Fyodor Dostoevsky - his life
The Russian writer Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky was born in the Hospital for the poor in Moscow on October 30, 1821. He was to be the second of seven children. His childhood has been described by himself as happy and peaceful where he held particular warm feelings towards his two older siblings Misya and Varenka. Other sources put weight on the despotic father. It is said that the father, a physicist who had retired to his estate in the province of Tula, was murdered by his own serfs in 1839 because of his hot temperedness and irritable state of mind. The mother, on the other hand, is described as tender and sensitive with a literary and musical talent. She died in 1837 when young Fyodor was only fifteen years old. In 1831 Fyodor and his brother Mikhail (1820-1864) were sent to boarding schools in Moscow. After the death of their mother in 1837 they started preparatory school in St. Petersburg. Then, in 1838, Fyodor was admitted to St. Petersburg's Academy of Military Engineers, leaving Misya behind. Our hero graduated in 1843 from the Academy as lieutenant, and was assigned to a military department in St. Petersburg where he worked for a year. Dostoevsky soon realized that working in a department gave no creative satisfaction. He wanted to write and work as an author. His new career started by translating Honore de Balzac's

Reminiscences

It was the end of September, 1866, and Fyodor Dostoevsky was in serious trouble. Desperate for money the prior year, he had made a bad bargain with a rogue publisher. In exchange for an advance on an unwritten novel, Dostoevsky had agreed to give Fyodor Stellovsky the rights to all his future works for a period of ten years if he could not deliver the new book by November 1, 1866. The novel - eventually called The Gambler - was due in thirty days. Dostoevsky had yet to write the first word. GO TO CHAPTER 2 Author: Carole D. Bos, J.D.

"Welcome to the Dostoevsky Research Station , one man's humble part-time attempt to create THE definitive reference site for the study of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881) and his considerable body of work. You may well be thinking, "not another Dostoevsky site!", which is fair enough considering that there are 30+ sites out there already dedicated exclusively to the famous Russian writer (we have links to them all, incidentally). But we're not just another fan site. Online since January 1996 albeit on various webservers and under various monikers , we are not only the fattest with 200 relevant links to other useful spots on the web, we were also the very first.

    Dostoevsky, Fyodor Biography
Fyodor (Mikhaylovich) Dostoevsky (1821-1881) - surname also written Dostoevskii Russian novelist, journalist, short-story writer whose psychological penetration into the human soul had a profound influence on the 20th century novel. Dostoevsky's novels have much autobiographical elements, but ultimately they deal with moral and philosophical questions. He presented interacting characters with contrasting views or ideas about freedom of choice, Socialism, atheisms, good and evil, happiness and so forth. Dostoevsky's central obsession was God, whom his characters constantly search through painful errors and humiliations. "But you're a poet, and I'm a simple mortal, and therefore I will say one must look at things from the simplest, most practical point of view. I, for one, have long since freed myself from all shackles, and even obligations. I only recognize obligations when I see I have something to gain by them. You. of course, can't look at things like that, your legs are in fetters and your taste is morbid. You yearn for the ideal, for virtue. But, my dear friend, I am ready to recognize anything you tell me to, but what shall I do if I know for a fact that at the root of all human virtues lies the most intense egoism?" (Prince Valkovsky in The Insulted and Humiliated Fyodor Dostoevsky was born in Moscow, as the second son of a staff doctor at the Hospital for the Poor - later he acquired an estate and serfs. Dostoevsky was educated at home and at a private school. Shortly after the death of his mother in 1837, he was sent to St. Petersburg, where he entered the Army Engineering College. In 1839 Dostoevsky's father Mikhail Andreevich died, probably of apoplexy, but there was strong rumors that he was murdered by his own serfs in a quarrel. Dostoevsky graduated as a military engineer. With the help of a small income from the estate, he resigned in 1844 his commission to devote himself to writing. His first novel
