ClassicNote on Sister Carrie
About the Author

Theodore Dreiser was born on August 27, 1871 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Part of a large German-American family, and the ninth of ten children, his childhood was marked by poverty. His father, John Paul, had previously been a cotton mill manager, but a series of unfortunate accidents caused his fortunes to dwindle. In 1864 the cotton mill burned down, and during the reconstruction John Paul was hit in the head with a beam. He never fully recovered and as a result become deeply religious. He further was soon cheated by his business partners. The family was forced to move from one Indiana town to another in order to survive. Theodore Dreiser later resented his father for the family¹s poverty. At the age of fifteen Dreiser moved to Chicago and held jobs washing dishes, clerking a hardware store, and tracing freight cars. Dreiser fortunately was able to escape when a former teacher offered to send him to Indiana University at Bloomington for a year. He soon became interested in journalism, but returned to Chicago and worked as a bill collector, real estate clerk and laundry-truck driver. Dreiser first entered the newspaper world by dispensing toys for the needy at Christmas for the Chicago Herald . He subsequently got hired as a cub reporter with the Chicago Globe and later went to St. Louis as a feature writer for the

The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914: Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945)
Index The 1925 work An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser, like London's Martin Eden Despite his awkward style, Dreiser, in An American Tragedy, displays crushing authority. Its precise details build up an overwhelming sense of tragic inevitability. The novel is a scathing portrait of the American success myth gone sour, but it is also a universal story about the stresses of urbanization, modernization, and alienation. Within it roam the romantic and dangerous fantasies of the dispossessed. An American Tragedy is a reflection of the dissatisfaction, envy, and despair that afflicted many poor and working people in America's competitive, success-driven society. As American industrial power soared, the glittering lives of the wealthy in newspapers and photographs sharply contrasted with the drab lives of ordinary farmers and city workers. The media fanned rising expectations and unreasonable desires. Such problems, common to modernizing nations, gave rise to muckraking journalism penetrating investigative reporting that documented social problems and provided an important impetus to social reform. Biography of Theodore Dreiser
A biography of the life of american author Theodore Dreiser, including his early life as part of a poverty-stricken family.
For a while, Dreiser drifted from job to job; he worked as a driver for a laundry, in a real estate office, and as a collector for a furniture store. He began his writing career by working for the St. Louis Globe Democrat. He also worked for newspapers in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and New York, where he finally settled in 1894. He was a voracious reader and was influenced by the writings of Poe, Hawthorne, Balzac, Freud and philosopher, Herbert Spencer. He eventually came to view people as helpless victims of indifferent natural forces. In 1898 he married Sara White, a school teacher from Missouri, however, Dreiser found it very difficult to remain faithful to one woman. He had numerous affairs, sometimes several at once. During these years he earned a living as an editor for several magazines for women. bodyOffer(23555) His early writings include Sister Carrie, which was published in 1900. This was the story of a young unmarried woman who lived with two successive men, but was not corrupted by the experience. The book was extremely controversial due to its immoral nature. The publishers refused to market it. However, after his second book, Jennie Gerhardt, was favorably received in 1911, Sister Carrie was reissued. This was the beginning of Dreiser's successful writing career. His later writings include his most commercially successful novel, An American Tradegy (1925) which was twice adapted into film, in 1931 and 1951. In this famous story he showed that the real criminal was not Clyde Griffiths, the killer, but the slum environment in which he grew up. He also wrote an autobiography, A Book About Myself, later re-titled Newspaper Days, which was published in 1922, and Dawn, published in 1931.

Dreiser, Theodore [dr I u u r] Pronunciation Key Dreiser, Theodore His first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), the story of a country girl's rise to material success first as the mistress of a wealthy man and then as an actress, horrified its publisher, who gave it only limited circulation. Dreiser distributed it himself, but it was consistently attacked as immoral; it was reissued in 1982 with many passages from his revised typescript restored. Jennie Gerhardt In The Financier (1912), he turned his attention more specifically to American social and economic institutions. This novel, the first of a trilogy that includes The Titan (1914) and The Stoic (1947), describes the rise to power of a ruthless industrialist. In both The Genius (1915) and in The Bulwark (1946), Dreiser explores the failings of an American artist.
