Djebar has also published poetry, plays, and short stories, and has produced two films. In her books Djebar has explored the struggle for social emancipation and the Muslim woman's world in its complexities. Her strong feminist stance has earned her much praise. Several of her works deal with the impact of the war on women's mind. "Just so I could have worries that never change whether it's peace or wartime, so I could wake up in the middle of the night and question myself on what it is that sleeps in the depths of the heart of the man sharing my bed... Just so I could give birth and weep, for life never comes unaccompanied to a woman, death is always right behind, furtive, quick, and smiling at the mothers..." (from 'There Is No Exile' in Women in Their Apartments '"The other women have grown silent," I said. "The only one left to weep now is the mother... Such is life," I added a moment later. "There are those who forget or who simply sleep. And then there are those who keep bumping into the walls of the past. May God take pity on them!"'

The day that Assia Djebar's father, a teacher in the French colonial educational system, first escorted his daughter to school, he set her on a bilingual and bicultural journey that resulted in her development as an artist and an intellectual. Djebar recalls the scene in L'amour, la fantasia to express his uneasy alliance with the French language and culture. Yet Djebar's experience, in contrast to theirs, is distinctly gendered. She came to believe that the process of Western acculturation, resulting in her mastery of the colonizer's language and access to public space, excluded her from most, if not all, aspects of traditional woman's world. L'amour, la fantasia

Man is the outer lamp, woman is the inner lamp. Proverb Language is no longer linked to the knowing of things, but to human freedom. Michel Foucault
Feminist and postcolonial theories alike have begun by simply subverting images of existing hierarchies (gender/class/culture/race) in a patriarchal or colonial setting. This strategy was not very effective, because a person may belong to more than one group simultaneously, as Trinh Minh-ha suggests by proposing the "triple bind" (6) in which women of the so-called Third World Borderlands/La Frontera and Lost in Translation , attempt to articulate how their identities are constructed and contribute "to paradigmatic shifts in theorizing difference" (Yarbro-Bejarano 7). These authors approach the problem of constructing a politics of identity from a transnational perspective, recognizing and foregrounding the historical specificity of their individual experiences and asserting that in a responsibly transnational critique of constructions of identity, historical contexts cannot be dismissed. Their texts share a focus on transnationalism, an emphasis on the historical, global, and contextual specificity of experience, particularly as it relates to questions of language. They respond to Gayatri Spivak's injunction that "one needs to be vigilant against simple notions of identity which overlap with language or location" ("Poststructuralism" 201) by beginning with discussions of language and then building on those discussions to create their larger theories of identity.

28 Mar 2003, by Grit Weinhold - Film critic The Algerian novelist, poet and filmmaker is one of North Africa's best-known and most widely acclaimed writers. She has also published short stories, plays and even wrote an opera two years ago. Among the prizes she has received so far is the International Peace Prize of the German Book Trade Association of the year 2000. She was the first African woman to receive this prize. The day that Assia Djebar's father first escorted his daughter to school he set her on a bilingual and bicultural journey that resulted in her development as an artist and an intellectual. Liberated from the female enclosure of her Algerian sisters, she reached maturity haunted by the weight of exile. In her books Djebar has explored the struggle for social emancipation and the Muslim woman's world in all its complexities.

Emanzipation ohne Feminismus: Zum 60.
