Doty, Mark Atlantis
Genre Poem (103 pp.) Poems (Sequence) (103 pp.) Keywords AIDS Body Self-Image Caregivers Death and Dying ... Nursing Summary This is a sequence of six poems that form the centerpiece of Doty's book of the same name. The scene is the coast (Provincetown) where the author's companion, Wally, is dying of AIDS: "sometimes / when I put my head to his chest / I can hear the virus humming . . . . " The poet dreams of a dog they don't have. He dreams of saving Wally. Wally tells him of a dream of light and beckoning. Michael dreams of "helping Randy out of bed" and, suddenly, Randy steps out of his body. Among these coastal dreams of caring and dying, Atlantis emerges "from the waters again: our continent, where it always was / . . . unforgettable, / drenched, unchanged." In the end (and before Wally's end), they do get a new dog who "licks Wally's face" and "bathes every / irreplaceable inch / of his head."

For Mark Doty, the poet and author of the new memoir Firebird, the imperfect surface is the touchstone of art November 10, 1999 M ark Doty's new memoir, Firebird, Beauty is integral to Doty's poetry beauty as splendor, shimmer, luster (all characteristic Doty words), and all of it cracked, preferably, or somehow marred. Think flea-market treasures: wine-stained silk opera gloves, or an intricately beaded black scarf, faded and frayed, with half the beads gone. Beneath the finely wrought, descriptive surfaces of Doty's poems are often complicated, difficult histories. "Nothing escapes his gaze and nothing death, devastation, the ghost of a gesture escapes its sheer insistence on beauty," the poet Carol Muske has written. As Firebird makes clear, Doty's interest in the disparity between a shell and its interior is not merely aesthetic; it stretches all the way back to childhood, finding its roots in the experience of growing up gay in 1960s America. At the Gym
This salt-stain spot marks the place where men lay down their heads, back to the bench, and hoist nothing that need be lifted but some burden they've chosen this time: more reps, more weight, the upward shove of it leaving, collectively, this sign of where we've been: shroud-stain, negative flashed onto the vinyl where we push something unyielding skyward, gaining some power at least over flesh, which goads with desire, and terrifies with frailty. Who could say who's added his heat to the nimbus of our intent, here where we make ourselves: something difficult lifted, pressed or curled, Power over beauty, power over power! Though there's something more tender, beneath our vanity, our will to become objects of desire: we sweat the mark of our presence onto the cloth.

There is a familiarity here, in this, Doty's fifth collection of poetry in 11 years. Poems like "Favrile" are reminiscent of earlier poems like "Difference" and "Description" and epitomize Doty's love of words and thoughtful digressions. There is also typical Doty subject matter (fabric, flowers, fog) that links, like a chain of inspiration, book to book. Doty has proved himself capable of lavish vocabulary and technical mastery, but one has a stronger sense in Sweet Machine of his absorption of life's dark, unredeemable underside. Even beauty, Doty's ceaseless redeemer, seems unable, at times, to grace the darkness here, to offer hope, potential, future: "I am forty-one years old / and ready to get down / on my knees to a kitchen bowl / full of live green . . . ." It is this quality that makes the work more real than any of Doty's previous collections. It is not that he has suddenly relinquished his belief in life's beauty or failed to find transcendence, nor has he seen for the first time the ugly side of life; it is that he has weighed them yin/yang-like in a balance of perception and given them their equal due. He has taken on his losses in a Crane-like "it is bitter, but it is mine" fashion and sees salvation as if for the first time, joy and beauty as rare and precious commodities.

Strange Paradise: An Essay on Mark Doty by Tim Dean I My Alexandria (1993), that gained him widespread acclaim and critical recognition. His first two volumes, Turtle, Swan (1987) and Bethlehem in Broad Daylight Turtle, Swan is addressed and whose influence pervades My Alexandria Doty is a gay poet and a poet of the AIDS epidemic. Almost all of the poems in My Alexandria (1996), a powerful philosophical meditation on living in the time of plague. Doty’s originality lies in his making AIDS part of his poetic perspective, rather than treating it simply as an object of contemplation or analysis. Reflecting upon his increased absorption in the epidemic, Doty explains that "AIDS is no longer something I write about, but is part of the way I see or speak." As a result of this alteration in perspective, poems that apparently have nothing to do with AIDS or gay sexuality become infused with a vision that is shaped by the pressure of this form of accelerated mortality.
