The untiring efforts of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, a writer and environmentalist who fell in love with the Everglades in the early 1900's, were instrumental to protecting the Everglades existence.
As an assistant editor of The Miami Herald, Douglas wrote editorials urging protection of Florida's unique regional character in the face of rapid commercial development. After leaving the paper in 1923, she devoted herself to her literary career, writing extensively about south Florida conservation. In 1947, Douglas published The Everglades: River of Grass as part of The Rivers of America Series. This book, a guide and a natural/political history, not only raised awareness regarding the Everglades but also helped to diminish the national misperception of wetlands as swamps. Still in print, Everglades: River of Grass sells more than 10,000 copies a year.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas pioneering conservationist Born: Birthplace: Minneapolis, Minn. Douglas was raised in New England and attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts. After working with the Red Cross in Europe during World War I, Douglas moved to Florida in 1915. She became a reporter for her father's newspaper, which would later be renamed the Miami Herald. Stoneman began her editorial career by writing light articles for the society pages, but soon changed to writing hard-hitting editorials on then-controversial subjects including women's rights, racial justice, and conservation. As a newspaper columnist she discovered the cause that would consume her for the remainder of her life: preservation of the Florida Everglades. At a time when many people viewed the Everglades as nothing more that a mosquito-filled swamp, Stoneman wrote articles revealing its beauty and portraying the fascinating plants, birds, animals, fish, reptiles, waterways, and other natural wonders of these vast wetlands. She also joined various committees dedicated to ensuring the survival of the Everglades. In 1947, she published a best-selling book called Everglades: River of Grass.

People: Marjory Stoneman Douglas: A Lifelong Passion For Preserving The Environment
By Colby Stong Marjory Stoneman Douglas, an environmentalist who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, was an honored guest at a ceremony last month to dedicate a bronze sculpture by Philadelphia artist Eric Berg at the entrance to the Everglades National Park Royal Palm Visitor's Center in Florida. The life-size statue, which depicts a Florida panther, also honors landscape architect Ernest F. Coe (1886-1951), who conceived the idea of an Everglades national park in 1928. It is estimated that fewer than 50 of the once-plentiful panthers now remain in the state. Douglas has devoted more than 60 years to conservationist causes such as protecting the panther and preserving the Everglades. In 1970, she founded the Friends of the Everglades, a grass-roots organization that she still serves as president. Friends of the Everglades, a group of research scientists, engineers, and concerned citizens, was founded with the goal of fostering coexistence between human and natural environmental systems. The group has helped to block construction of an airport in the marshland, force the closing of two drainage canals, and strengthen restrictions on real estate developers. Douglas got her first look at the Everglades around 1919. Born in 1890 in Minneapolis, she was raised in Massachusetts and graduated from Wellesley College in 1912. Three years later, she moved to Miami and began to work for a newspaper (the News-Record) edited by her father, Frank Stoneman.

    Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness
    Description:
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness now contains a total of 1,296,500 acres and is managed by the National Park Service. All of the wilderness is in the state of Florida. Public land becomes wilderness through legislation passed by the United States Congress in the form of public laws . For the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness, this process began in 1978 when 1,296,500 acres were designated by Public Law 95-625. The following public laws also affect the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness: 105-82. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness is part of the 106 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System. This System of wild lands contributes significantly to the ecological, economic, and social health of our country. Wilderness provides clean air and water, a shelter for endangered species, sacred places for indigenous peoples, a living laboratory for research, and a classroom for exploring personal values while experiencing risk, reward, and self-reliance. In wilderness, you can enjoy challenging recreational activities like hiking, backpacking, climbing, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, horse packing, bird watching, stargazing, and extraordinary opportunities for solitude. In an age of "...increasing population, accompanied by expanding settlement and growing mechanization,"

An Everglades Advocate: Marjory Stoneman Douglas
by Deborah Straw The Everglades in South Florida is one of the most magnificent parcels of land and water in the United States. Thousands of species of birds, reptiles, mammals, insects, fish and flowers inhabit this semi-tropical southernmost tip of the mainland.
Originally more than 4,000 square miles, the Everglades today has shrunk to less than half this size as a result of extensive drainage, over-construction, pollution and fire. In late 1998, a comprehensive restoration plan was launched between the Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District. But if it wasn't for one indefatigable woman - a writer and environmentalist - who fell in love with "this river of grass" almost a century ago, the Everglades might not be in existence at all. Marjory Stoneman Douglas became known during her lifetime, all 108 years of it, as the Everglades' patron saint, primarily because of her 1947 book The Everglades: River of Grass. Since this title emerged, the area has been popularly known as the "River of Grass" although many residents do not even know where the name originated. Also, in 1947, Douglas helped lead the campaign to have the central core of the Everglades preserved as Everglades National Park. In 1969, Douglas spearheaded The Friends of the Everglades, a conservation organization of 5,000 members, a testament to the importance of the Everglades. Membership still costs only $1 a year, and River of Grass is still available in print, selling more than 10,000 copies a year. The biggest honor the physically small woman received during her lifetime was this: In December 1997, a 1.3 million-acre wilderness area in the Everglades was dedicated in her name on the park's 50th anniversary.

Memories of Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Her Everglades Crusade, Foresight, Fall 1998
    BY Nathaniel Pryor Reed, Chairman
Everyone who loves the Everglades recognizes the unique contribution that Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890-1998) made to the continuing effort to enhance the remains of what once was a near perfect jewel of a natural system. I first met the extraordinary Marjory in 1960 on my return to Florida from military service. She was on one of her then frequent forays up the east coast of Florida, spinning her tale of the Everglades as a system. She described the destruction that was being implemented by the Army Corps of Engineers as they proceeded with the congressionally-authorized Central and South Florida Control Plan. The Everglades was being walled in, its boundaries dramatically shrunk. It was being unnaturally drained; its lifeline of fresh, clean water was imperiled. At the time, I felt that Marjory had gone too far. But years later, having served 14 years on the South Florida Water Management District, I am convinced that Marjory was right. Sugar production in Florida has made for incredible wealth among a small group of investors and, in my opinion, is the cause of political influence that is being misused.

She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1912 and moved to Miami in 1915 to be with her father, who was the first editor of the Miami Herald newspaper. In 1915, Miami was a small town. She was struck by its beautiful setting between the warm ocean and the grassy Everglades. For several years, she worked as a reporter for the Miami Herald, but this life was interrupted by World War I. Ms. Marjory Stoneman Douglas volunteered for the U.S. Navy, but the Navy had little experience dealing with women in the service. She then volunteered for the American Red Cross to aid soldiers serving in Europe. When she returned to Florida in 1920 after the war, she said it was because she "belonged there." She resumed her job as a newspaper reporter just as Miami was entering a growth boom that extended from 1920 to 1926. She saw what the boom did to the fragile balance of nature in the Everglades and along the ocean coast. Life-giving wetlands were drained for real estate development. Beautiful coasts were leveled for hotels. Nothing was planned for the future. It was cut, drain, and sell for the highest price. Ms. Douglas wrote articles and delivered speeches on the need for parks, planning, and protection of South Florida's natural features. She cited the value of wilderness and park areas, as well as "real estate." Finally, she quit her newspaper job to write and speak her mind.

Were it not for the decades of work Marjory Stoneman Douglas devoted to the Everglades, it might all be condos now. "Marjory has always been the conscience of the Everglades," said Charles Lee, senior vice president of the Florida Audubon Society. "She saved them." The grand dame of the environmental movement in Florida, Douglas made her reputation as a fighter Ð a cross between Barbara Stanwyck and Eleanor Roosevelt.
