Rita Dove - 1952 Akron By Mary Cameron Kitchin
Sycamore High School, Cincinnati, Ohio I. Personal and Professional Biography "With the consistently accomplished work of … Rita Dove, there is at least one clear sign if not of a coming renaissance of poetry, then at least of the emergence of an unusually strong new figure who might provide leadership by brilliant example" (Arnold Rampersad qtd. in Bloom 63). Born in Akron, Ohio, in 1952 ("Rita Dove" par. 1), Rita Frances Dove was the second child born to Ray A. Dove and Elvira Elizabeth Hord (Bloom 59). Elvira was a housekeeper, and Ray was the first black chemist at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron (Gates 481). Dove's childhood proved to be relatively stable; her family was "…a first-generation middle-class family" (Dove qtd. in Gates 481). Rita Dove was an ambitious child and a very good student; she was ranked among the top one hundred high school seniors in the nation and was therefore invited to the White House as a "Presidential Scholar." Dove then went on to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She graduated summa cum laude in 1973 and entered Tubingen University in West Germany on a Fulbright scholarship (Bloom 59).

RITA DOVE
b. 1952
Shape the lips to an o , say a . That's island One word of Swedish has changed the whole neighborhood.
When I look up, the yellow house on the corner
is a galleon stranded in flowers. Around it the wind. Even the high roar of a leaf-mulcher
could be the horn blast from a ship
as it skirts the misted shoals. We don't need much more to keep things going.
Families complete themselves
and refuse to budge from the present,
the present extends its glass forehead to sea
(backyard breezes, scattered cardinals) and if, one evening, the house on the corner took off over the marshland, neither I nor my neighbor would be amazed. Sometimes a word is found so right it trembles at the slightest explanation. You start out with one thing, end up with another, and nothing's like it used to be, not even the future. - "The Yellow House on the Corner" Rita Dove Photo credits Click to go to: Biography - Criticism Selected Bibliography Related Links

The Secret Garden
I was ill, lying on my bed of old papers,
when you came with white rabbits in your arms;
and the doves scattered upwards, flying to mothers,
and the snails sighed under their baggage of stone . . .
Now your tongue grows like celery between us;
Because of our love-cries, cabbage darkens in its nest;
the cauliflower thinks of her pale, plump children and turns greenish-white in a light like the ocean's. I was sick, fainting in the smell of teabags, when you came with tomatoes, a good poetry. I am being wooed. I am being conquered by a cliff of limestone that leaves chalk on my breasts. Sunday Greens She wants to hear wine pouring. She wants to taste change. She wants pride to roar through the kitchen till it shines like straw, she wants lean to replace tradition. Ham knocks in the pot, nothing but bones, each with its bracelet of flesh. The house stinks like a zoo in summer

    Rita Dove
    Former Poet Laureate of the United States INTERVIEW
    June 18, 1994
    Las Vegas, Nevada
    When did you first know what you wanted to do? It was a gradual thing. It really wasn't until I was in college. When I was in college, I took creative writing courses and I began to write more and more, and I realized I was scheduling my entire life around my writing courses, and I said, "Well maybe you need to figure out if this is what you want to do." That was the point. I loved to write when I was a child. I wrote, but I always thought it was something that you did as a child, then you put away childish things. I thought it was something I would do for fun. I didn't know writers could be real live people, because I never knew any writers. The first inkling that maybe it was a possible thing happened in my last year of high school. I had a high school teacher who took me to a book-signing by an author, John Ciardi, and that's when I saw my first live author.
    Here was a living, breathing, walking, joking person, who wrote books. video audio And for me, it was that I loved to read but I always thought that the dream was too far away. The person who had written the book was a god, it wasn't a person. To have someone actually in the same room with me, talking, and you realize he gets up and walks his dog the same as everybody else, was a way of saying, "It is possible. You can really walk through that door too." That was the important thing.

Quotations "We tend to be so bombarded with information, and we move so quickly, that there's a tendency to treat everything on the surface level and process things quickly. This is antithetical to the kind of openness and perception you have to have to be receptive to poetry. ... poetry seems to exist in a parallel universe outside daily life in America."
Rita Dove (b. 1952), U.S. poet. As quoted in the New York Times, sect. 4, p. 7 (June 20, 1993). "Billie Holiday's burned voice
had as many shadows as lights,
a mournful candelabra against a sleek piano,
the gardenia her signature under that ruined face.
If you can't be free, be a mystery."
Rita Dove (b. 1952), African American poet and fiction writer. "Canary," lines 1-4 and last line (1989). Billie Holiday (1915-1959) was a great African American jazz singer with a tragic personal life. Comments about Rita Dove There is no comment submitted by members..
