She has authored thirty four books, including the two that have appeared in 1998, Loba, and the re-issued edition of Memoirs of a Beatnik, a classic of Beat narrative-a witty chronicle of the cultural conditions from which it grew. Will Work For Peace: New Political Poems

Brett Axel visited my Church and I bought a copy of Will Work For Peace from him, not for poetry, but because I care about working for peace. I started reading through it thinking It'd just go on my shelf and that'd be the end of it, but the book grabbed me and kept me rivited. If I had known that poetry was this alive I'd have been into poetry. I've been reading some of the poems to my friends who also didn't think poetry was important and they are saying the same thing. Fantastic! There's n...

MELUS
Fall, 2003 by Roseanne Giannini Quinn
In an article appearing in the Chronicle of Higher Education, authors Ronna C. Johnson and Maria Damon include a photograph of Diane di Prima, circa 1959, taken in Greenwich Village at the Gaslight Cafe. Di Prima, youthful and smiling, with groovy, lace-up, Italian-looking sandals is sitting on top of an upright piano, book in hand, giving what appears to be an engaging reading. She looks, for all the world, like "the epitome of cool" (Knight 5). (1) Long the most familiar of the female writers of the Beat movement, di Prima's publications range from her first book This Kind of Bird Flies Backward (1958) to Memoirs of a Beatnik (1969); Revolutionary Letters (1971); Pieces of a Song (1990); her great long serial poem Loba, expanded and republished by Penguin (1998); and her current tour de force, Recollections of My Life as a Woman: The New York Years (2001). Over the course of forty years, di Prima has certainly gained control of the means by which her work has been published. More importantly, in the evolution of her versatility as a dramatist, theorist, philosopher, teacher, activist, and poet, she has produced as impressive a body of work as any of her male Beat counterparts, including Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Kerouac.

Son premier livre, "This Kind of Bird Flies Backward", paraît en 1957.

Diane di Prima, one of the premiere poets of the Beat Generation, stands out from the male dominated literary coterie boasting icons like Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Ferlinghetti. Raised by first generation Italian-American parents, Di Prima remembers writing at the age of seven, deciding to be a poet at thirteen. In her memoir, Recollections of My Life As a Woman: The New York Years Di Prima discusses her early fascination with the Romantic PoetsKeats, Shelley, Byrontheir "tone of passionate urgency I craved" (77). After leaving Swarthmore College, she moved to New York, becoming part of the avante-garde bohemian crowd, making a living modeling for artists and working in bookstores. Not content to be merely a muse to the men around her, Di Prima devoted time to her own work, even after she became a single mother in 1957. Despite the pressures, both financially and societally, Di Prima followed the birth of her child with the publication of her first volume of poetry This Kind of Bird Flies Backward.

So did you feel like you reached an understanding with your family? In some ways yes, in some ways no. I think I reached an understanding with my mother. She used to come and stay in our house in Marshall on Tomales Bay, and she had a lot of positive things that she saw about my choices. About how the kids were and how they were raised, and she said a lot of positive stuff at that point.
over It seemed like you went through a discovery that you had your own body, studying movement and dance. This book is called Recollections of My Life as a Woman But it seems like there were some doubts that you had about that. For example you had this vision of Keats warning you not to do it, and Kerouac saying...
