Joan Didion
Slouching Toward Bethlehem
Didion's work appears mostly in newpaper colums, but occasionally in compilations. She writes about the 60s as not only an observer but aslo as a participant. Her work describes her experiences growing up in California during the 50s and her coming of age in the 60s as she grew further from her roots. Her work nostaglically describes the people and places, as well as the time, that was the 60s. After starting as novelist, Didion's reporting focus on the off-beat and off the beaten path. Above: Joan Didion, circa 1970. I had, at this time, a sharp apprehension not of what it was like to be old but of what it was like to open the door to the stranger and find that the stranger did indeed have the knife. In a few lines of dialogue in a neurologist's office in Beverly Hills, the improbable had become the probable, the norm: things which happened only to other people could in fact happen to me. I could be struck by lightning, could dare to eat a peach and be poisoned by the cyanide in the stone. The startling fact was this: my body was offering a precise physiological equivalent to what had been going on in my mind. "Lead a simple life," the neurologist advised. "Not that it makes any difference we know about." In other words it was another story without a narrative.

From Off Center: Essays by Barbara Grizzutti Harrison
JOAN DIDION: ONLY DISCONNECT
(October, 1979) I chose first, for no particular reason, to read an essay from Slouching Towards Bethlehem, "Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream." In this essay, Didion reports, or purports to report, on the murder case of one Lucille Maxwell Miller, who was convicted by the State of California of having killed her husband by dousing him with gasoline and allowing him to burn to death while he slept in a Volkswagen she had been driving. Until I sat down to write this essay, I could not, in fact, remember whether Lucille Maxwell Miller had been convicted or acquitted. Now, unlike the heroines of Didion's fiction, I do not regard memory as an affliction; I remember. I remember in part because I have no choice, but also in part because (unlike Didion's heroines, whose fate depends less upon memory and volition than upon selective amnesia), I believe that without memory there is no civilization. To complain ("I am so tired of remembering things") of remembering is to express a wish to be dead, to return to some pre-Edenic state in which good and evil, right and wrong, do not exist. It is a wish to erase not only one's personal painful past but our collective past which, in turn, is an invitation to believe that we cannot, individually or collectively, affect the present or the future. No; in fact, her subject is always herself.

Political Fictions
by Joan Didion
Vintage Press, 2001. paper
Reagan Administration - December 18, 1997 (p91)
As President, Ronald Reagan acted on the work habits of a lifetime: he regarded his daily schedule as being something like a shooting script in which characters came and went, scenes were rehearsed and acted out, and the plot was advanced one day at a time, and not always in sequence. The Chief of Staff was a sort of producer, making certain that the star had what he needed to do his best; the staff was like the crew, invisible behind the lights, watching the performance their behind-the scenes efforts had made possible.... Reagan's performance was almost always flawless. If he was scheduled to receive a visitor at ten o'clock, he would finish whatever else he was doing at 9:58, clear off his desk, clear his mind of whatever had gone before, and prepare himself for the next scene.
Dinesh D'Souza, when he arrived at the Reagan White House as a senior domestic policy analyst in I987, was twenty-six years old, a resident of the United States only since I978 but already a name within what had come on the right to be called "the movement." He was a native of India who seemed to have arrived in this country with preternatural pitch for the exact charged chords
(affirmative action, multiculturalism, gender studies, the academy in general) that drove its politics of resentment, and he played them, first as a founding editor of The Dartmouth Review, then as editor of the equally strident Princeton Prospect, managing editor of the Heritage Foundation's Policy Review, and biographer of the Moral Majority's Jerry Falwell.

"I" Versus "They": The Textual and Communal Self in Three Female Autobiographical Texts Joan Didion
Rachel Aviv '04, English 171, Sages and Satirists , Brown University, 2003
Introduction
"I" Versus "They": The Textual and Communal Self in Joan Didion's Writings
Jerzy Kozinski once described Didion as "our quintessential essayist . . . always at the center" (Carton, 308) an odd claim about a woman whose writings perpetually articulate the absence of any center, the moral and social dilemmas of living in a world where "the center cannot hold" ( Slouching Towards Bethlehem , xi). In Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album , Didion's essays explore the disintegration and fragmentation surrounding her and yet, within these essays, Didion recomposes her own self. By the "imposition of a narrative line upon disparate images ( White Album , 11), Didion writes herself to the center: Didion, the "common denominator of "all [she] sees" ( Slouching Towards Bethlehem , 136), becomes the medium by which she reads the external world. She embodies the "disparate images" that lie outside her she "affects absorption in other people's favorite dresses, other people's trout" ( STB Didion explodes the notion of an autonomous self sustained outside the range of social experience. She conflates the internal with the external, the personal with the universal; she treats autobiographical facts as cultural evidence. She is constantly "perceiving the larger point . . . making that inductive leap from the personal to the political" (
