Daphne du Maurier Website BIO In many ways the life of DAPHNE du MAURIER resembles that of a fairy tale. Born into a family with a rich artistic and historical background, the daughter of a famous actor-manager, she was indulged as a child and grew up enjoying enormous freedom from financial and parental restraint. She spent her youth sailing boats, travelling on the Continent with friends, and writing stories. A prestigious publishing house accepted her first novel when she was in her early twenties, and its publication brought her not only fame but the attentions of a handsome soldier, Major (later Lieutenant-General Sir) Frederick Browning, who married her.
Her subsequent novels became bestsellers, earning her enormous wealth and fame. While Alfred Hitchcock's film based upon her novel proceeded to make her one of the best-known authors in the world, she enjoyed the life of a fairy princess in a mansion in Cornwall called Menabilly, which served as the model for Manderley in Rebecca. She died in 1989.

Daphne du Maurier was born in London in 1907, the second daughter of Muriel and Gerald du Maurier. Born into a talented, theatrical and artistic family, she was blessed with a vivid imagination and a desire to write. This desire was nurtured further by her immediate love for Cornwall, after her parents purchased a holiday home at Bodinnick near Fowey on the coast. It was whilst staying there, at the house, re-named Ferryside, she wrote her first novel The Loving Spirit (published in 1931). A story set in the fictitious town of Plyn, it was woven around the lives of a local Cornish boat builders and their history. In 1932 Daphne du Maurier married Major-General Sir Frederick Browning and in 1943 they moved to Cornwall with their three children. She went on to become one of the most successful authors of all time. Her most famous works include Rebecca Frenchman's Creek My Cousin Rachel and of course Jamaica Inn.

By JONATHAN YARDLEY
Tuesday, March 16, 2004; Page C01 An occasional series in which The Post's book critic reconsiders notable and/or neglected books from the past. Almost from its inception in 18th-century England, the gothic novel has been adored by readers and deplored by critics. For the fastidious ladies and gentlemen of the quarterly reviews and academe, its central conventions nature red in tooth and claw; haunted castles atop windswept moors; defenseless young women at the mercy of strange, obsessed men with terrible secrets; bondage, imprisonment, sexual torment and ambiguity, raging fires are simply too too . But readers love it, as well they should, for in the best gothic fiction, realism and romance join forces to create a territory somewhere between this world and some other in which almost everything is slightly, deliciously over the top. Gothic fiction has produced oceans of stuff that can't be credited with much more than entertainment value, stuff that usually ends up in airport bookshops and on bestseller lists. Think Stephen King. But gothic fiction also has produced a few of the indisputable masterpieces of the English language, from Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" to Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre" to William Faulkner's "Absalom! Absalom!" as well as a number of works that rise well above mere entertainment but don't quite make it all the way to the sacred halls of literature.

Nina Auerbach examines both the life of Daphne du Maurier as it is revealed in her writings and the sensibility of a vanished class and a time now gone that haunts the fringes of our own age. "Fascinating, profoundly intelligent, and stunningly well written."Signs

Personal Takes
Add to shopping cart "Auerbach is . . . here, as everywhere, a pleasure to read, as she rescues du Maurier from her Rebecca fate, giving her her due, and indicating one of the ways in which women, disliking the assigned female role, learn to live with it and vindicate their sense of deprivation in writing."Carolyn G. Heilbrun "In the bright light of Auerbach's book, all sorts of unsuspected hauntings and legacies become visible."Lorna Scott Fox, London Review of Books
"A fascinating portrait of du Maurier's career as family chronicler, avid researcher and frank anatomist of familial cruelty."Catherine Saint Louis, New York Times Book Review "An engaging blend of autobiography and critical appraisal."Robert Taylor, Boston Globe "Outrageous and winsomely fresh."Emily Gordon, Newsday
