Theodor Geisel
also known as
Dr. Seuss A Short Biography Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss was born in Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. When he was young, he liked to draw all the time. After he finished high school he went to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. He graduated in 1925 and then went to a different school in England. He wanted to be a Professor. After he finished school, Theodor Geisel returned to America and found a job in advertising. In his spare time he started to write children’s books. His first book was an illustrated alphabet book. He was excited about his book, but no one would publish it. After this first attempt at writing, he did not try to write another book for many years.
In 1936, Geisel decided to take a trip. This trip inspired him to write his first book: AND TO THINK I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET. He sent it to 43 different publishers but none of them wanted to publish it. Finally, in 1937, he got a friend to publish it for him. This was the first time he used his pen name, Dr. Seuss (Seuss was his mother's maiden name).
In 1954, a magazine wrote that some children were having trouble learning to read because the books they had were boring. Mr. Geisel did not want books to be boring for kids but he did want kids to read. So he wrote a book using only 220 different words. He called it The Cat in the Hat. That book was very popular! Theodor Geisel went on to write and illustrate an entire series of books just for beginning readers.
