Donne, John
Born a Roman Catholic with Jesuit relatives, Donne did not go abroad to Douai to study, as was typical of English Roman Catholics of his time. Instead, he studied at Hart Hall, Oxford, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Afterward he studied law at Lincoln's Inn, London. He joined the staff of the Lord Chancellor, but eloped with his niece, Anne More, in 1601. Their marriage resulted in Donne losing his livelihood and being thrown into prison. Donne was known to the king, however, and after failing to secure a position in other fields of endeavor, he acceded to the king's desire that he enter the ordained ministry. He became Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in London six years later. Donne is the first and greatest of the group known as the Metaphysical Poets. His Songs and sonnets and Elegies are variations on the theme of love, but they are not typical Elizabethan love-poems. They contain a suprising breadth in the range of human experience they describe, and in the spiritual imagery they employ. Donne's Divine Poems are marked by unsurpassed passion, and much of his poetry explores the paradox of sexual experience in the religious and spiritual force in earthly passions. His religious poetry is grounded in a deep sense of sin and the awareness of judgement. As T. S. Eliot has written, he "was much possessed by death," and some of his most powerful sermons vividly illustrate Donne's almost medieval awareness of the universality of dissolution: "Ask not for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

Donne, John Devotions upon Emergent Occasions
On-Line Text Genre Memoir Keywords Art of Medicine Caregivers Communication Death and Dying ... Survival Summary The work consists of twenty-three devotions, each in three partsa meditation, an expostulation, and a prayerrecording and exploring Donne's experience of illness (probably typhus). The work traces the disease's course and treatment, beginning in the first devotion with the first signs of illness, moving through the patient's taking to bed and sending for physicians, their prescribing and carrying out various treatments, and a worsening of symptoms followed by the crisis where, in Devotion 17, the patient prepares himself for death. He then begins to recover, the physicians purge him, and, like Lazarus, he rises from his bed. The physicians then try to correct the cause of the disease in him, and, in the final devotion, warn the patient that a relapse is not out of the question. Donne explores the spiritual implications of each stage of his illness, using the experience of his body to provoke reflections on the health of the soul. For instance, in the first devotion he asks why sin, unlike physical sickness, does not show early signs which might enable one to get treatment in time. Donne uses the arrival of the physicians to explore Christ's role as physician to the soul, and the spots which appear on his body to meditate on Christ as the unspotted carrier of human stains.

John Donne and the "Anthropomorphic Map" Tradition

Almost twenty years ago, Claude Gandelman asked me for some assistance in determining just what had been written about John Donne and the anthropomorphic map tradition. Not surprisingly, we found that little had been done and he proceeded to write "The Poem as Map: John Donne and the 'Anthropomorphic Landscape' Tradition." Today, when I reread that piece (and the related chapter "Bodies, Maps Texts" in Reading Pictures, Viewing Texts ) I am reminded of Robert Burton's Democritus Junior whose introduction to the Anatomy of Melancholy cites the humanist commonplace that "A dwarf standing on the shoulders of a Giant may see farther than a Giant himself" . In this case, Gandelman serves as the giant and those of us who stand on his intellectual shoulders are thereby enabled to see a bit beyond the limits he lit up for us.

Seventeenth and Early Eighteenth Century Sonnets
William Drummond (1585-1649), known as the "Scottish Petrarch" wrote many sonnets inspired by the tragic death of his fiancee on the eve of their wedding. Lady Mary Wroth (c.1586-1640), niece of Philip Sidney, wrote a sequence of 83 sonnets and 19 songs that was included in her one published work, Urania John Donne (c.1572-1631) had little patience for the conventions of secular love; he wrote with equal passion of romantic love and religious faith and employed the sonnet accordingly, with intensity and wit. Donne's contemporary Ben Jonson (c.1572-1637) influenced a different set of poets, including Robert Herrick (1591-1674). The religious sonnets of George Herbert (1593-1633), like those of Donne, come as a refreshing break from Elizabethan convention and subject matter. John Milton (1608-1674) presents a striking contrast to most earlier sonneteers; his often complex sentences challenge the English sonnet's traditional structure of three quatrains capped by a couplet. The early eighteenth century saw a decline in the sonnet's popularity, but there were the odd successes and attempts by poets who did not use the sonnet often.
