About the Author
British writer, creator Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of sharp reasoning. Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world. Arthus Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was eventually institutionalized. Charles Altamot died in an asylum in 1893; in the same year Doyle decided to finish permanently the adventures of his master detective. Because of financial problems, Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Dr. Tsukasa Kobayashi has alluded in an article, that Doyle's mother had a long affair with Bryan Charles Waller, a lodger and a student of pathology, who had a deep impact to Conan Doyle.

GENERAL INFORMATION The Arthur Conan Doyle Society was founded in 1989 to bring together those people sharing a common interest in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his works, and to encourage new work and investigation. Whilst the Society has previously published a Journal (one issue remains to be published), the move to a web-based operation means that future articles will generally only be published in electronic form. It is envisaged, however, that traditional publications will appear from time to time. IMPORTANT NOTE

Arthur Conan Doyle, Spiritualism, and Fairies
By Donald E. Simanek Note: many images on this pages are large high resolution files and slow to load. Please be patient until they appear. While many of Arthur Conan Doyle's books are available as e-text on the Internet, and many web sites are devoted to him and his work, there's scant mention of Doyle's credulous acceptance of spiritualism, fairies and other occult ideas. This is a small effort to remedy that omission. "Modern" spiritualism began in the United States in the mid 19th century. Specifically, it arose in Western New York state, a region known to social historians for the religious fervor which made it a spawning ground for many religious sects. They refer to it as the "infected district" or the "burned over district." Spiritualism was born in the fertile religious fervor of immigrant Swedenborgians, Mesmerists, and other religions, a climate of thought receptive to spiritualist ideas. Mainstream religions promised eternal life, but in an era of emerging science which demanded verifiable physical evidence, many religious persons wished for tangible evidence of the claims of relgion, particularly of claims of an afterlife. The fox home was moved to the

Arthur Conan Doyle

The Coming of the Fairies An alternative view of the episode of The Cottingley Fairies by Barbara Roden I
Illustration: Dick Doyle's depiction of the Fairy Queen from In Fairyland] The belief in the existence of fairies, or other 'little folk', however, was one that pre-dated even his first tentative steps along the road to Spiritualism. From his mother, Mary, the young Arthur had heard stories of chivalry and heraldry, and these he credited with having started his interest in things historic, which would lead him to write such novels as Micah Clarke and The White Company
Illustration: The Triumphal March of the Elf King, by Dick Doyle, from In Fairyland] Dick Doyle had always loved folklore and legends, elves, goblins, fairies, and sprites; he wrote in his journal that when he was young, he was kept awake by visions of fairies and gnomes, which he could not stay awake long enough to draw. Even his designs for the cover of Punch , which he first drew in 1844, show swarms of 'little people' in various poses and occupations. By 1849 Doyle was identified by the public with his fairy drawings, and this association was to continue throughout the rest of his career, even when he had turned from book and magazine illustration to gallery paintings. His most famous work
