I suffered six years of slave labour, deportation and separation from those I loved. Join me in my journey to freedom. I will take you to the slave labour camps of post World War II Russia; you will travel with me to my place of deportation after my release as a POW; and journey with me in a harrowing escape from Hungary and the clutches of the feared AVO. e-Book Very highly recommended THE PRICE OF FREEDOM is a deeply moving autobiography of Yugoslavia-born Alex Domokos. The book takes place during the years 1951 to 1962 with flashbacks to the author's youth in Hungary where his parents fled during political unrest, his years as an army officer during World War II, and his six years of torture and misery in Russian forced labor camps. Later, deported by Hungary's Communist government, his suffering continues as he is denied a decent job or wages and the ability to adequately provide for his family.Written with exquisite dignity, Domokos shares a life we can scarcely imagine. His struggle to live a simple life with his wife, and later their daughter, seems eternally out of his grasp. Living under a reign of distrust, suspicion and fear, he must fight for enough to eat, even for a decent place to sleep. But living in quarters without heat or privacy is nothing compared to the pain of separation from his family. THE PRICE OF FREEDOM demonstrates how senseless and counter-productive the Communist system was, a system that valued political gain over human rights. For Domokos and his countrymen, their price of freedom exceeded what any human should have to endure. Throughout the book, Domokos reveals in stunning detail the depth of suffering a person can withstand yet still attain an unbelievable level of resiliency.

Chapter One
Late May
Brakes squealed in protest as the old truck shuddered to a halt. Sealed in the cramped smuggler's hole surrounded by packing crates in the back of the vehicle, Sonja Sepsik crouched on a folded blanket. Cold fingers of fear squeezed the air from her lungs and fed her growing claustrophobia. Fists clenched tight, she fought the tremors of rising panic that flowed through her body. I'll be okay, I'll be okay , the young woman repeated to herself time and time again as she fought the urge to beat on the sides of the compartment. Above the wheeze and cough of the truck engine, Sonja heard the muffled voices of the driver and border guards as they haggled over the amount of bribe required to allow the vehicle into Hungary without inspection. She bowed her dark head and made the sign of the cross.

Warmest Greetings to my Readers:
I was born in Szabadka, Yugoslav in 1921 but while still an infant I was smuggled over the border to Hungary, where our family settled.
My father was an educated man and instilled a love of literature in me at a very early age. At the age of fourteen I was President of our school's literary club and that same year won my first writing contest for a story on the history of the school, which had been established in the 13th century.
As members of the upper-middle class, it was customary to send sons to military college for a higher education. Upon graduation I planned to follow in my father's footsteps and join the police force, however World War Two intervened and I was called to front line duty in the Gendarmery. Two short months after I married, I was captured by the Russians during the siege of Budapest and so began six long years as a prisoner of war in Russia.
It was during my captivity that my talent for writing and story telling really came out. In a prison camp life focuses on food, or lack thereof, but the detainee is also starved for mental stimulation. To entertain my fellow inmates I began writing stories on empty cement bags, then, on certain evenings I would hold what began to be called the "Domokos Evening Show" and I would have a reading of the latest chapter of whatever I was writing. My first "novel" was called "The Invention of Writing in Egypt". I'm sure it wasn't very well written however it was very well received by men who desperately needed a boost to their morale. None of the writing that I did during those six years survived, as we were not allowed to retain any written material when we were moved from one camp to another.

'Author Interviews' You'll discover revealing interviews by authors who are living their dream. They share valuable insights and information to help all writers discover how to succeed. Below you will find the list of questions asked of Rita Y. Toews Her bio follows the interview. Enjoy! 1. Writers are encouraged to write daily and find their voice. Do you feel you have more than one voice in your writing? RYT: I definitely have more than one voice in my writing, since I write in several genres. I have several children's illustrated books to my credit, but I have also co-authored a non-fiction memoir, a sci-fi novel, a police procedural novel and an historical fiction. 2. When did your passion for writing begin? RYT: I first decided I wanted to write when I was in my early twenties, but it wasn't until I was almost 50 that I decided I needed to do something about it. That was when the desire really took off and I began to write.
