(and a few other Dr. Seuss favorites) I like to use these lessons around Dr. Seuss' birthday which is March 2 and, if possible, spread the activities out over more than a week. Students love the rhyme and imaginative creatures that Dr. Seuss shares in his stories! The Cat in the Hat
Prior Knowledge: Discuss with students activities that they like to participate in on a rainy day. What types of feelings do they sometimes have on a rainy day? Introduce the Story: Introduce title, author and illustrator; Read aloud for enjoyment Comprehension : Discuss the feelings expressed by the characters in the story. Do they seem to like the Cat in the Hat's tricks? Ask students to describe how they would have felt. Discuss what things the Cat in the Hat did in the house that might have made their mom upset. Brainstorm ideas for what the characters in the story should have done when the Cat in the Hat entered their home without permission and how the children could have made the Cat in the Hat leave. (This is a good opportunity to discuss safety rules for when you are home alone.) Ask students if they think the boy and girl told their mother about the Cat in the Hat and to explain their answer. "A person's a person, no matter how small!" Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, would say. "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted." Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped kids learn to read. Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts , in 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford University, he began a career in advertising. His advertising cartoons, featuring "Quick, Henry, the Flit!," appeared in leading American magazines. His first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street , hit the market in 1937, and the world of children's literature was changed forever! In 1957, Seuss's The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House's best-selling series - Beginner Books. This popular series combines engaging stories with outrageous illustrations and playful sounds to teach basic reading skills. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and three Academy Awards, Seuss was the author and illustrator of 44 childrens books, some of which have been made into audiocassettes, animated television specials, and videos for children of all ages. Even after his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss continues to be the best-selling author of children's books in the world.

    Introduction
A long time ago (around 1994 or so) I went looking for information about Dr. Seuss on the net. I was expecting to find a lot; after all, he seemed like a natural subject for people to create pages about. I didn't find any. So, in a fit of despair, disappointment and desperation, I set about creating one. I gathered together a few parodies I found on the net, copied in all the entries from the current Books in Print did a couple of searches in the Internet Movie Database, and put it all in one place. This inspired people to do two things. 1) Send me email thanking me for having this page, and 2) Inspired them to create their own Dr. Seuss pages, having seen how empty mine were. Move to 1997. There are a number of Dr. Seuss sites out there. Some good, some bad, some official, some not. Mine still seems to be the only one with parodies on it, but y'know, that's not saying much these days. So, in a fit of frustration, and after-work energy, I go about re-vamping the pages.

LESSON PLANS FOR DR. SEUSS WEEK These plans are developed to be used in a second grade class. They will be used during the month of March when the school is preparing to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day. The standard that is being addressed is: Demonstrate competence in the general skills and strategies of the reading process. To meet the benchmarks, second grade students will know basic sight words, demonstrate comprehension of simple stories, and demonstrate knowledge of story elements. This will also meet the criteria of balanced literacyreading to with and by students. This will be a week long activity that will cross several curricular areas. The teacher will do the initial reading to the class of several of Dr. Seuss books. Class discussion will ensue, the internet will be used, and graphing and word problem work will occur during math lessons. The beginning of the second week will be the celebration school wide of Dr. Seuss's birthday. All of the books that the teacher has read to the students or any Dr. Seuss books that she is not using as part of this plan will be available for the children to read during seat work time. Day 1. Teacher will initiate a discussion of Dr. Seuss. As a class the children will complete a KWLW chart with the students on what they know about Dr. Seuss. Discussion will continue with what books of Seuss's that they are familiar with and take a straw poll of their favorite book. The teacher will then read And to Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street. For seat work/computer time that day students will work in pairs (high ability reader with lower ability readers) to answer the questions on the scavenger hunt. The teacher will have the computer opened to the internet site http://www.randomhouse.com/seussville. See attachment for scavenger hunt.
