Charles Dickens, Seer
By Jane Jacobs Hard Times , Dickens's shortest novel, was written in 1854 and published the same year, falling roughly midway in the author's career as a novelist. Its two immediate predecessors were David Copperfield and Bleak House , its immediate successors Little Dorrit and A Tale of Two Cities , all sensationally successful. Yet Hard Times seems to have been Dickens's least popular novel during his own time and subsequently. One disappointed critic speculated that cuts imposed for serialization were responsible. However, Hard Times was serialized in Household Words , a periodical that Dickens not only founded but edited, so we must presume that the text we have is the text Dickens wanted. 3246 words The full text of this piece is only available to subscribers of the Review 's electronic edition . Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Charles Dickens was born on Friday, February 7, 1812 in Landport, Hampshire. His father was a clerk in the navy pay office. In 1814 Dickens moved to London, and then to Chatham, where he received some education. He was the second in a family of six children. After his father was imprisoned at the Marshalsea, London, for non-payment of debts, in 1824, Charles took a job in a blacking factory. Next, from 1824 until 1827 Dickens studied at Wellington House Academy, London. From 1827 to 1828 he was a law office clerk, and then worked as a shorthand reporter at Doctor's Commons. In the 1840s Dickens founded Master Humphrey's Cloak and edited the London Daily News. Dickens's relationship with Maria Beadnell, the daughter of a banker, lasted for four years. Afterwards, he married the daughter of his friend George Hogarth, Catherine Hogart in 1836. When Catherine's sisters, Georgiana, moved in with the Dickenses, he fell in love with her. Even though, Dickens had 10 children with Catherine, they were separated in 1858. Additionally, Dickens also had a long-lasting relation with the actress Ellen Ternan, whom he had met by the late 1850s. From the 1840s Dickens spent much time traveling and campaigning against many of the social evils of his time. In addition he gave talks and reading, wrote pamphlets, plays, and letters. In 1844 to 1845 he lived in Italy, Switzerland and Paris. From 1858 to 1868, he gave lecturing tours in Britain and the United States.

Dickens is probably the best known and most popular of British 19th century novelists. This is due not only to the quality of his writing in itself but also to the widespread adaptation of his work for the stage and the screen, something already foreshadowed by Dickens' own highly successful second career as a public performer in recitals of readings from his own work, an activity that took him all over Britain and North America.
After a stormy childhood produced by his father's financial misadventures he began his writing career as a journalist and was a leading reporter of parliamentary debates but he soon achieved success also as a writer of short sketches and humorous short stories. Some of these were incorporated into later collections such as Sketches by Boz ( his pseudonym ) and The Pickwick Papers and their popularity and that of the many colourful, comic characters appearing in later novels have given him a wide reputation as a comic or, at least, a light-hearted writer. It has even been suggested that early books such as A Christmas Carol with its ghosts, family jollifications and its pantomime defeat of evil miserliness by goodwill, was a major factor in creating the modern English Christmas which is usually far more lavishly celebrated than in many other parts of Europe including Scotland.
