by Charles Dickens England's Court of Chancery and its lawyers are the villains and targets of Dickens' pointed criticism in what is considered by many to be one of his best novels. A disputed will/inheritance, Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce, that drags on for generations lays waste to the wealth and health of the memorable characters held in its thrall. The Chimes
by Charles Dickens David Copperfield
by Charles Dickens Greatly autobiographical and always popular, this novel was published in 1850. Dickens abandoned his intended autobiography and used large sections in this novel. He also made use of a first person narrator, a new technique for him. David's life does not exactly depict Dickens' life, but many childhood parallels exist, as well as his stint working in a factory and his schooling and reading. David's love for Dora Spenlor also reflects Dickens' passion for Maria Beadnell. He even throws in his departure from parliamentary reporting to become a successful novelist. Doctor Marigold

Raised by a hard, pragmatic father concerned only with sterile principles, Tom and Louisa Gradgrind grow up with little imagination, culture or concern for others. Louisa chooses Josiah Bounderby for a husband, a vulgar man who owns a bank and a mill, whom she leaves after a while and returns to her father's house. Her unscrupulous brother adds to the family crises by robbing his brother-in-law's bank. The father finally sees how his cold, principled upbringing has damaged his children's lives.

Dickens, Charles
English novelist and one of the most popular writers in the history of literature. In his enormous body of works, Dickens combined masterly storytelling, humor, pathos, and irony with sharp social criticism and acute observation of people and places, both real and imagined.
Dickens was born February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth and spent most of his childhood in London and Kent, both of which appear frequently in his novels. He started school at the age of nine, but his education was interrupted when his father, an amiable but careless minor civil servant, was imprisoned for debt in 1824. The boy was then forced to support himself by working in a shoe-polish factory. A resulting sense of humiliation and abandonment haunted him for life, and he later described this experience, only slightly altered, in his novel David Copperfield (1849-1850). From 1824 to 1826, Dickens again attended school. For the most part, however, he was self-educated. Among his favorite books were those by such great 18th-century novelists as Henry Fielding and Tobias Smollett, and their influence can be discerned in Dickens's own novels. In 1827 Dickens took a job as a legal clerk. After learning shorthand, he began working as a reporter in the courts and Parliament, perhaps developing the power of precise description that was to make his creative writing so remarkable.

Charles Dickens, 1812-1870
Biographical note
19th Century English author, possibly second only to Shakespeare in lasting popularity. Much of his work dealt with the social issues of the day, and were influential in bringing about change. Many of his novels first appeared in serial form, making his output even more astonishing, because they were written to a deadline. More:

74. Quarterly Review
Abstract Established in 1809 as a Tory rival to the Whig supporting Edinburgh Review, the idea for the journal came from Sir Walter Scott. The Quarterly Review stood politically for preserving the status quo. The journal was very hostile to the work of writers in favour of political reform. Writers such as Percy Bysshe Shelley, Leigh Hunt, William Hazlitt, Thomas Babington Macaulay and charles dickens all received hostile reviews in the journal, whereas the work of Jane Austin and Sir Walter Scott was warmly praised. It was alleged that John Wilson Croker's savage review of John Keat's Endymion contributed to the poet's early death. The Quarterly Review ceased publication in 1967.

Douglas Jerrold, the son of the actor, Samuel Jerrold, was born in London in 1803. At the age of ten he joined the navy but he was deeply upset by the way the officers treated the men on board ship. Jerrold was particularly horrified by the way officers flogged the men from minor offences and this gave him a life-long hatred of authority.
After a couple of years in the navy Douglas Jerrold left to became a printer's apprentice. After completing his training Jerrold became a compositor on the Sunday Monitor but he eventually rose to become the newspaper's drama critic. Jerrold developed a strong interest in the theatre and began writing plays. After the success of

Dickens, Charles John Huffham

Grave location: London: Westminster Abbey (Poets' Corner)
Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth as the son of a clerk in the Naval Pay Office. His father spent far too much money and in 1824 he was imprisoned in Marshalsea debtor's prison in Southwark. For young Charles this was a very traumatizing experience. Apart from the shame, he had to leave school to work at Warren's Blacking Factory. This terrible period in his life largely explains his social concern in his future novels, especially in "David Copperfield" and "Great Expectations".
In 1829 Dickens became a free lance reporter and in 1830 he fell in love with a banker's daughter, Maria Beadnell. In 1833 their relationship ended. In 1835 he became engaged to Catherine Hogarth and he married her on April 2, 1836.
In 1834 Dickens had adopted the pseudonym "Boz" and in 1836 the first "sketches by Boz" appreared in print. These sketches accompanied the polular illustrations by Robert Seymour. Seymour, however, commited suicide and Dickens turned his work into what would become "The Pickwick Papers" (serialized in 1837), an instant succes.
Dickens now became a professional novelist, rapidly producing the long and complex books he is still famous for. At the same time he was still working as a journalist and an editor. In 1850 he started his own magazine, Household Words, edited by himself.

80. A Victorian Christmas
Language arts discussion on Christmas and charles dickens.
http://www.iuinfo.indiana.edu/ocm/packages/vicxmas.html
"We were to have a superb dinner, consisting of a leg of pickled pork and greens, and a pair of roast stuffed fowls. A handsome mince pie had been made yesterday morning . . . and the pudding was already on the boil." From Great Expectations by Charles Dickens BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Stop a dozen people at random on the street and ask them what the term "Victorian" means, and their answers may vary from furniture and architecture to the mention of a short, pudgy queen of Great Britain. Asking about Charles Dickens' version of Christmas will improve your odds. The truth is that we are more indebted to holiday customs of Queen Victoria's reign than we realize, thanks in part to Dickens. Who were the Victorians? "Historically they were people born in the 1820s who came into maturity in the '30s, '40s and '50s," said Donald Gray, professor of English at Indiana University and editor of a journal dealing with Victorian life and literature. He explained that "Victorian" usually refers to people who had certain standards of decorum, style of dress and customs. Gray believes that at Christmas time the most distinctive of those customs were feasting and benevolence.
