Her father's people were Quakers and pioneers. He, Frank Bryant Stoneman attorney and judge, and went to Florida (circa 1909) before she did. He was founder-editor of The Miami Herald following an earlier paper he had started. When Marjory decided to go south circa 1912, as a result of an unworkable marriage, it was wonderful to find a new country with all the excitement of the tropics, a beginning city and a job on a newspaper. She lived with her father and stepmother, Lilla B. (Shine), who was her first and best friend.
She went overseas in the WW1, doing Red Cross publicity out of Paris and came back after a year to be an associate editor for her father. She marched for suffrage in the 1920s while writing books, magazine articles, drama, fiction and poetry.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center
, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that is located at the northern-most section of Crandon Park and is dedicated to protecting the natural environment. The center structure is located behind a hedge of natural native hedge of plants that help to keep the beach together in times of storm and to provide much needed shade for the trailblazers during the hot summer months.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center
, Inc offers environmental educational programs to private and public school systems and is ideally situated on the Key Biscayne coast just a short walk down the beach to mangroves, sea grasses, naturally formed tree hammocks, and a very rare fossilized rock reef. They are instrumental in the integration of environmental studies classes in the school system yet also stress personal responsibility to what each of us can do to maintain, and in some cases repair our natural environment.
There are also events that are hosted by The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center , Inc such as rotating art exhibits and a program called "3rd Fridays" that are designed to introduce the mission of the center including the ideal of enjoying nature while at the same time "leaving no trace" once you have departed the area.

The Everglades, River of Grass
Marjory Stoneman Douglas
A classic, historically important work on conservation and natural history. In 1915 Marjory Stoneman Douglas moved to Miami, then a town of 5,000 inhabitants. A lifelong advocate of the Everglades, environmentalist and writer, Douglas published this wonderful, prophetic book over 50 years ago. This book (and the dedication of its author) were instrumental in establishing Everglades National Park. View Book Bag

Everglades National Park
Everglades, FL Places Pictures Faces Tips ... Books W e couldn't come to Florida and not stop to see the Everglades. We're so glad we did, and especially glad it was the dry season and the mosquitos were few in number! We got up close to alligators, birds, snakes and snails. Harrison and Amanda loved looking for wildlife and especially enjoyed discovering little baby alligators! Amanda was a great gator spotter, but kept calling them crocs. (We learned that alligators are darker than crocodiles, have broader heads, and enclose their bottom teeth when their mouths are closed. Crocs teeth all stick out.) Really big alligators are a rare sight, but "Notch" (named for his damaged tail) gave us plenty of time to experience his largeness as he lazed on the sidewalk near the Shark Valley Visitor Center. Everglades National Park covers 7 million acres of south Florida, a region less than ten feet above sea level made entirely of limestone. Its proximity to the tropics creates a two-season climate: the wet season (May-November) when 50-60 inches of rain fall each year and hurricanes are common, and the dry season (December-April), when the marsh water levels drop and wildlife are forced to adapt. The natural slow drainage of the Glades into the sea has been interrupted by canals (mostly dug from 1905-60) for urban and agricultural use, threatening the delicate balance that is essential to this wetland ecosystem. We were surprised and saddened to see farming in progress just outside the park boundaries.
