Personality David Stuart Dodge By Andrew I. Killgore September 9, 1985, Page 10 David Stuart Dodge might be called a metaphor. A metaphor for the United States in the Middle East. Shortly before he was born in Beirut in 1922 an American commission traveled to the Near East to question the population. Did the Arab peoples recently freed from Turkish rule want British or French "mandates,'' (a euphemism for colonies) supposedly to lead them to ultimate independence. The overwhelming response: Immediate independence was desired, but if there had to be a mandatory power, these Arab peoples wanted it to be the United States. Faith in America could not have been greater. Credit for this belongs to a remarkable succession of Americans who started arriving in the Middle East about 150 years ago to teach and to heal. David Dodge is a scion of those selfless Americans. His great grandfather, Daniel Bliss, founded the American University of Beirut in 1866, Dr, Bayard Dodge, David's father, whose name is still revered in the Middle East, was President of A.U.B. from 1923 to 1948. David, very highly regarded in his own right and as a Dodge, a name almost synonymous with the prestigious university, was kidnapped in 1982 while Acting President of A.U.B. He was held hostage for a year. The real target of the kidnappers was not a beloved American and a venerated institution, but a brutalizing American policy that has torn the Arab East apart in the name of security for Israel, The message was clear.

David Dodge
David Dodge was born in Berkeley, California. His career as a writer began when he made a bet with his wife Elva that he could write a better mystery novel than the one she was reading. He drew on his professional experience as a Certified Public Accountant to create his first series character, San Francisco tax expert and reluctant detective JAMES "WHIT" WHITNEY Death and Taxes was published in 1941 and he won five dollars from Elva. Three more Whitney novels were published between 1943 and 1946. After Pearl Harbor Dodge was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and emerged three years later as a Lieutenant Commander. On his release from active duty, he set out for Guatemala by car with his wife and daughter. His Latin American experiences produced a second series character, expatriate private investigator and tough-guy adventurer AL COLBY , and launched Dodge's second career as a travel writer. Dodge was fond of explaining that while many writers traveled in order to gather material to write about, his goal was to write in order to gather money to travel. David Dodge also wrote short stories, magazine articles, and plays. He is best known as the author of To Catch a Thief , which Alfred Hitchcock turned into a film starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.

The Artful Rescue of Canadian Health Care David Dodge's life of public sector service began nearly 30 years ago. With undergraduate degrees in math and economics from Queen's University and a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton, Mr. Dodge taught at Queen's before joining the civil service in 1972, first in social policy research and then on to tax analysis and policy analysis in economic development. In 1984, he became Assistant Deputy Minister of Fiscal Policy and Economic Analysis and in 1992 became the Deputy Minister of Finance, serving under both Michael Wilson and Don Mazankowski. After playing instrumental roles in creating the GST and in eliminating the deficit, Mr. Dodge took a sabbatical in 1997 at UBC, where he brushed up on health policy issues before joining the Ministry of Health as Deputy in the summer of 1998. PARADISE LOST
In 1789, the House of Representatives compiled a list of possible Constitutional Amendments, some of which would ultimately become our Bill of Rights. The House proposed seventeen; the Senate reduced the list to twelve. During this process that Senator Tristrain Dalton (Mass.) proposed an Amendment seeking to prohibit and provide a penalty for any American accepting a "title of Nobility" (RG 46 Records of the U.S. Senate). Although it wasn't passed, this was the first time a "title of nobility" amendment was proposed.
Twenty years later, in January, 1810, Senator Reed proposed another "Title of Nobility" Amendment (History of Congress, Proceedings of the Senate, p. 529-530). On April 27, 1810, the Senate voted to pass this 13th Amendment by a vote of 26 to 1; the House resolved in the affirmative 87 to 3; and the following resolve was sent to the States for ratification:
"If any citizen of the United States shall Accept, claim, receive or retain any title of nobility or honour, or shall, without the consent of Congress, accept and retain any present, pension, office or emolument of any kind whatever, from any emperor, king, prince or foreign power, such person shall cease to be a citizen of the United States, and shall be incapable of holding any office of trust or profit under them, or either of them."

The Missing 13th Amedment

Part I
" TITLES OF NOBILITY" AND "HONOR"
David Dodge, Researcher Alfred Adask, Editor In the winter of 1983, archival research expert David Dodge, and former Baltimore police investigator Tom Dunn, were searching for evidence of government corruption in public records stored in the Belfast Library on the coast of Maine. By chance, they discovered the library's oldest authentic copy of the Constitution of the United States (printed in 1825). Both men were stunned to see this document included a 13th Amendment that no longer appears on current copies of the Constitution. Moreover, after studying the Amendment's language and historical context, they realized the principle intent of this "missing" 13th Amendment was to prohibit lawyers from serving in government. So began a seven year, nationwide search for the truth surrounding the most bizarre Constitutional puzzle in American history the unlawful removal of a ratified Amendment from the Constitution of the United States.
Since 1983, Dodge and Dunn have uncovered additional copies of the Constitution with the "missing" 13th Amendment printed in at least eighteen separate publications by ten different states and territories over four decades from 1822 to 1860. In June of this year, Dodge uncovered the evidence that this missing 13th Amendment had indeed been lawfully ratified by the state of Virginia and was therefore an authentic Amendment to the American Constitution. If the evidence is correct and no logical errors have been made, a 13th Amendment restricting lawyers from serving in government was ratified in 1819 and removed from our Constitution during the tumult of the Civil War. Since the Amendment was never lawfully repealed, it is still the Law today.

DAVE ROBSONS HOME PAGE
Hi, and welcome to my web page. I am a Technician working in the Audio Visual Centre at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in the North East of England (or Central Britain if you like). I am married to Diana and we live in Newcastle with our dog Lizzie. The North East of England is a very wild and beautiful area with a lot of important history and Newcastle is one of the best places in the world for a good night out. Have a look at some photographs of the area in the "Where I Live" link below. Like a lot of men I have an interest in classic cars. However my main interest is in American cars. In particular the cars made by the American Chrysler Corp. which include the makes DODGE and PLYMOUTH. Cars made by these companys are nicknamed 'MOPARS'. Our daily car is a 1998 Chrysler Neon LE which is built in the USA to UK spec. and sold through Chrysler/Jeep dealers over here. It has a 16 valve 2 litre engine that makes it quite "nippy" and the auto box makes driving a very relaxed experience compared to normal British driving. Our other car is a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T which I have owned since 1989 but has been undergoing a rebuild for the last few years. It has a 7.2 litre V8 engine that originally produced 375 HP but now has something in the region of 500 HP. I created the first web site in the world for this model of car and it is still considered one of the best. You can find it by following one of the links below.

The parking brake on my M300 is a lever under the dash to the left of the steering column. It looks like you would set it by pulling up on the handle. I have the chassis manual, but there is nothing about how to release the brake. The lever doesn't have any buttons or triggers as far as I can tell.
I block the wheels any time I'm on a slope, but it would be nice to know how to release the brake in case someone sets it.

L A S T W A S H The images of the Last Wash are invocations of absence and loss from the American night. Photographed without flash from the street, the images embody a subtle conflation of exterior and interior of the ubiquitous laundromat, a locale that retains a curious presence/absence in most American cities. Though they are to be found in most densely populated neighborhoods, they are spaces which generally embody no aesthetic or decorative energy apart from their own pure functionality. Quietly camouflaged between stores, restaurants and cafes, they are spaces that subtly blend the public and the private. They are extensions - street-side satellites - of the apartments and flats of the urban dweller who arrives on a weekly or daily basis to work and wait.
An important inspiration for this series is the work of Eugene Atget whose images of the empty streets and shop windows of Paris also speak to the idea of absence and the haunting immateriality of our material vestiges. For though these rooms of machines and tables seem grounded in a kind of ineluctable permanence, the very spaciousness of the night insures the coming of the last wash.
