Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was born at Daresbury, Cheshire, on January 27, 1832. His parents were clergyman Charles and Frances Dodgson (nee Lutwidge). He was the oldest son, and third of 11 children. At an early age to entertain himself and his family Charles began magic tricks, marionette shows, drawings, poems, and stories written for homemade newspapers. These magazines included "Useful and Instructive Poetry" (five issues), "The Rectory Magazine" (nine issues), and "The Rectory Umbrella". Charles was eleven when his family moved to Croft in North Yorkshire and, at the age of twelve, was sent to Richmond School as a border. He was taught at Richmond by James Tate who formed a good idea of Charles' potential, especially in mathematics. On the 27th of January 1846 Charles was enrolled at Rugby and stayed for three years. When Charles was young he wrote to entertain his brothers and sisters. He didn't stop writing while he was in school. In 1860 Dodgson published his first two mathematical textbooks and, by February 1861, had completed another and started work on four more. He also contributed to the magazine "The Train". Alice's adventures began on a boating trip on the Thames going to Godstow in the summer of 1862. In August he made two more river trips with the Liddell children and continued the Alice stories.

A Word on Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, was a man of diverse interests - in mathematics, logic, photgraphy, art, theater, religion, medicine, and science. He was happiest in the company of children for whom he created puzzles, clever games, and charming letters. As all Carroll admirers know, his book "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865), became an immediate success and has since been translated into more than eighty languages. The equally popular sequel "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There", was published in 1872. The "Alice" books are but one example of his wide ranging authorship. "The Hunting of the Snark", a classic nonsense epic (1876) and "Euclid and His Modern Rivals", a rare example of humorous work concerning mathematics, still entice and intrigue today's students. "Sylvie and Bruno", published toward the end of his life contains startling ideas including an 1889 description of weightlessness. The humor, sparkling wit and genius of this Victorian Englishman have lasted for more than a century. His books are among the most quoted works in the English language, and his influence (with that of his illustrator, Sir John Tenniel) can be seen everywhere, from the world of advertising to that of atomic physics.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is better known by the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll". Although he was a mathematician, he is best known as the author of Alice's adventures in wonderland (1865) and Through the looking glass (1872), children's books that are among the most popular of all time. They are distinguished as satire and as examples of verbal wit. Dodgson wrote mathematical works under his own name but for his children's books he invented the pen name "Lewis Carroll" by translating his first two names "Charles Lutwidge" into Latin as "Carolus Lodovicus", then anglicising and reversing their order. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's father was the Reverend Charles Dodgson. Charles Dodgson senior was born in 1800 and studied at the University of Oxford where he gained a First Class degree in both mathematics and classics. He was appointed as a mathematics lecturer at Oxford where he held a Fellowship but, on marrying his cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827, he had to give up his Oxford Fellowship. He then became a curate at All Saints' Church in Daresbury and it was in that town that ten of Charles and Frances' eleven children were born. Charles Lutwidge was the eldest of his parents three boys, having two elder sisters Fanny, born in 1828, and Elizabeth, born in 1830. Charles was baptised on 11 July 1832 in his father's church and grew up in a strict Christian household. His early education, like that of his brothers and sisters, was provided by his parents. He read mostly religious books as a child and an indication of his rapid progress is that he had read

The Beginning: 1832 to July 1862
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better known to many by his pen-name, Lewis Carroll) was born on January 27th 1832 at the parsonage (photographed at right) at Daresbury in Cheshire. He was the eldest son and third child (out of eleven) of an Anglican clergyman Charles and Frances Dodgson (nee Lutwidge). For the next five years he worked steadily until he attained a college Mastership (in October 1855). During these five years Dodgson continued to write and compiled a scrapbook of his best writings, called "Mischmasch". "Mischmasch" included a four line verse, entitled "Stanza of Anglo-Saxon Poetry", that was to become the first verse of his later nonsense poem "Jabberwocky". In 1855 two important events took place that had a profound effect on the rest of Dodgson's life. Henry Liddell arrived as the new Dean at Christ Church and Dodgson was introduced to photography and the
