Dostoevsky, Fyodor
Russian writer and thinker, one of the world's greatest novelists, whose works dramatize religious, moral, political, and psychological issues.
Early Life
Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow. He was educated at the School of Military Engineering in Saint Petersburg, but abandoned his military career in 1844 to devote himself to literature. His first novel, Bednye liudi (Poor People; also known as Poor Folk), appeared in 1846 and won immediate praise from Russia's most prominent literary critic, Vissarion Belinsky. Structured as a series of letters, the work is both a sentimental novel and a penetrating psychological study of its main character. The book that followed, Dvoinik (1846; The Double), is a startling psychological study of a disintegrating personality, but it was much less popular than Poor People. Over the next three years Dostoyevsky published ten undistinguished short novels and stories that barely rise above the literary conventions of the day.
Dostoyevsky's prison experiences left him with a firsthand knowledge of the criminal mind and of the human potential for evil. His youthful belief in the possibility of creating a good society by applying various social theories was replaced by the conviction that human life must be guided first of all by religious principles.

Mired in poverty, the student Raskolnikov nevertheless thinks well of himself. Of his pawnbroker he takes a different view, and in deciding to do away with her he sets in motion his own tragic downfall. Dostoyevsky's penetrating novel of an intellectual whose moral compass goes haywire, and the detective who hunts him down for his terrible crime, is a stunning psychological portrait, a thriller and a profound meditation on guilt and retribution.

Language Notes

Text: English (translation) Original Language: Russian The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature Novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, published in 1866 as Prestupleniye i nakazaniye. Dostoyevsky's first masterpiece, the novel is a psychological analysis of the poor student Raskolnikov, whose theory that humanitarian ends justify evil means leads him to murder a St. Petersburg pawnbroker. The act produces nightmarish guilt in Raskolnikov. The narrative's feverish, compelling tone follows the twists and turns of Raskolnikov's emotions and elaborates his struggle with his conscience and his mounting sense of horror as he wanders the city's hot, crowded streets. In prison, Raskolnikov comes to the realization that happiness cannot be achieved by a reasoned plan of existence but must be earned by suffering. The novel's status as a masterpiece is chiefly a result of its narrative intensity and its moving depiction of the recovery of a man's diseased spirit.

Many students of literature would state, with certainty, that Fyodor Dostoevsky was one of the first of The Existentialists. As students of philosophy know, this classification is problematic, as Dostoevsky's writings include characters with existential natures, but the writer himself was dedicated to religious mysticism. Also, existentialism should not be interpreted to mean mere depression or obsession with the dark aspects of human nature. Dostoevsky's fascination with the dark side of human will does not make him existential.

Fyodor Dostoevsky
Dostoyevsky grew up in a middle-class family in Moscow. His father, a doctor, was a tyrant toward his family, and his mother was a mild, pious woman who died before Dostoyevsky was sixteen. Partly to escape the oppressive atmosphere of his father's household, the boy acquired a love of reading, especially the works of Nikolai Gogol, E. T. A. Hoffmann, and Honore de Balzac . At his father's insistence, Dostoyevsky trained as an engineer in St. Petersburg. While the youth was at school, his father was murdered by his own serfs at the family's small country estate. Dostoyevsky rarely mentioned his father's murder, but Oedipal themes are recurrent in his work, and Sigmund Freud suggested that the novelist's epilepsy was a manifestation of guilt over his repressed wish for his father's death.
Dostoyevsky graduated from engineering school but chose a literary career. His first published work, a translation of Balzac 's novel Eugenie Grandet , appeared in a St. Petersburg journal in 1844. Two years later, he published his first novel, Bednye lyudi (1846; Poor Folk), a naturalistic tale with a clear social message as well as a delicate description of life's tragic aspects as manifested in everyday existence. The twenty-four-year-old author became an overnight celebrity when Vissarion Belinsky, the most influential critic of the day, praised Dostoyevsky for his social awareness and declared him the literary successor of Gogol. Dostoyevsky joined Belinsky's literary circle but later broke with it when the critic reacted coldly to his subsequent works. Belinsky judged the novel

Biography of Dostoevsky "Life is in ourselves and not in the external," writes Fyodor Dostoevsky in a letter to his brother dated December 22, 1849. "To be a human being among human beings, and remain one forever, no matter what misfortunes befall, not to become depressed, and not to falterthis is what life is, herein lies its task." ( The Brothers Karamazov , translated by Pevear and Volokhonsky, xii) This passage was written immediately after Dostoevsky underwent the traumatic experience that Tsar Nicholas I ordered for several prisoners condemned to death for supporting the expression of free thought within the Russian statea mock execution in Semyonovsky Square, a staged performance so terrifyingly real that it induced insanity within one of the author's fellow prisoners. ( The Brothers Karamazov , translated by Garnett, x) The quote is evidence of Dostoevsky's strength of character; his would be a difficult lifeliving in bleak poverty, he would helplessly watch as many of the people closest to him died from the ailments of the poor. It also exposes the significant flaw common to some of his characters and tragic heroesthrough despair, and weakness before the weight of misfortune, they falter, and commit barbaric acts that render them unfit to operate within the context of humanity. This is the case with both Baklushkin and Shishkov from The House of the Dead , as well as with Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment His sentence was commuted to four years in prison and four years of army service. His prison experiences, as well as his life after prison among the urban poor of Russia, would provide a vivid backdrop for much of his later work. Released from his imprisonment and service by 1858, he began a fourteen-year period of furious writing, in which he published many significant texts. Among these are:

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky ) was a Russian writer and is sometimes referred to as one of the founders of existentialism . Dostoevsky is widely regarded as one of the most important Russian language authors.
Born on October 30 to parents Mikhail and Maria, Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky was the second of seven children. Fyodor's mother died of an illness in
Fyodor and his brother Michael were sent to the Military Engineering Academy at St. Petersburg shortly after their mother's death, though these plans had begun even before she became ill.
It was not long before his father, an army surgeon, also died in . While not known for certain, it is believed that Mikhail Dostoevsky was murdered by his own serfs , who reportedly became enraged during one of Mikhail's drunken fits of violence, restrained him, and poured vodka into his mouth until he drowned.
Dostoevsky was arrested and imprisoned in for engaging in revolutionary activity against Czar Nicholas I . After a mock execution in which he faced a staged firing squad , Dostoevsky was pardoned, and his sentence commuted to a number of years of exile performing hard labor at a prison camp in Siberia . His sentence was completed in , at which point he enrolled in the Siberian Regiment.
