History

- Book Reviews, by Dos Passos, John Roderigo
From the Publisher

With 1919, the second volume of his U.S.A. trilogy, John Dos Passos continues his "vigorous and sweeping panorama of twentieth-century America" (Forum), lauded on publication of the first volume not only for its scope, but also for its groundbreaking style. Again, employing a host of experimental devices that would inspire a whole new generation of writers to follow, Dos Passos captures the many textures, flavors, and background noises of modern life with a cinematic touch and unparalleled nerve.1919 opens to find America and the world at war, and Dos Passos's characters, many of whom we met in the first volume, are thrown into the snarl. We follow the daughter of a Chicago minister, a wide-eyed Texas girl, a young poet, a radical Jew, and we glimpse Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, and the Unknown Soldier.

William Blake illustrated his poetry, John Lennon painted and, like the novelist D. H. Lawrence, the writer John Dos Passos sketched and painted. In 1938, Jean-Paul Sartre called Dos Passos "the greatest novelist of our time," and he is still considered one of the major American literary figures of the 20 th century. His was a leading voice among the Lost Generation of revolutionary expatriate writers and artists who fled America to Europe and grappled with social, political and cultural uncertainty in the wake of World War I. Dos Passos arrived on the literary scene in September 1921 with the publication of his antiwar novel, The Three Soldiers . Another novel, Manhattan Transfer , was published in 1925, and the experimental, panoramic trilogy USA The 42 nd Parallel Nineteen Nineteen , and The Big Money ) was a major literary work of the 1930s.

The City in Wartime By JOHN DOS PASSOS I. The West Faces East It was the foggy end of a drizzly day. Along the lunch counter of the Ferry Dock Tavern gray-haired men in overalls and leather jackets were eating oyster stew. A set of hamburgers sizzling on the electric plate sent little wisps of the smell of scorched beef up through the cigarette smoke. From outside, through the loosely slapped together boards of the frame building, came the hoots and howls of steamboat whistles. Through every crevice the fog seeped into the tavern, bringing with it a tang of rotting evergreens and giving faint ruddy halos to the bare electric light bulbs. Against the window-panes and the glass of the door the white fog pressed snugly as flannel. In front of me a stocky black-jowled man in a tightly buttoned pea jacket was addressing a very young blank-faced sailor who sat on the next stool with his blue pancake cap pushed far down on his forehead.

One of Chicago's most famous novelists, John Dos Passos was born here in 1896. He attended Harvard University, graduating in 1916. Like several other well-known writers of his generation, he volunteered in World War I before the US entered the war. The next time the United States went to war, Dos Passos served as a war correspondent for Life Magazine in the Pacific and South America. The observation and writing skills he learned as a reporter came through in his fictional works; in fact, critics have sometimes even faulted him for being too objective. Critics count Dos Passos among America's greatest writers, but many note a decline in the artistic quality of his work over time. While Sinclair Lewis hailed "Manhattan Transfer" as one of the most important novels ever written, works from later in Dos Passos's life have been greeted with less enthusiasm. His most contentious work is the trilogy "USA," a novel of protest with a distinct tone that is difficult to pin down.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
The biographies of U.S.A. are slices of history; their broader contexts are alluded to but not spelled out. To appreciate fully the nuances of Dos Passos's language, the significance of his descriptive details, and the force of his sarcasm, a reader needs to know a lot of history. The Portable Veblen , edited by Max Lerner; the last paragraph alone might suffice.)
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
"The Body of an American" is about the waste of war and the public and official cant that surrounds it. These issues should be of interest to students who have friends or relatives facing military service or who are themselves of draft or enlistment age. "The Bitter Drink" is about what it means to be a serious critic of society, to tell the truth and refuse to say "the essential yes." Students soon to begin careers where they may have to compromise their values should find much to discuss.

By Jill Goetz The Moths and Other Stories , and the novel Under the Feet of Jesus. The Dos Passos prize has been granted annually since 1980 by faculty members in the Department of English, Philosophy and Modern Languages at Longwood College, a liberal arts college in Virginia, to American creative writers in the middle stages of their careers. The prize is named for the influential American author of U.S.A., a massive trilogy published in 1937 that has been called the most important social fiction in spired by the Great Depression. Previous recipients of the Dos Passos prize, which is funded by the Longwood Foundation and includes a cash award of $1,000 and a medal, have included Graham Greene and Tom Wolfe. Viramontes, originally from East Los Angeles, has written extensively on the ex periences of Chicano and Chicana farmworkers in this country. Her first novel, Under the Feet of Jesus ( Dutton, 1995), now available in paperback, was widely hailed for its sensitive portrayal of Estrella, a Mexican-American teen-ager learning about the possibilities of love and the restrictions of life as a migrant worker. "Blends lyricism, harsh realism and a concern for social justice...stunning," wrote one re viewer in Newsweek.

Modern Library Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century (23)

My sympathies lie with the private in the front line against the brass hat; with the hodcarrier against
the strawboss, or the walking delegate for that matter; with the laboratory worker against the
stuffed shirt in a mortarboard; with the criminal against the cop.
-John Dos Passos This is my last review for the Modern Library Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century. I intentionally left this one for last because I've tried reading the trilogy before and, quite honestly, find it one of the most putdownable books on God's green Earth. Dos Passos uses a variety of techniques to try to capture the panoramic sweep of America early in the Century, including inserting short biographies of historical figures like Eugene V. Debs and pasting in actual newspaper headlines. But between these continual interruptions and the sheer number of characters and storylines he pursues, it is a story that becomes horribly segmented and jerks to a halt whenever its building up some momentum. There are some excellent set pieces and some of the interludes are pretty interesting, but the whole work does not really flow to well. Stylistically, it is an experiment that goes awry. However, Dos Passos real importance is not as a stylist. Instead, it is the way in which his career arc tracks that of Western Man over the course of the Century. In many ways he is the American Orwell (see review of

In fifty years, Dos Passos wrote forty-two literary works, and his novels Manhattan Transfer (1925) and the trilogy U.S.A. (published together in 1938) provide a panoramic social history of the first three decades of the twentieth century. Similarly, his paintings addressed the world around him, his friends, and his travels. Included in this exhibition are landscapes from Manhattan, Mexico, and North Africa, portraits of friends and figure studies, and illustrations from plays and novels.

Selections from U.S.A., the author's most famous and important work, appear in almost any recent anthology of American literature, used as a standard college text. The Oxford Anthology of American Literature says in part concerning Dos Passos and his work: Upon completion of his trilogy...
