THE RING OF THOTH
by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Cornhill Magazine
The most fickle of wooers, however, is apt to be caught at last, and so it was with John Vansittart Smith. The more he burrowed his way into Egyptology the more impressed he became by the vast field which it opened to the inquirer, and by the extreme importance of a subject which promised to throw a light upon the first germs of human civilisation and the origin of the greater part of our arts and sciences. So struck was Mr. Smith that he straightway married an Egyptological young lady who had written upon the sixth dynasty, and having thus secured a sound base of operations he set himself to collect materials for a work which should unite the research of Lepsius and the ingenuity of Champollion. The preparation of his magnum opus entailed many hurried visits to the magnificent Egyptian collections of the Louvre, upon the last of which, no longer ago than the middle of last October, he became involved in a most strange and noteworthy adventure. The trains had been slow and the Channel had been rough, so that the student arrived in Paris in a somewhat befogged and feverish condition. On reaching the Hotel de France, in the Rue Laffitte, he had thrown himself upon a sofa for a couple of hours, but finding that he was unable to sleep, he determined, in spite of his fatigue, to make his way to the Louvre, settle the point which he had come to decide, and take the evening train back to Dieppe. Having come to his conclusion, he donned his greatcoat, for it was a raw rainy day, and made his way across the Boulevard des Italiens and down the Avenue de l'Opera. Once in the Louvre he was on familiar ground, and he speedily made his way to the collection of papyri which it was his intention to consult.

104. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: A Who2 Profile
SIR arthur conan doyle • Author. doyle resources, The arthur conan doyle Society A bit stuffy, but with a sturdy basic biography.
http://www.who2.com/sirarthurconandoyle.html
SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE Author Doyle was born in Scotland and studied medicine there, eventually serving as a physician in the Boer War (1899-1902). But his fame rests on his creation of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes . Doyle published his first Holmes tale, A Study in Scarlet , in 1887. Over the following 40 years he published 56 short stories and four novels featuring Holmes and his sidekick, Dr. Watson . Late in life Doyle became closely interested in mysticism and wrote the 1926 book A History of Spiritualism
Extra credit : Doyle was knighted in 1903 for his services to the crown, including his authorship of the 1902 pamphlet The War in South Africa ... Doyle and Dr. Watson have much in common: both are medical doctors, both are writers, and both served in the British Army... According to his New York Times obituary, Doyle was married to the former Louise Hawkins from 1885 until her death in 1906. He was married again to the former Jean Leckie from 1907 until his own death in 1930. Doyle had two children with his first wife, three with his second.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was institutionalised. He died in an asylum in 1893. Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Doyle was educated in Jesuit schools and later studied at Edinburgh University, qualifying as a doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine until 1891, when he became a full time writer. Creativity was apparent in Doyle's ancestry: his grandfather was a famous caricaturist and his uncle was a well-known illustrator. Doyle's father was an architect, designer and book illustrator. Doyle himself was an admirer of Edgar Allan Poe and Emile Gaboriau.

From the New York Times: The Curious Incident of the Boxes
For 25 years the cardboard boxes, more than a dozen of them, sat in a corner of a London office, gathering dust while lawyers argued about whom they belonged to and scholars dreamed about what was inside. But the auction this Wednesday of their contents, once belonging to Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, has provoked another fight and a mystery almost worthy of Holmes himself.
They also say that the material is too important to be sold off piecemeal. "This will make it impossible for one academic or team of researchers ever to access the entire collection for a definitive biography of Conan Doyle," Kevin Pringle, a spokesman for Alex Salmond, a member of Parliament from the Scottish National Party, said of the auction. "The material will be scattered to the four winds." Adding to the sense of unease is the mysterious death of Richard Lancelyn Green, a leading Conan Doyle scholar and private collector, and a vociferous opponent of the sale. On March 27 Mr. Lancelyn Green, 50, a former chairman of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London and the author of several well-received books on Conan Doyle, was found garroted to death, strangled by a shoelace wrapped around a wooden kitchen spoon used to tighten its grip. History
This webring, originally founded by David Rohrman aka Professor Moriarty, was passed onto Rick Freeman aka Fred Porlock at Yoxley Old Place when David graduated from his college and could no longer keep his website nor his ring. It has now passed onto me, as Porlock did not want to maintain two separate webrings on the same subject indefinitely. I, Cress , aka Miss Roylott in Sherlockian circles, shall do my best to maintain the ring to the satisfaction of the members. Here is a quotation about the original Moriarty, our ring's namesake: For years past I have continually been conscious ... of some deep organized power which forever stands in the way of the law... For years I have endeavoured to break through the veil which shrouded it, and at last the time came when I seized my thread and followed it until it led me after a thousand cunning windings to Professor Moriarty... He is the Napoleon of crime, Watson... He is a genious, a philosopher, an abstract thinker... He sits motionless, like a spider in the centre of its web, but that web has a thousand radiations, and he knows well every quiver of each of them.

Although Conan Doyle continued to write Sherlock Holmes stories throughout his last decade, many agreed with T. S. Eliot that the unstumpable hero showed evidence of "mental decay"; many others thought that Conan Doyle, the nation's most beloved rationalist, had himself gone "stark, staring mad on the subject of the dead." The Spirits of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Throughout his life Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote prolifically and in almost all genres, but by his last decade spiritualism had become his almost exclusive passion endless pamphlets and letters, seven books, and lectures on most continents.
