AN INTERVIEW WITH MARK DOTY
Author: Hennessy, Christopher
Title: Going to the source: an interview with Mark Doty by Christopher Hennessy.(Interview)
Found In: Lambda Book Report; June-July 2002, v.10, 11, 12(5)
Mark Doty seems to understand the origins of art's power, and his most recent volume of poetry resonates in a new key for this award-wining poet and memoirist with that understanding. In this interview, Doty digs deep into this new work, the aptly titled Source, and offers the stories behind each of his previous volumes. Among topics central to understanding his poetry and his aesthetic project, Doty expounds upon the interconnections of life, art, and observation. Along the way, Doty speaks to his personal influences and origins, weaving a narrative of poems, poets and principles that have been important to his life and work. Doty is the author of five books of poems and three works of nonfiction, Heaven's Coast: A Memoir and Firebird, and most recently StillLife With Oysters and Lemon. Among numerous awards, Doty has won a Lambda Literary Award, a National Book Critics Circle Award, Britain'sT S. Eliot Prize, the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for First Nonfiction, and the Los Angeles Times Book Award, he has been a finalist for theNational Book Award. He lives in New York City. Christopher Hennessy: I feel that your previous volumes each had aunique history to it. Does this latest volume? Mark Doty: The "story" of my books, their autobiographical arc, has been an important aspect of them. I've written a kind of trilogy, really My Alexandria, Atlantis and Sweet Machine which were all concerned, to put it abstractly, with apprehending limit, encountering the fate of the body in time. And with questions of community and memory. To put it more concretely, the shape of these books was determined by the AIDS epidemic, my late partner's illness and death, my own grief, the decision is that the right word for it? to live onward from there. The last of these books begins to move outward, wanting to claim a broad involvement in civic life a sense of the self as one fragile-but-tough survivor in the ongoing pulse of the living.

MARK DOTY ON AMERICA, HOME,
AND THE POET AS SPOKESPERSON
Mark Doty's work has always straddled the line between a sense of belonging and alienation, so it's no surprise to find the crucial question, Where do I live? at the heart of his forthcoming book. In June Graywolf will publish Open House: Writers Redefine Home , Doty's first anthology project. In it, he invites nineteen accomplished writers, including Rafael Campo, Elizabeth McCracken, Honor Moore, and Terry Tempest Williams, to consider the idea of home. The resultant essays form a collective mediation on the many ways in which our surroundings create us, at least as much we create our surroundings. Doty is the author of six books of poems: Source (HarperCollins, 2000)

Posted by Nit Whit on October 20, 192002 at 17:53:17: In his most recent book, SOURCE, poet Mark Doty considers Whitman's place in contemporary America. The poem is at times humerous, and at other times reflective written in the lyrical and conversational style typical in Doty's previous work. Doty enters his story by visiting Whitman's home. "Your house still stands," he tells his predecessor, noting that it's now "dwarfed by the prison / glowering across the street." Such contrasts abound throughout the poem: "We loved the evidence of you / fired by that filtering amber, / even while the swoops of car alarms / decibeled outside..." Interrupted by Jehovah's Witnesses as he writes, Doty comes to a realization that "Our poets fear / the didactic voice, the sweeping claim; we let / the televangelists and door-to-door / preachers talk hope and apocalypse / while we tend more private gardens."

What is American About American Poetry?
Mark Doty
The clearest example of this came one evening when we were talking about American poets, and the conversation turned to the poems of James Wright. I quoted three lines of Wright's I've always loved: Suddenly I realize
That if I stepped out of my body I would break
Into blossom. I was shocked to discover that this passage had been enormously controversial in the U.K.; for my British friends, it represented the height of a brash, American sense of self. How dare Wright make such a claim for his own feelings? How could he have the nerve to be so self-aggrandizing, to assume that he felt some special, important emotion that could be announced in this way, without irony, without apology?
