Dumas' works are fast-paced adventure tales that blend history and fiction, but on the other hand, the are entangled, melodramatic, and actually not faithful to the historical facts.
Alexandre Dumas was born in Villes-Cotterêts. His grandfather was a French nobleman, who had settled in Santo Domingo (now part of Haiti); his paternal grandmother, Marie-Cessette, was an Afro-Caribbean, who had been a black slave in the French colony (now part of Haiti). Dumas's father was a general in Napoleon's army, who had fallen out of favor. After his death in 1806 the family lived in poverty. Dumas worked as a notary's clerk and went in 1823 to Paris to find work. Due to his elegant handwriting he secured a position with the Duc d'Orléans later King Louis Philippe. He also found his place in theater and as a publisher of some obscure magazines. An illegitimate son called Alexandre Dumas fils, whose mother, Marie-Catherine Labay, was a dressmaker, was born in 1824.

The grandson of a Haitian slave, he became the most famous author in France; now, his rousing Romantic novels are enjoying renewed popularity
The action-packed novels of 19th-century French author Alexandre Dumas continue to intrigue millions of readers around the world, 150 years after their creation. The stories have been translated into almost a hundred languages, and the most famous, The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo , have inspired more than 100 of the 200 films based on Dumas's works. Few people know, however, that the author was the grandson of a Haitian slave, or that Dumas's mulatto father rose rapidly through the ranks of the French Army to become a legendary general by the age of 31. Though the general died young, leaving his son without an inheritance, Dumas overcame poverty, the lack of formal education, and the constant wear and tear of 19th-century racism to become one of the world's most popular writers. By the time Dumas was 35, he had laid the foundations of bourgeois drama, helped stage a Romantic revolution in theater, and helped create a new kind of Romantic novel. Dumas's life sometimes seemed as action-packed as his novels; he participated in three revolutions, courted countless women and dueled when his honor was insulted. Luckily for his fans, the lavish chateau he built outside Paris, always open to starving artists, the families of mistresses, and even strangers, has recently been restored and opened to the public.

    Early Life
Alexandre Dumas is usually designated père to distinguish him from his father and son of the same name. The son, known as fils, was also an important writer of drama and of fiction. Dumas’ father was an impoverished, disillusioned general in Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. His prowess and exploits were models for the character Porthos and for many incidents in Dumas’ works. Dumas was born in the village of Villers-Cotterêts on July 24, 1802, the grandson of a Haitian slave.
    Life’s Work
Though Dumas had published fiction earlier and drama later, the real shift to fiction came in 1842, with the publication of his first great historical novel, Le Chevalier d’Harmental (1842; English translation, 1856). The following years saw the publication of his most popular, though not regarded as his best, novels, Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844; The Three Musketeers, 1846), Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (1844-1845; The Count of Monte-Cristo, 1846), and La Tulipe Noire (1850; The Black Tulip, 1851).

Alexandre Dumas
Alexandre Dumas is one of the greatest writers of his time. Alexandre Dumas was born on July 24, 1802, in Villers-Cotterêts, France. Few people know that Alexandre was a grandson of a Haitian slave who was also the illegitimate son of Marie Louise-Elizabeth Labouret and Thomas-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, a general in Napoleon's army. His father died when Alexandre was four, in 1806, leaving the family in financial trouble. Although he did not have much money and had limited schooling, Alexandre had a happy childhood. In 1818, Alexandre's mother informed him that they had no money and that he had to find a job. Alexandre accepted a clerking position for the Duke of Orléans in Paris, where he worked as a clerk. After he met a famous French actor, Talma, and decided to become a play writer. Alexandre wrote his first play, Napoléon Bonapart, in 1825. His most popular novels are the musketeers trilogy, which includes The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Another well-known novels were The Count of Monte Cristo, Ten Years Late, and The Black Tulip. Alexandre fathered two illegitimate children of two different mothers. His son, Alexandre Dumas Junior was born on July 27, 1824 and his daughter, Marie Dumas, was born on March 5, 1831. On February 1, 1840, Alexandre married a woman whom he divorced six years later. By 1843 Alexandre wrote fifteen plays. Historical novels brought him an enormous fortune, but he spent money faster than he earned it.

The Three Musketeers

Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)
As a playwright Dumas made his breakthrough with HENRI III ET SA COUR (1829), produced by the Comedie Francaise. It gained a huge success and Dumas went on to write additional plays, of which LA TOUR DE NESLE (1832, The Tower of Nesle) is considered the greatest masterpiece of French melodrama. He wrote constantly, producing a steady stream of plays, novels, and short stories.
Dumas' role in the development of the historical novel owes much to a coincidence. The lifting of press censorship in the 1830s gave rise to a rapid spread of newspapers. Editors began to lure readers by entertaining serial novels. Everybody read them, the aristocracy, and the bourgeoisie, young and old, men and women. Dumas' first true serial novel was LE CAPITAINE PAUL (1838, Captain Paul), a quick rewrite of a play.
