He first published poems in the Dadaist magazine Littérature in 1919, and in 1922 he published his first book, Rrose Selavy , a collection of surrealistic aphorisms. While on leave in Morocco from his mandatory two years in the French Army, Desnos befriended poet Andre Breton. Together with writers Louis Aragon and Paul Eluard, Breton and Desnos would form the vanguard of literary surrealism. They practiced a technique known as "automatic writing," and many hailed Desnos as the most accomplished practitioner. Breton, in the Manifesto of Surrealism, 1924, singled out Desnos for particular praise. The technique involved drifting into a trance and then recording the associations and leaps of the subconscious mind. Desnos' poems from this time are playful (often using puns and homonyms), sensual, and serious. He grew up in the old Saint-Martin quarter of Paris, a quarter haunted by memories of alchemists and magicians; Nicolas Flamel and Gerard de Nerval were his heroes, together with Hugo and Rimbaud. For him, Nerval was an "alchemist of the word, possessor of the philosopher's stone of all poetry." Desnos shared Hugo's attraction to the spectacular, the passionate, and the heroic, and Rimbaud's fascination with solitude, colored by the mythology of adventure and the adventuring imagination: "My imagination nourished by catastrophes of the sea, I sailed on beautiful ships toward ravishing countries" ( La Revolution surrealiste , no 6 - 1926 - p. 18). A poor student at the Communal School on the rue des Archives ("talkative, disorganized, disobedient, scatter-brained, negligent, inattentive, deceitful, and lazy") and the Turgot commercial school, he then worked as a drug salesman for a company of wholesale druggists, and translated medical prospectuses for the Darasse Brothers pharmaceutical laboratories from 1917-19. Desnos, Robert (1900-1945), écrivain et poète français. Parisien d'origine, il ne rejoignit les poètes surréalistes et leur revue Littérature qu'au retour de son service militaire. Toutefois, il avait fait paraître, dès 1919, un recueil d'une grande fraîcheur poétique, intitulé Prospectus , qui, caractérisé par la quête du "nouveau", se plaçait déjà sous l'influence d'Apollinaire et du dadaïsme. Dès ses premiers recueils, l'univers du poète était constitué d'un combinat détonnant de mythologie classique et de bandes dessinées. Avec ses amis surréalistes, Desnos se livra sans frein aux procédés de l'écriture automatique et aux récits de rêve ; il se révèla même le plus inspiré des "dormeurs" lors des expériences de "sommeil" hypnotique initiées par Crevel. De cette période expérimentale, le poète tira des contrepèteries, dont la plus fameuse est Rose Sélavy (1922-1923), inspirée par Marcel Duchamp (qu'il considérait comme son initiateur).
