Richard III (1483-5 AD)
Richard III, the eleventh child of Richard, Duke of York, and Cecily Neville, was born in 1452. He was created third Duke of Gloucester at the coronation of his brother, Edward IV. Richard had three children: one each of an illegitimate son and daughter, and one son by his first wife, Anne Neville, widow of Henry IV's son Edward. Richard's reign gained an importance out of proportion to its length. He was the last of the Plantagenet dynasty, which had ruled England since 1154; he was the last English king to die on the battlefield; his death in 1485 is generally accepted between the medieval and modern ages in England; and he is credited with the responsibility for several murders: Henry VI , Henry's son Edward, his brother Clarence, and his nephews Edward and Richard. Richard's power was immense, and upon the death of Edward IV

Patty Duke, Stuck in Walter Reed's Waiting Room

By Richard Leiby
Thursday, April 1, 2004; Page C03 Patty Duke has been most everywhere, but this week she couldn't get into Walter Reed Army Medical Center to see the troops. "I have fans and I have a clean record. I want to know why we were bumped," the Oscar-winning actress told us Tuesday night during dinner at Cafe Milano, where celebs gathered after a Creative Coalition gala. "I'm very curious about what happened." We are too. As part of Arts Advocacy Day, the coalition planned to send more than a dozen entertainers to visit soldiers Tuesday. But the USO abruptly nixed the plans, leaving Duke and others waiting at their hotel for an explanation. So what happened? "In this case, a number of celebrities had dropped out," USO spokeswoman Elaine Rogers told us yesterday, saying any late changes to the list caused a problem. "You know, that's just now how we do things. . . . We need to tell the soldiers who's coming to visit them." She added: "But, God, I'd love to work with Patty Duke in the future."

News Release May 18, 2000 DUKE ENERGY NAMES RICHARD J. OSBORNE CHIEF RISK OFFICER TO LEAD NEW STRATEGIC FUNCTION CHARLOTTE, N.C. Duke Energy has named Richard J. Osborne its first chief risk officer (CRO), reflecting the increasing strategic importance of risk management in the rapidly changing energy marketplace. In announcing creation of the position, Duke Energy Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Richard B. Priory noted that the company's rapid growth and globalization make effective risk management critical. "With about half of our revenues now derived from commodity positions, we are seeing how integral effective risk management is to our company’s success," Priory said. "Over the past several years, we have worked hard to build our risk management acumen, discipline and skills, and we have successfully elevated corporate risk management to a source of competitive advantage." Osborne has been executive vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) of Duke Energy since the company was formed in June 1997. His selection as executive vice president and CRO recognizes the leadership he has provided in developing Duke Energy’s risk management program and practices, Priory said. The CRO will join the seven other top leadership positions on Duke Energy's Policy Committee. Osborne joined Duke Power Company in 1975 as a financial analyst. He was named vice president and chief financial officer of Duke Power in 1991.

Kings of England
Richard I.,
Henry II. , Sept. 3rd, l189. He had previously taken the cross, and now resolved to fulfil his vow in the fields of Palestine for which object he raised money by the sale of the crown property and offices, and a great number of English barons joined in the enterprise. In 1190 Richard joined the Crusade with Philip Augustus of France; and 100,000 of their bravest subjects met together on the plains of Vezelai. The two royal crusaders proceeded by separate routes to Sicily. There they quarrelled, but were reconciled by means of a large money payment by Richard. After some months' stay in Sicily, they again set forward; Richard on the way making himself master of Cyprus, and giving it to Guy of Lusignan.
Richard II.,
King of England, was son of Edward the Black Prince, by his wife, Joan, called ' The Fair Maid of Kent,' and was born at Bordeaux, in February, 1366 or 1367 (there seems to be some confusion here which may be due to the old date/new date problem -CH 2002). his father died in 1376, and he was created Prince of Wales ; succeeding his grandfather, Edward III.,

Edwin Austin Abbey. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, and the Lady Anne
Oil on canvas, 52.5 x 104.25 inches. Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven. This scene occurs in Richard III , Act I, scene ii, when Richard, who has played a part in the deaths of Edward, Prince of Wales, and his father, Henry VI, admits, "What though I killed her husband and father," woos Anne, who is taking the body of her father-in-law Henry VI to his burial in Chertsey, in the very presence of the king's corpse. The painting was accompanied in the Royal Academy catalogue for 1896 with these lines from Richard's final passage in the scene: "Was ever woman in this humor wooed? / Was ever woman in this humor won?" Abbey, for the purposes of the composition of this large canvas and his customary grand style, departs from Shakespeare's text; whereas the scene in the play occurs after Richard has ordered the bearers to set down the hearse, Abbey sets the whole scene in motion, with Anne quite obviously attempting to escape Richard's attention. The scene as Shakespeare describes it is much closer to this realization by John Gilbert in an illustration for Howard Staunton's The Works of Shakespeare (1867), a volume which, according to Lucy Oakley (43), Abbey owned. Gilbert's picture is reproduced on the right.
