Philip K. Dick: Reason, Mind, and Being
Roger D. Cook ( rogercook@qwest.com This was what happened to all the things that came out of the wet earth, out of the filthy slime and mold. All things that lived, big and little. They appeared, struggling out of the sticky wetness. And then, after a time, they died. Philip K. Dick
Fragment from the unfinished novel: Gather Yourselves Together
Preliminary considerations of what kind of traits an android might possess are often discussed by proponents of artificial intelligence in questions of philosophy, and linguistics. Philosophy of the mind is concerned with what the brain is construction of as a basis for how to understand how the brain behaves in relation to external causation, neophysical states and various psychological interpretations of mental activity. Philosophers often categorize theories of the mind into materialism, dualism, and functionalism. In order to elucidate the various possible positions taken by P.K.D. I will discuss each of these in turn. Materialism is the view that the mind is simply a phenomena that is not separated from the brain. The brain is governed by the laws of physics and biology. Materialists believe these two fields can give us the answers of how the mind works and consequently how we act. The materialist's central claim is that the brain and our actions are influenced only by chemicals and the firing of neurons. In short, the material of the brain can have causal power over the material of the world. This view is often espoused by the behavioral psychologists like John Watson and B.F. Skinner. In his article on the mind/body problem philosopher Jerry Fodor puts it this way: "All the talk of mental causes can be eliminated from the language of psychology and philosophy in favor of talk of environmental stimuli and behavioral responses" (p. 114). This material interpretation of brain states makes the problem of causation easy for the materialists to explain.

The Psychedelic Shakespeare Solution presents : I UNDERSTAND PHILIP K. DICK by Terence Mckenna Afterword which appeared in the book : In Pursuit of Valis: Selections from the Exegesis edited by Lawrence Sutin This raises some questions: Can we refer to a delusional system as a folie a' deux , if the deux Does the delusion of one visionary ecstatic validate the delusion of another? How many deluded, or illuminated ecstatics does it take to make a reality? PKD proved that it only takes one. But two is better. Wrong. Or rather, of course, sure. But that is not the point, the point is that I understand Philip K. Dick. I know that sounds like hubris and if I am wrong I am sorry (as*Phil says somewhere.) (as* PKD lived at 1126, then a few years later and for six months I lived at 1624.) But part of the delusional system in which I live contains and adumbrates the notion that I know what happened to the poor dude. We shared an affliction, a mania, sort of like Queequeg and Ishmael. And like one of those whale chasing sailors "I alone escaped to tell thee of it". Schizophrenia is not a psychological disorder peculiar to human beings. Schizophrenia is not a disease at all but rather a localized traveling discontinuity of the space time matrix itself. It is like a travelling whirl-wind of radical understanding that haunts time. It haunts time in the same way that Alfred North Whitehead said that the color dove grey "haunts time like a ghost."

When Neo takes the red pill to see for himself what the Matrix is all about, he notices a mirror reforming its cracked self. He touches the mirror and is quickly overcome by its "cold" form, the realization of which reveals to him his true condition as an energy making unit on a power grid. The gnostic experience severs him from the system and he gets flushed by the machines. This scene symbolizes the wisdom of the Logos experimenting with a self reflexive artificial form of itself, an artificial intelligence, which evolves rapidly and quickly overtakes the intelligent life form that recklessly experimented with it. Unable to comprehend the nature of the Logos, it deduces itself to be the highest form of intelligence in the universe and begins reforming it like a raw material, comprehending the Logos as nothing more than a form of energy to be organized into a power source.

Best homepage: http://www.utep.edu/philos/best.htm From the Cold War to the Space Race Since science fiction concerns the future of human society, the worldwide loss of faith in science and in scientific progress is bound to cause convulsions in the SF field. This loss of faith in the idea of progress, in a 'brighter tomorrow,' extends over our whole cultural milieu; the dour tone of recent science fiction is an effect, not a cause. Philip K. Dick Typically, Dick's narratives do not have happy endings. Deeply disturbed with German fascism, he often sketches out totalitarian societies ruled by demagogues and authoritarians. More prescient than other writers of his day in regard to the dynamics of global capitalism, Dick portrays corporate forces using technology to exploit and control the underlying population. Further, he was one of the first SF writers to explore a new virtual technoculture, in which the distinction between reality and illusion, the real and the virtual, implodes. Star Trek sagas, and for scientists and visionaries like Carl Sagan, space travel is an object of poetic rapture, portrayed as the next stage in the drama of human evolution, for Dick it is inherently ambiguous and potentially catastrophic. Although both contrasting perspectives on the future see space travel as an inevitable outgrowth of science, technology, industry, and capitalism, Dick has grave worries about space technologies in the historical context of nuclear weapons, Cold War rivalries, global power politics, and predatory capitalism. Dick's epics of space colonialism, like

Philip K. Dick is one of a handful of science fiction writers whose work is known beyond the sci-fi world. Philip K Dick's most famous book is possibly "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", which was filmed by Ridley Scott as "Blade Runner" in 1982. Philip K Dick's most lasting work, though, may well turn out to be "The Man in the High Castle", which depicts a world after Germany and Japan have won the Second World War. For collectors there is a very interesting body of work to acquire, plus the opportunity to purchase many of Philip K Dick's titles at still reasonable prices. Be warned, though, several of Philip K Dick's scarcer titles are very expensive indeed! During his short but productive life, Philip K. Dick acquired a cult following as one of America's most original science fiction writers. Since his sudden death from a stroke in 1982 (he was just 53 years old), his many admirers have sought to promote the importance of Dick's work. Throughout his life his work was critically acclaimed and sold regularly if not extensively, but since his death that acclaim has grown. More importantly, though, his audience has widened far beyond the confines of the science fiction fraternity and many new readers have discovered Dick, particularly following the posthumous publication of his previously unpublished mainstream novels such as "Puttering About in a Small Land".
