Diogenes: Forget Athens, head to Arizona!
Story Tools WASHINGTON (Creators Syndicate) Diogenes, the 4th century B.C. philosopher, used to walk through Athens in broad daylight carrying a lighted lamp while searching unsuccessfully for an honest man. With no disrespect intended to residents of Greece's capital either living or not, let me suggest that Diogenes' search would be far more fruitful if it were conducted in 21st century Arizona. In addition to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., whose fearless candor, self-deprecating wit and fierce patriotism very nearly derailed the GOP king-makers' well-funded coronation in 2000 of their anointed governor of Texas, we must now add the name of another Arizona Republican (that's right), Rep. Jeff Flake, who this week announced he would not challenge the renomination in the state GOP primary of John McCain to an expected fourth Senate term. Why did Flake who completely supported the Bush tax cuts that McCain strongly opposed, who fought against McCain's landmark bill to reform campaign finance and who had the deep-pockets backing of the Club for Growth, a political action committee of tax-cutting Wall Street types that in 2000 had provided more than $200,000 to Flake's first, winning campaign choose not to make the race?

Diogenes von Sinope (ca. 412 - 323 v. u. Z.)

132. The Diogenes Group
I hearby call to order this session of the diogenes Group. It had all started twosummers previously, when the new diogenes Group had barely begun to exist.
http://home.pon.net/phoebeg/The_diogenes_group.html
"I hearby call to order this session of the Diogenes Group. All in favor of dispensing with the reading of the minutes of the last meeting?" "Aye." "Yo." "Aye!" "Agreed." Hai There were chuckles at Oscar's pun. "All opposed?" Silence, aside from Charlie's wheezing nose. Albert H. Prescott, or simply "Prescott," as everyone called him, even his mother, pushed his horn rimmed glasses back up the bridge of his freckled nose. and rapped the gavel on the redwood burl table. "All right then, the motion passes." Which wasn't surprisingwe almost never reviewed the minutes of the previous meeting. But Prescott was a stickler for proper procedure. Then he cleared his throat, and said, "Is there any other new business that we wish to visit before we come to the issue for which this meeting has been called...?" "Yes your honor, I do...ah, if you don't mind a slight interruption?" Charlie sputtered out. Prescott nodded to him. "Of course not. You have the floor." Charlie rose from his seat, wringing his cap in his hands. "It's about the budget, your honor." I could almost hear Frank's eyes roll. Charlie, the group's treasurer, had been known as a worrywort since the 1st grade. Practically the polar oppisate of Frank the "Dare-Devil." But we'd all learned through long experience to listen to his concerns...his ability to see ahead had more than a few times pulled our fat out of the fire before we'd even smelled the smoke. He continued. "About the Minuteman, in particular." He was referring to the 3-man semi-rigid airship the group had been constructing in my family's barn. It was a bold concept, if I do say so myself, and the pride of the group. We'd been building it since the previous November, ever since we'd gotten ahold of a small treasure trove of lightweight aluminum piping, and were almost three-quarters finished. The target launch date was the 4th of July, and until then, Minuteman was, officially, the Group's intended float entry in the Independence Day parade. Only a few people outside the Group knew that the real plan was to premiere the "float"

Diogenes Laertius (3 rd Century A.D.) is the primary source for the surviving complete letters of Epicurus and for biographical and other pertinent information about him: Index:
Biography of Epicurus
Epicurus, son of Neocles and Chaerestrate, was an Athenian of the Gargettus ward and the Philaidae clan, as Metrodorus says in his book On Noble Birth . He is said by Heraclides (in his Epitome of Sotion ) as well as by others, to have been brought up at Samos after the Athenians had sent colonists there and to have come to Athens at the age of eighteen, at the time when Xenocrates was head of the Academy and Aristotle was in Chalcis. After the death of Alexander of Macedon and the expulsion of the Athenian colonists from Samos by Perdiccas, Epicurus left Athens to join his father in Colophon; for some time he stayed there and gathered students around him, then returned to Athens again during the archonship of Anaxicrates [307-306 B.C.]. For a while, it is said, he pursued his studies in common with other philosophers, but afterwards put forward independent views by founding the school named after him.

Diogenes Die und Unwissenheit. subsistenzorientierten Wirtschaftsform Cynicism is merely the art of seeing things as they are instead of as they ought to be.
