Doolittle, Hilda (1886-1961)
page: The bisexual poet and memoirist, Hilda Doolittle, who published under the initials H. D., wrote poems and autobiographical prose works that celebrate women's romantic relationships with each other. Born on September 10, 1886, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, into a middle-class family of strong Moravian faith, Doolittle was the fourth of six children and only daughter of Charles Leander Doolittle, professor of mathematics and astronomy at Lehigh University (then University of Pennsylvania), and Helen Wolle Doolittle, manager of a chaotic household that paid great deference to the father. Sponsor Message.
She attended various private schools before she went off to Bryn Mawr for a year in 1905. Feeling an intellectual failure to her father and a social failure to her mother, the young H.D. left Bryn Mawr and looked for consolation in writing and reading Greek literature and in her engagement (disapproved of by the Doolittle family) to the upstart poet Ezra Pound, whom she had met in 1901. She also sought for a "sister," and in 1910 found Frances Josepha Gregg, a kindred spirit and her first female lover. What ensued was a painful romantic triangle between Hilda, Frances, and Ezra, the emotional intensity of which H.D. never fully left behind. In its aftermath, H.D. sailed for Europe with Gregg and Gregg's mother, where she soon began in earnest her literary career.

Doolittle, Hilda
(1886-1961), poet Born on September 10, 1886, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Hilda Doolittle was the daughter of an astronomer, and she was reared in the strict Moravian tradition of her mother's family. She entered Bryn Mawr College in 1904 and while a student there formed friendships with Marianne Moore , a fellow student, and with Ezra Pound (to whom she was briefly engaged) and William Carlos Williams, who were at the nearby University of Pennsylvania. Ill health forced her to leave college in 1906. Five years later she traveled to Europe for what was to have been a vacation but became a permanent stay, mainly in England and Switzerland. Her first published poems, sent to Poetry magazine by Pound, appeared under the initials H.D., which remained thereafter her nom de plume. Other poems appeared in Pound's anthology Des Imagistes (1914) and in the London journal The Egoist, edited by Richard Aldington, to whom she was married from 1913 to 1938. Doolittle was closely associated for much of her life with the British novelist Bryher (Annie Winifred Ellerman). H.D.'s first volume of verse

She took the name Bryher from one of the Scilly Isles, which she adored. Also a writer, she was a great fan of H.D.'s poetry, and their friendship blossomed into love. They were lifelong companions, although often maintaining separate residences and their independence. They travelled as cousins, and were together through the other loves of each others' lives, and through Bryher's marriages to McRobert Almon and Kenneth Macpherson. Together they went to Paris, mingling with the expatriate literary community, where Bryher helped establish McAlmon's press, which published Ernest Hemingway

Doolittle, Hilda
Doolittle, Hilda (1886-1961), American poet, known for her imagist verse (see Imagism ) and, later, her use of themes of mythology. Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Doolittle attended Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania but did not graduate. During her time there she met American poets William Carlos Williams and Ezra Pound , both of whom would later influence her work. In 1911 Doolittle moved to Europe, where she would spend most of her life. She renewed her friendship with Pound, and in 1912 Pound submitted several of Doolittle's poems, signed under the name "H.D., Imagiste," to the magazine Poetry; Doolittle adopted the initials as her pen name. She became involved with a group of imagist writers in England, and in 1913 Doolittle married English poet Richard Aldington . Her verse from this period, which includes the volume Sea Garden (1916) is characterized by short, precise lines in extremely free form.
By 1919 Doolittle's marriage had failed, her brother had been killed in World War I (1914-1918), and her father had died. That same year she became pregnant and almost died of illness. She also met English novelist Winifred Ellerman (who wrote under the pen name "Bryher") and formed a lifelong relationship with her. The two traveled to Greece, Egypt, Paris, and the United States over the next few years, during which Doolittle's books Hymen Heliodora and Other Poems Collected Poems of H.D.
