Daphne Du Maurier and Fowey
Daphne Du Maurier first came to Fowey in her early twenties and immediately fell in love not just with the town but the whole of Cornwall. For many years she lived at Ferryside, , the house her parents bought in 1926 on the Bodinnick side of the River overlooking the Ferry Crossing, where she spent so many happy early years and where she wrote The Loving Spirit, published in 1931. The house is private so please respect the Owners right to privacy.

Though best seen from the Air the V ditches, some still over 8 feet in height, are clearly visible when viewed from the ground. Believed to be, according to Arthurian Legend the site of the Castle of the Cornish King Mark. and thus associated also with the Legend of Tristram and Iseult. Also site of a battle in the Civil War. In Daphne du Maurier's The House on the Strand the central character Dick Young finds himself transported back to the 14th Century where he witnesses the life in Tywardreath Manor. Book Description
With the wit and intelligence, Nina Auerbach examines the writer of depth and recklessness now largely known only as the author of Rebecca. Auerbach's Daphne du Maurier is the author of sixteen other novels, along with biographies, articles, plays, memoirs, and short stories. Where other readers have become absorbed by Rebecca, Auerbach finds greater fascination in novels such as The Scapegoat, The House on the Strand, and My Cousin Rachel, books whose protagonists are troubled, even murderous, men succumbing to the haunting of previous generations. Du Maurier herself was haunted by her father, Gerald, creator of the role of Captain Hook in Peter Pan, and grandfather, George, the popular illustrator and best-selling novelist of Trilby. Daphne du Maurier was the torchbearer of a stellar male line. Her own phrase for her secret self, "the boy in the box," hints at her sexual ambivalence and her alienation from the prescribed roles for women of her day.

A voracious reader, she was from an early age fascinated by imaginary worlds and even created a male alter ego for herself. Educated at home with her sisters and later in Paris, she began writing short stories and articles in 1928, and in 1931 her first novel, The Loving Spirit , was published. A biography of her father and three other novels followed, but it was the novel Rebecca that launched her into the literary stratosphere and made her one of the most popular authors of her day. In 1932, du Maurier married Major Frederick Browning, with whom she had three children. Her grandfather was artist and author George du Maurier ( Peter Ibbetson in 1891 and Trilby in 1894). As a child, Daphne enjoyed reading and indulging in games of fantasy, which helped develop her literary talents.
She lived in Cornwall throughout most of her life, first in her parents' summer home near Plymouth and later in Menabilly, a nearby seventeenth-century estate. The gothic landscape of Cornwall, the setting for the legends of King Arthur, Tristan and Iseult, and many pirate tales, inspired her work and often became the landscape of her own fiction, most notably in her...
