DUKE RICHARD THE GOOD.
"Then would he sing achievements high
And circumstance of chivalry." - Scott.**
Richard the Fearless had several sons, and when he lay dying his nobles asked him to say who should be his successor. "He who bears my name," whispered the old duke, and added a moment later: "Let the others take the oaths of fealty, acknowledge Richard as their superior; and put their hands in his, and receive from him those lands which I will name to you." So Richard the Good came to his dukedom, with a rich inheritance in every way from the father who had reigned so successfully, and his brothers Geoffry, Mauger, William, and Robert, accepted their portions of the dukedom, to which Richard added more lands of his own accord. During this reign there were many changes, some very gradual and natural ones, for Normandy was growing more French and less Scandinavian all the time, and the relationship grew stronger and stronger between vigorous young Normandy and troubled, failing England. Later we shall see how our Normans gave a new impulse to England, but already there are signs and forebodings of what must come to pass in the days of Richard the Good's grandson, William the Conqueror. Yet we can guess at a great deal about the condition of Normandy. There was so much going to and fro, such a lively commerce and transportation of goods, that we know the old Roman roads had been kept in good repair, and that many others must have been built as the population increased. The famous fairs which were held make us certain that there was a large business carried on, and besides the maintenance and constant use of a large army, in some years there was also a thrifty devotion to mercantile matters and agriculture. Foreign artisans and manufacturers were welcomed to the Norman provinces, and soon formed busy communities like the Flemish craftsmen, weavers and leather-makers, at Falaise. The Normans had an instinctive liking for pomp and splendor; so their tradesmen flourished, and their houses became more and more elegant, and must be carved and gilded like the dragon ships.

Conclusion Years had passed away. The oaths of Louis, and promises of Lothaire, had been broken; and Arnulf of Flanders, the murderer of Duke William, had incited them to repeated and treacherous inroads on Normandy; so that Richard's life, from fourteen to five or six-and- twenty, had been one long war in defence of his country. But it had been a glorious war for him, and his gallant deeds had well earned for him the title of "Richard the Fearless"a name well deserved; for there was but one thing he feared, and that was, to do wrong. By and by, success and peace came; and then Arnulf of Flanders, finding open force would not destroy him, three times made attempts to assassinate him, like his father, by treachery. But all these had failed; and now Richard had enjoyed many years of peace and honour, whilst his enemies had vanished from his sight. King Louis was killed by a fall from his horse; Lothaire died in early youth, and in him ended the degenerate line of Charlemagne; Hugh Capet, the son of Richard's old friend, Hugh the White, was on the throne of France, his sure ally and brother-in-law, looking to him for advice and aid in all his undertakings.

In an interview with ZDNet Germany, Caldera chief Ransom Love hits back at free software founder Richard Stallman, denying that he is a 'greedy capitalist' or a 'parasite.' "I am not a greedy capitalist. I am only a businessman. I just do my job. I'm not quite sure whether you can call this parasitic. I am not a parasite," Caldera chief executive Ransom Love told ZDNet in Munich, Germany over the weekend. Love was defending himself and the open source movement against reproaches by Richard Stallman, the chairman of the Free Software Foundation. Back in May, Stallman was quoted as saying of Love: "He's only a parasite." But according to Love, Richard Stallman's point of view is "very... narrow" and it is wrong to call the business model of companies such as Caldera parasitic.
"You can't call our business model parasitic," said Love. "We add value to Linux, so it can become successful. We integrate Linux in the Back Office. And we do all the marketing that's necessary. Did Richard Stallman ever invest £50m in Linux? We did. I have been involved in the Linux community since my time at Novell in 1994. With 'Lizard' we developed the first installation service for Linux ever." Lizard Unattended Install was released in 1999.

The major goal of our lab is to understand the biological basis of learning. We believe that a comprehensive understanding of the relevant mechanisms for learning will require relating discrete synaptic processes to behavior, ultimately in the awake animal. To this end, we focus on a constellation of interconnected brain nuclei in the songbird that acquire, produce, and maintain its learned vocalizations. The wealth of behavioral data characterizing birdsong learning coupled with the discrete anatomical nature of the song circuitry make songbirds an ideal organism in which to study the cellular mechanisms of learning and memory. Song learning in birds shares many features with speech learning in humans, including developmental restriction to an early "critical period." During the critical period, the juvenile bird listens to and copies the song of a tutor; after the critical period closes, such copying apparently is impossible. One major goal of our lab is to understand the neuronal regulation of the critical period for song learning, in part because it could yield important insights into the relatively prodigious learning power of the juvenile brain.

    Richard Bach
    By: Marci Woodward
In spite of being criticized for sharing simple philosophies on life, love, and reincarnation in Jonathan Livingston Seagull and The Bridge Across Forever , new age American author, Richard Bach, inspires and encourages readers to appreciate life, never give up, and discover one's true potential. Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a simple book about a seagull who loves to fly and wants to reach perfection in flight. Readers, however, enjoy this book because of the deeper inspirational meanings found within the pages. Unlike the other seagulls that simply fly for food and survival, Jonathan loves to fly and spends all his time trying to reach the fastest speed and turning mid-flight while performing these feats. Many of us find similarities to Jonathan in that we dont always "fit in" with what everyone else does. Few of us, though, have the courage he has to defy the accepted ways and strive for what we feel is right for us. One day while Jonathan is flying he reaches terminal velocity in a vertical dive, but loses control while trying to change direction and flies straight through the flock. He then flies off and tries again. After many tries he is able to control himself! He begins flying back to the flock full of excitement and thinking, "We can lift ourselves of ignorance, we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence and intelligence and skill. We can learn to be free! We can learn to fly!" (Bach 30). We can use his example in our lives. Persistence leads to perfection.

A gifted writer and student of languages, Tom studied classics, French, German and English literature when he entered the University of Virginia in 1870. He was awarded the Thomas Jefferson Prize for the best essay in 1872 and then turned his attention to the study of law in 1873-74. It is likely that he later read law for a time in his father's office before passing the bar. Although the practice of law became his career, Duke wrote prose and poetry the rest of his life and was published in the New York Herald and such magazines as Century, Lippincott's, and Illustrated American.

A search in the "archives" results in a "new recording" from blues shouter Jimmy Witherspoon.
Jimmy Witherspoon returns to Toronto as part of the 11th du Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival . He will be re-united with Junior Mance , who recorded with him back in 1969 on a CD that has just been issued on Stony Plain. Spoon plays the Royal Bank Pavillion There's a great deal of blues at this year's du Maurier Downtown Jazz: a quick list has Fathead and Robin Banks followed by Lucky Peterson and Downchild on Friday, June 20, Howard Armstrong , the last surviving member of the famous Stringband that same night, a double bill of Stephen Barry with Van 'Piano Man' Walls and Georgette Fry, Lou Rawls for 2 shows, and... Jimmy Witherspoon Richard Flohil provides this insight into his new/old Stony Plain CD. Holger Petersen 's friendship with Jimmy Witherspoon began in what might appear, at first glance, to be an unlikely setting the 1994 Edmonton Folk Festival. And the friendship says something about the head of the Stony Plain record company, his long time involvement with the blues, and the ease with which he operates in the different worlds of roots musicfolk, country, bluegrass and blues. In fact, the friendship with Witherspoon stems, in turn, from another friendship Petersen cemented with another musician at another folk festival this one with guitarist
