Defender of the Everglades Marjory Stoneman Douglas, born April 7, 1890 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, graduated from Wellesley with straight A's with the elected honor of "Class Orator." That title proved to be prophetic. In 1915, following a brief and calamitous marriage, she arrived in Miami, working for her father at the Miami Herald . She worked first as a society reporter, then as an editorial page columnist, and later established herself as a writer of note. Here she took on the fight for feminism, racial justice, and conservation long before these causes became popular. She was ahead of her time in recognizing her need for independence and solitude, yet never considered herself entirely a feminist, saying: "I'd like to hear less talk about men and women and more talk about citizens." Her book

Week of December 11, 2000
This week President Clinton signed the $8 billion Everglades Restoration Act into law. That made it appropriate for Wellesley College to remember Marjory Stoneman Douglas '12, who spearheaded the effort to save the "River of Grass." Douglas received many awards and tributes for her work. We draw special attention to two. In 1977 she received a Wellesley College Alumnae Achievement Award. And in 1993, at the age of 103, she was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom . Its citation said, "An extraordinary woman who has devoted her long life to protecting the fragile ecosystem of the Everglades, and to the cause of equal rights for all Americans, Marjory Stoneman Douglas personifies passionate commitment. Her crusade to preserve and restore the Everglades has enhanced our Nation's respect for our precious environment, reminding all of us of nature's delicate balance. Grateful Americans honor the "Grandmother of the Glades" by following her splendid example in safeguarding America's beauty and splendor for generations to come." Mrs. Douglas donated her Medal to Freedom to Wellesley College. Douglas was born in 1890 in Minneapolis. After her parents separated, Marjory and her mother lived with her mother's family in Taunton, Massachusetts. Marjory said, "I wanted to go to a good college, and my mind was set on Wellesley. Wellesley was the nearest good college in those days and I chose it even though my good friends were going elsewhere." In her autobiography

She was the leader in trying to preserve "The River of Grass" in its' natural state for all to enjoy. In 1947, she helped lead the successful push to have nearly 1.6 million acres designated as Everglades National Park. She was considered the authority on the delicate ecosystem, which is home to plants and animals found nowhere else.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness Area Year Established: Size: 1,296,500 acres
Description: A river six inches deep and 50 miles wide flows with imperceptible slowness across southern Florida, a "river of grass" forming the heart of the Everglades. From its birth along the shores of Lake Okeechobee, the river drops only 15 feet on its long voyage to saltwater at Florida Bay. Upon the water of this river the life of southern Florida depends. Here you'll find a land of fragile lushness, of the ever-present alligator, of multitudes of colorful birds including flamingoes, roseate spoonbills, egrets and herons, pelicans, cranes and hawks, ibises, storks, frigatebirds, kites and skimmers . . . a land of indescribable wonder. Primarily a marsh of scattered tall grasses covering about 1.4 million acres, Everglades National Park contains only a part of the watery expanse called "everglades." Most of the park has been designated Wilderness, originally named Everglades Wilderness with a name change in 1997. Despite the refreshment its name implies, life in the Everglades hangs by a wet thread, the freshwater required to sustain the vast and varied species being drastically blocked by human intervention. Life in the Everglades comes nowhere near the abundance it once demonstrated. About one-third of the park is comprised of the shallow waters of Florida Bay with its tiny keys. Most of these small islands are nesting sites for birds. The saltwater teems with fish, porpoises, sea turtles, sharks and manatees.

The Miami Herald . Her parents divorced when she was a child, and she was raised by grandparents in Massachusetts.
In the 1930s she championed the foundation of the Fairchild Botanical Garden. She long fought for the Everglades, a campaign that culminated in 1947 with the opening of the Everglades National Park. The same year saw publication of her masterpiece, The Everglades, River of Grass
Like Rudyard Kipling, Douglas had a vivid sense of history, describing arrogant, armoured conquistadores , with crossbows and arquebusses, confronting the fierce but dignified native people of Florida in their feathers and pearls. She recounts the spirited resistance of these same people, and escaped slaves, only 150 years ago, as the government tried to tame and settle the Everglades. And she writes of how the modern world eroded a unique landscape.

arjory Stoneman Douglas was a force to be reckoned with. Called the "mother of the Everglades," she was an environmentalist, activist, feminist, and independent thinker longer than many of us have been around. (She died in 1998 at 108 years old.) Her name is synonymous with the Everglades for her tireless, ground-breaking efforts to protect this watery region - a region her adversaries considered a worthless swamp. Douglas was perhaps most known for her best-selling book, The Everglades: River of Grass. First published in 1947, River of Grass awakened residents and visitors to the notion of the Everglades as a vast, flowing river. Her descriptive, fluid prose portrays the strange beauty of the region and diversity of its wildlife; recounts the history of the native peoples, explorers, and conquerors who traveled here; explains its importance as the region's watershed; and addresses modern civilization's impact on this fragile ecosystem. Douglas lived in South Florida from 1915 until her death and, through the decades, wrote extensively about the region. Twenty years afterpublishing

Marjory Stoneman Douglas: Everglades Champion
Marjory Stoneman Douglas , champion of the Florida Everglades and founder of Florida's environmental movement passed away on May 14th, 1998 at the age of 108. Her lifetime achievements include work as a civil rights activist, a crusader for women's rights, a journalist and playwright, and the first Florida woman in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Her greatest legacy, however, is the profound impact she had on the environment, notably in South Florida. Her book entitled The Everglades: River of Grass published in 1947, served to bring public attention to the Everglades at a time when people looked upon the Everglades as little more than a swamp. The book took five years to research, but as she later wrote, it was "an idea that would consume me for the rest of my life." Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890-1998)

Defender of the Everglades "There are no other Everglades in the world. They are, they have always been, one of the unique regions of the earth; remote, never wholly known. Nothing anywhere else is like them..."
These opening words from Marjory Stoneman Douglas' immortal book "Everglades: River of Grass" crystallize the uniqueness of the Everglades. These words could also be used to describe Marjory herself, who is as rare and unique as the Everglades she has worked so hard to protect. 'Mother of the Everglades' dead at 108
Marjory Stoneman Douglas May 14, 1998 Web posted at: 12:57 p.m. EDT (1657 GMT) MIAMI (CNN) Before World War I began, Marjory Stoneman Douglas began a life-long fight that would keep South Florida at the center of political and environmental controversy for most of this century: the battle to save the Everglades Douglas dedicated her life to urging people to stop thinking of the Everglades as a wasteland to be conquered; to think of the "River of Grass" instead as a paradise to be preserved. The embattled wetland lost its "Mother" early Thursday when Douglas died in her sleep at age 108. Her body will be cremated and her ashes spread over the portion of Everglades National Park that bears her name, said Douglas' attorney and friend, William T. Muir.
"It's not too late or we wouldn't be working. We simply cannot let everything be destroyed. We can't do that, not if we want water. We've got to take care of what we have."
"The years caught up with her," Muir said.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Guardians, Our school continues to perform at the highest level. We have won numerous National, State and local honors, thanks to the dedication of our faculty, the commitment of our students and the support of our parents. In the book, Professional Learning Communities at Work by Richard DuFour and Robert Eaker, “To educate children without a deep partnership of teachers and parents is hopeless. Thirty years of research in education emphasizes that parents and families are the pivotal fact in children learning. The most accurate predictor of a student’s achievement in school is the extent to which that student’s family is able to (1) create a home environment that encourages learning; (2) communicate high, yet reasonable, expectations for their children’s achievement and future careers; and (3) become involved in their children’s education.” This year, we have attempted to improve our communication with parents. The Pinnacle system has been implemented so that parents can view current grades, attendance and homework on a daily basis (douglashigh.com).

Driver’s Ed. to resume By Shari Lesser
Broward County students can now get behind the wheel of an actual car to learn to drive rather than learning virtually. Broward’s New Driver Education Program has been reopened to Broward County high school students.
The program has not been open to high school students since 1995, due to lack of participation and funds. The classes will be held this summer and are open to all Douglas students 15 years or older. The program will be expanding to five Broward County schools during the 2004-2005 school year.
Driver-education class enrollment dropped from 1,860 in 1997 to 291 in 2002, according to an article published in the Miami Herald.
Irving Slosberg, Florida Representative, encouraged officials to reactivate the Driver’s Education program.
Slosberg’s daughter, Dori, 14, died in 1996 because she failed to secure her seat belt in the back seat of a crammed compact car.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Collection
Marjory Stoneman Douglas has campaigned for the preservation and conservation of the Florida Everglades. Her book The Everglades River of Grass , published in 1947, is a landmark volume. Douglas founded the Friends of the Library and has close ties with the Friends of the Everglades, an organization working to promote public awareness and to gain state support toward the preservation of the Everglades. Florida named its Department of Natural Resources Building after Mrs. Douglas. Over the years Douglas has donated a number of materials to the Library including her personal papers. Most of the 19 maps in this collection are of Florida and cover various subjects. Among them are: "The Everglades Conservation Areas," by the South Florida Water Management District, 1977; "Vegetation map of Southern Florida," by John H. Davis Jr., 1943; "Map of Florida," by J. Lee Williams, New York, lithographed by Greene & McGowran, 1837; and "Central and Southern Florida Flood Control Project," 1966 (D.O. file no. 400-24,979).
