Clue Chronicles Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied to be a doctor at the University of Edinburgh and set up a small practice at Southsea in Hampshire during his 20s. While the practice proved largely unsuccessful, the lack of patients provided him with the opportunity to create possibly the most popular character ever introduced in the history of fiction, Sherlock Holmes. While at University, Conan Doyle had been greatly influenced by John Bell, one of his professors. Bell was an expert in the use of deductive reasoning to diagnose disease. Conan Doyle was so impressed that he used these same principles when creating his famous detective. Sherlock Holmes was introduced in A Study in Scarlet (1887), followed by

Elementary, My Dear Reader: How to Become a Sherlockian
All you really need for starting out as a Sherlockian is this: you must be a dyed-in-the-wool mystery buff. Most mystery fans are avid readers, but others are television and movie watchers. Many are both. Sleeping and eating are secondary pursuits to us if we fall in the latter category. Sherlock Holmes isn't the only Greatc Detective to have readers rally round him ( The Dorothy L Sayers Society exists for the purpose of assuring the immortality of Lord Peter Wimsey and his author), but he is the one who has acquired the largest number of organizations, books, collectors of memorabilia, and the like.
No matter what mysteries you begin reading or watching, you'll eventually HAVE to read the Canon (the collected Sherlock Holmes works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle); just as all roads lead to Rome, so do all other literary detectives lead us straight to Holmes. Any library or bookstore will have Doyle's stories of Holmes on the shelves; they are a staple of detective and of post-Victorian literature. If you find yourself bitten by the more severe strain of Sherlockian bug (no doubt the cause of Tapanuli fever, or perhaps the black Formosa eruption), there are many more books, websites, and television shows and videos to pursue.
You may want to join a scion society of the Baker Street Irregulars. The BSI is the oldest and most prestigious of the Sherlockian organizations in the United States (the Sherlock Holmes Society of London is its English counterpart); many famous Sherlockians, such as Isaac Asimov, have been members. Scion societies are local organizations which meet on a regular basis to discuss Sherlock Holmes and other weighty matters, usually accompanied by food, drink, and games and puzzles.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
A period of natural convulsions during which a large portion of the human race will perish. Earthquakes of great severity, enormous tidal waves would seem to be the agents. War appears only in the early stages and appears to be a signal for the crisis to follow. The crisis will come in an instant. The destruction and dislocation of civilized life will be beyond belief. There will be a short period of chaos followed by some reconstruction; the total period of upheavals will be roughly three years. The chief centers of disturbance will be the Eastern Mediterranean basin, where not less than five countries will entirely disappear. Also in the Atlantic there will be a rise of land which will be a cause of those waves which will bring about great disasters upon the Americans, the Irish and Western European shore, involving all of the low-lying British coasts. There are indicated further great upheavals in the southern Pacific and in the Japanese region. Mankind can be saved by returning to its spiritual values.

Elementary, my dear reader (or Conan Doyle in Birmingham)

Arthur (later Sir Arthur) Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes Mysteries and more, lived and worked in Aston (now part of Birmingham, but then a separate town) for several months each year, from about Spring 1879 to early 1882. He was 19 at the beginning of that period, taking up a temporary medical assistantship, as a dispensing assistant (what we might call an assistant chemist or pharmacist) while studying at Edinburgh University. His employer and landlord in Birmingham was Dr Hoare, and Doyle developed a close friendship with his family, whom he visited more than once subsequently. Family members (but not Dr Hoare, who had died in 1898) joined such noted guests as J.M. Barrie, Jerome K. Jerome and Bram Stoker at Doyle's wedding at St Margaret's in Westminster in 1907.
Doyle wrote in his "Memories and Adventures" (p 28-9) of 1924 that:
"Hoare was a fine fellow, stout, square, red-faced bushy - whiskered and dark-eyed. His wife was also very kindly and gifted woman, and my position in the house was soon rather that of a son than of an assistant"

    Doyle, Arthur Conan (1859-1930)
Scottish physician and author, best known for his Sherlock Holmes stories, who occasionally wrote fiction about unusual forms of life. In "When the World Screamed" (1929) he envisions the Earth as a gigantic living organism (see planets, as living beings ). The notion of refugia on a dramatic scale is the subject of his novel The Lost World (1912), while "The Horror of the Heights" takes as its (now obsolete) theme the idea of strange organisms inhabiting the upper atmosphere. Napoleonic literary chronology
It has sometimes struck me that some of you, when you have heard me tell these little adventures of mine, may have gone away with the impression that I was conceited. There could not be a greater mistake than this, for I have always observed that really fine soldiers are free from this failing. It is true that I have had to depict myself sometimes as brave, sometimes as full of resource, always as interesting; but, then, it really was so, and I had to take the facts as I found them. It would be an unworthy affectation if I were to pretend that my career has been anything but a fine one. The incident which I will tell you to-night, however, is one which you will understand that only a modest man would describe. After all, when one has attained such a position as mine, one can afford to speak of what an ordinary man might be tempted to conceal. Of the half-million who crossed the Elbe in the autumn of the year '12, about forty thousand infantry were left in the spring of '13. But they were terrible men, these forty thousand; men of iron, eaters of horses, and sleepers in the snow; filled, too, with rage and bitterness against the Russians. They would hold the Elbe until the great army of conscripts, which the Emperor was raising in France, should be ready to help them to cross it once more.
