An Open Book (W. W. Norton, hardcover, $24.95, 320 pages, ISBN 0393057569). As most of you know, Dirda is a Pulitzer-Prize-winning critic for The Washington Post Born to lower-middle-class, not particularly bookish parents in 1948 in the smallish city of Lorain, Ohio, Dirda quickly fell in love with the printed word. Before you could say "Big Little Books," Dirda was seeking solace and excitement and mind-expansion in the pages of Robert Heinlein, Lord Dunsany, H.P. Lovecraft, and Green Lantern comics, as well in such theoretically beyond-his-age classics as War and Peace and Walden When in his early years at Oberlin Dirda experienced a moment of despair, his father advised him thusly: "‘You know how to work, right? Just work harder than anybody else. If you do that, everything will turn out fine.’"

REFERENCES COLUMNS Fantasy Science Fiction Alas, modesty forbids me to reveal more of the plot than you're going to get in the dust jacket. Modesty and a determination not to spoil a fantastic reading experience. But even in the setup, you can tell that there's something special. Diego Patchen is a resident in the Linear City. He writes Cosmogonic Fiction, wild alternate worlds unlike the one he lives in. In the Linear City, there is a single boulevard, with a single set of buildings on either side of the street. Beyond one side run a set of rails; beyond that is The Wrong Side Of The Tracks; it looks a lot like Hell. Beyond the buildings on the other side of the street runs a river, and beyond that is The Other Shore. It sounds a lot like Heaven. Di Filippo does so much with this premise in the short space he uses, it's almost a crime. If it becomes one, we'll all hope that he becomes a repeat offender. This is some spectacular writing, reminiscent of Mervyn Peake if anything. His prose is wonderful, and he invents a large number of memorable words that readers will aspire to find uses for in ordinary conversation. He plays the science fiction and fantasy cards like an absolute pro, trumping the readers expectations again and again. Some will need a jaw prop to keep from damaging their chins.

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

47. The Edge, Fiction: Paul Di Filippo - Our House
Our House. paul di filippo. paul di filippo has a story in disco 2000. Author of many stories and one published novel, Ciphers, he lives in Rhode Island.
http://www.theedge.abelgratis.co.uk/ourhouse.htm
The Edge Index Our House Paul Di Filippo THE THREE OF US - I, my wife, and the Realtor - stood on the sidewalk, amid broken glass and candy wrappers, crumpled cigarette packages and bottle caps, looking up at our house. Even though my wife and I had never been inside, you see, I already had the habit of referring to the place as ‘our house.’ From the moment I had first seen it, driving past one evening on a new route home from the office, I knew we would one day own it. Its strange proportions and unique charms attracted me as no other structure ever had. It seemed to promise a certain domestic serenity to anyone lucky enough to live in it, a kind of natural ease, as if it could mold itself to its inhabitants, becoming an extension of their bodies, rather than a stiff shell or clumsy carapace, like most houses. Perhaps this was entirely fancy on my part. All I really knew was that the house attracted me. Our house was situated in a rough section of town that was now undergoing the early stages of gentrification. At one time this neighborhood had been several square blocks of Victorian and Edwardian respectability and pomp. (How they had loved their cluttered neatness, their elaborate classifications, the people of that age!) Now, however, the area enjoyed a status barely above that of a ghetto. There were many empty, fire-blackened lots. The houses that had survived were mostly shabby. Youths with bad intentions congregated on corners. Liquor stores did a thriving business. Still, here and there a building stood out, either having been maintained throughout the years of general neglect, or now being renovated.

A Pocket Interview with Paul Di Filippo
by Nick Gevers INTRODUCTION When I first interviewed Paul Di Filippo, for Interzone in 2000, I had the following to say in Introduction: "Paul Di Filippo is an eminent practitioner of bohemian Science Fiction. His numerous stories make themselves comfortably at home in many different milieux, styles, and subgenres. A Di Filippo story can jump effortlessly from Ancient Rome to Alice's Wonderland, from Emily Dickinson's parlour to the infinite grasslands of the afterlife; and the author's language follows suit, shifting from neo-Victorian diction to contemporary slang to hallucinated future argot with a like masterful ease. This literary hyperkineticism allows Di Filippo to inhabit his many settings with sympathetic imagination, but also with the intent of a critical trickster, one who sharply deconstructs, parodies, and satirises his subjects. "Di Filippo's short fiction has appeared in many markets since his debut with 'Rescuing Andy' in 1985, including, very notably

52. Paul Di Filippo, Little Doors
paul di filippo, Little Doors (Four Walls Eight Windows, 2002). The writings of paul di filippo defy easy categorization. Or rather, easy description.
http://www.greenmanreview.com/book/book_difilippo_littledoors.html
Paul Di Filippo, Little Doors (Four Walls Eight Windows, 2002) The writings of Paul Di Filippo defy easy categorization. Or rather, easy description. It's easy to point to Di Filippo's work and say he writes fantasy and science fiction, or if you've woken up on the literary side of the bed this morning, speculative fiction So what makes a Di Filippo story? As near as can be figured (and I've done significant research on this, truly) the best way to identify a Di Filippo story is this: If the piece in question bears little or no resemblance to anything else Di Filippo has ever written, then he probably wrote it. Few, if any, writers can boast the chameleon-like writing prowess of Di Filippo, and the full width and breadth of his skill is on display in Little Doors Little Doors may be a bit much to swallow in one sitting, but doled out over time, it's quite a treat. The title story, "Little Doors," is an odd, somewhat bleak tale following the insensitive exploits of a philandering college professor. His cold treatment of his amours becomes downright cruel as he obsesses over research for his latest academic publication. When things abruptly take a turn toward the surreal, however, it is he who suddenly finds himself on the outside looking in. "Moloch" is easily the most disturbing inclusion here. Suffice it to say that mentally unstable men with a religious fixation should not be fathers. And working in an iron foundry is not the wisest of career choices. Maybe this piece affected me so strongly because I'm the father of two small children. Or maybe because I lived next door to the main character for about five years. Either way, I'm never going to read "Moloch" again. Ever.

Little Doors
by Paul Di Filippo
reviewed by Mike Atherton I've never come across Paul Di Filippo before so I had the happy experience of reading Little Doors cold. I have since learned he is quite a popular sci-fi writer in the states and is noted for his steampunk novels and often mentioned alongside such authors as Philip K Dick and William Gibson. There is little of Gibson in this collection but I can see why the K Dick comparisons are just. Di Filippo takes risks in his writing and not only makes the most absurd situations seem plausible he also injects them with a loving amount of humour. Little Doors is a short story collection (16 stories and one poem to be precise) and as with most collections it has its high and low points. The titular opening story for example is wonderful - the tale of an academic and his unhappy lover who discover how powerful stories can be and how many different doors that can be opened by them. I began reading this on a train journey but the story was pulled from my grasp by my girlfriend who had been reading over my shoulder and was desperate to have it all to herself. Other stories such as 'My Two Best Friends', although well written, seem to be simple gags stretched out over 9 or 10 pages. When Di Filippo gets it right though he really gets it right. 'Moloch' is one of the nastiest stories I've read in a long time and the only one in the collection bereft of humour. 'Billy' manages some quite surreal imagery very well in the tale of a boy who is, quite literally, born without a brain and manages to rise to the highest post in the land thanks to the puppet-mastery of a spider, a rat and a parrot who secretly inhabit his empty cranium. Funny and satirical in equal measure, it was written during the Reagan administration but sadly works perhaps even better today.

56. Lost Pages By Paul Di Filippo
Lost Pages by paul di filippo. Literary trickster paul di filippo opens his latest mischievous offering – a collection of stories
http://lostpages.net/pdflost.html
Lost Pages
by Paul Di Filippo Literary trickster Paul Di Filippo opens his latest mischievous offering – a collection of stories exploring alternate, fictional lives of 20th-century writers – with an “essay” entitled “What Killed Science Fiction?” attributed to one “Dr. Josiah Carberry.” In it, the “scholar” discusses the title’s obscure literary genre and the history of its demise. “Dr. Carberry” boldly goes where no scholar has gone before, asserting: “And the name of SF’s nemesis was Star Trek .” This short-lived mid-60s series (starring Bela Lugosi as alien Officer Strock, Mickey Rooney as Engineer Spotty, and Jayne Mansfield as Communications Lieutenant Impura) was so embarrassingly abysmal that anything vaguely science-fictional could no longer be taken seriously. Sadly, this farce isn’t far from reality.... Two stories share a premise: What if the protagonist had emigrated to the USA? In “The Jackdaw’s Last Case” Franz Kafka is a pseudonymous lovelorn columnist for a romance pulp magazine by day and a gun-toting Shadow-like costumed vigilante by night. Di Filippo colours this story with evocative constructivist imagery, creating a beautiful mood piece in which Kafka ultimately attains salvation from the demons that ate away at him in our world. In “Anne,” the young Ms Frank writes her diaries not while hiding from the Nazis, but in a lush Hollywood setting while playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and suffering through a dysfunctional marriage to Mickey Rooney. The Kafka is a piece of rapturous beauty, while the Anne Frank is simply an entertainment, albeit a delightfully amusing one.

Babylon Sisters and Other Posthumans
by Paul Di Filippo
reviewed by Jayme Lynn Blaschke
This author may be too clever for his own good. It's almost like he pushes too hard to live up to his reputation as a speculative fiction writer who is totally unpredictable. Well, not totally any reader that has encountered his brand of writing knows to expect the unexpected. With that in mind, this collection encompasses both the best and worst of his stylistic quirks. Here is a writer that effortlessly evokes envy one moment, only to prompt curses the next for some literary shenanigan he has perpetrated.
Little Doors
by Paul Di Filippo
reviewed by Martin Lewis
Spanning 15 years from almost the beginning of his career to earlier this year, this is the author's 5th collection. Like all of them, it is thematic even though in this case it is a little hard to say what that theme might be. In the broadest terms, all the stories are fantasies even though some of them contain no fantastic elements. Even though there is not a clear, unifying thread running through the stories it is obvious that they rub up against each other and trade on similar concerns. They are stories of dreams and obsessions.
